What is the Pekoe Trail?
The Pekoe Trail is a new 300 kilometre hiking trail that was opened in late 2023.
It is composed of 22 stages, starting near Kandy and passing Hatton, Nuwara Eliya, Haputale and Ella.
It has already won awards since it was launch including The British Guild of Travel Writers “Best Wider World Tourism Project”.
What are the nearest stages of the Pekoe Trail to Ella?
The nearest Pekoe Trail stages near to Ella are stages 15 and 16.
Stage 15 is a 9.53 kilometre hike that starts at Makullela and ends in Ella.
The 16th stage is an 8.74 kilometre hike that starts in Ella and ends at Demodara.
These hikes are some of the shorter sections of the Pekoe Trail. Other stages can be up to 18.8 kilometres in distance.

Stage 15 - Makullela to Ella
Stage 15 of the Pekoe Trail starts at a Buddhist temple in Makulella.
Makullella is a small village which overlooks the valley of Ambagaswatte.
The river flowing through this valley reaches Ravana Falls.
This waterfall is one of the most popular waterfalls in the area.
You will start your hike through a forest which hosts, eucalyptus trees, tea bushes with stunning views.
This will lead you through patches of jungle as you climb up towards the top of Ella Rock.
Once you reach the top you will have views of the Ella gap, Little Adam’s Peak, and Ella town.
What will I see on my hike?
The main sights are Ella Rock, Ella Train Station, Ella Gap and Little Adam’s Peak.

Stage 16 - Ella to Demodara
This is one of the shortest and most popular stages of The Pekoe Trail as it is located near to the busy tourist town of Ella.
Starting in Ella, you will walk through tea plantations and some beautiful nature and scenery.
As you walk through the Ella Forest Reserve, you will pass Nine Arches Bridge.
This is likely to be a busy spot as it features in all the tourist guides for Sri Lanka. Lots of other people will be trying to get those instagram photos, perhaps with a train passing over the bridge.
After Nine Arch Bridge you will pass through some small local villages which have stunning views of the Bridge.
What will you see own your hike?
The main highlight is the famous Nine Arches Bridge which is a busy tourist spot.Â
Demodara railway station is also an interesting place to see.Â
You will also see Demodara Tea estate and Newburgh tea factory on your hike.
