Visitors to Sri Lanka love to take a train journey on their holiday and enjoys beautiful scenery on the journey.

Lots of our guests at GlenMyu Estate arrive at Haputale Station from Ella, Nuwara Eliya or Kandy.

Things to see on holiday in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka's most beautiful train journey

Travelling through the Sri Lankan Hill country by train is a special experience.

The journey from Kandy to Ella is reputed to be one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world.

As the journey is around six hours, some tourists shorten the journey and board at Nanuoya Station (Nuwara Eliya) and alight at Haputale or Ella. This reduces the journey to around two hours to Haputale or three to three and a half hours to Ella.

A stunning train bridge that has amazing engineering and history

Nine Arch Bridge is now one of the must see places when you re on holiday in Sri Lanka.

Along with Sigiriya (Lion Rock) it is the poster boy for Sri Lanka tourism. You will see photos of

It's only a train going over a bridge!

Sure, it’s a long way to come to see a train going over a bridge. You can see plenty of trains in Europe and how exciting is it seeing it pass over a bridge?

Well, I’m from the UK and didn’t have any interest in watching a train go over a bridge.

However, we did a trip with my wife’s parents last year and you wont believe it! I was quite excited as the train approached the bridge. There was a big crowd there waiting for the train which adds to the excitement and atmosphere.

I was really surprised about the feeling I had, along with the crowd, as I watched the train go across the bridge.

Pictures and videos were taken.
Some passengers were having from the train getting their own photos.
There was waving and whoops and it was a remarkable experience.

I’m surprised to say that I really enjoyed the experience.

Actually, I was so excited I sent the video that I took to my transporting friend in the UK as soon as I got back to GlenMyu Estate.

He was really thankful for the video and I was so glad that I had been there watching the event.

Now, I’m happy to recommend a day trip to see Nine Arch Bridge (and a train going over it) to our guests at GlenMyu Estate.

My train channel (YouTube)

Several years back I started a train channel in Sri Lanka “All things trains as I travel around Sri Lanka”.

I thought it would be interesting to share the trains I saw in the country with enthusiasts.

You can see my channel in the following link.

A slower start than planned

When I arrived in the country there were plenty of opportunities to record trains as I travelled around the country.

Originally, when we visited the land that became GlenMyu Estate, we travelled the ten hour train journey from Colombo Fort to Haputale station.

Unfortunately, lots of things got in the way for me to see some trains.

The building of GlenMyu Estate and planting around the five acre grounds took my focus for a few years,

Subsequently, the global pandemic and then the financial crisis in Sri Lanka limited my ability to travel the island.

There are also peak seasons where GlenMyu Estate is busy and I am unable to take time off to video some trains.

As the country is getting back to normality I will now  be able to start uploading more videos as I am able to travel more.

Opportunities for Train Spotting in the Sri Lankan Hill country

You can see from my videos that there are opportunities to see and capture trains when staying at GlenMyu Estate.

Haputale station is the nearest railway station to GlenMyu Estate.

Many of my videos are on the way to Bandarawella where the train to Ella crosses.

Ella railway station is only just over one hours drive from GlenMyu Estate and is a great day out for our guests.

Stay at GlenMyu Estate to explore the Sri Lankan Hill Country and see a train or two!
