At GlenMyu Estate, we love this UNESCO World Heritage site so much that we visit several times during the year.
The changing landscape during the year makes it a place where you never get bored of visiting.
We also always feel exhilarated at the end of the hike, whatever level of fitness we have at the time.
A swim in the natural spring-fed swimming pool at GlenMyu Estate is a welcome experience when we return after our hike.
Here are some videos and photos that I took in January 2024 when my best friend and my godson accompanied me on the 11 kilometre hike.
I hope that it becomes an annual event with my friends and family.
A hike around the amazing Horton Plains National Park is one of the more expensive experiences you can do from GlenMyu Estate.
We however think that the cost is worth it given the experience that you have and it helps support the preservation of the National Park. It also provides some much needed employment to local people.
The fees for two foreign adults for entry to Horton Plains National Park were as follows in January 2024:
The total cost of LKR 23,257.8o.
This is around
GBP £57
Euros €66
US$73

Clothing and footwear
Footwear – I would recommend wearing sandals with fastenings. (Thats what I usually wear). Otherwise you can wear training shoes or walking shoes.
Walking shoes or boots are not necessary, but if you have brought them with you, why not use them?
Jacket – a light wind or rain jacket is all you need to bring along with you to Horton Plains. It is a little chilly at the start of the hike as you will start early in the morning.
There could be a little wind or light shower during your walk. I
tend to find that I need my jacket for the first fifteen to twenty minutes and then it goes into my small backpack for the rest of the hike.
Food and Drink – At GlenMyu Estate we send you off with a packed breakfast and you can take this on your hike and eat it at one of the sightseeing points. You will just need snacks and some water for the three hour or so hike.
There is a small shop at the entrance to Horton Plains where you can pick up some items if you need to. The selection is limited though.
Please take all you litter with you and keep the park clean
Sunscreen – Don’t get caught out by the cloud cover! As you are at an elevation of between 2,100–2,300 m (6,900–7,500 ft) the UV level can be quite high. We have had guests return a little too red in colour, despite our warning.
Loo Paper and soap – There are a some toilets on the route however they don’t supply toilet paper or soap. Take some with you so you don’t get caught short!
Camera/Mobile Phone – you will have plenty of photo opportunities for those Instagram and Social Media moments.
A small backpack – you will need something to carry the items listed above

5 reasons to visit Sri Lanka in 2024.
Don’t miss this opportunity to visit a paradise island before too many holidaymakers find it!
You must have read about some tourist spots around the globe restricting visitors.
Some places like the canary Islands have seen protests against the rise in tourism from local residents.
Sri Lanka is encouraging tourism right now and the government has ambitious plans to increase numbers from 1.5 million to 2.3 million in 2024.
By 2030 the target is an ambitious 5 million tourists!
The island is idyllic now, but as the number of tourists increases, the shine will dull in the future as tourist spots get too busy.
We have has so many guests that have left GlenMyu Estate to visit Upper Diyaluma before breakfast and have had an amazing experience.
As we are only 40 minutes from the waterfall, our guests have managed to beat other tourists there and sometimes have had the place all to themselves.
When they return to GlenMu Estate for a late breakfast, they are energised from the unique early morning experience that they have had.
One of the great experiences that you will have as you travel around this paradise island is to take a train journey through a beautiful landscape.
Lost of our guests at GlenMyu Estate arrive at Haputale Station from Kandy and are wowed by what they see on the train journey.
Even in 2023, some guests have found it a challenge in getting train tickets. Can you imagine how difficult it will be as tourist numbers increase?
It would be great if Sri Lankan Railways put on additional service to cope with increasing demand. However, this will be difficult as the tracks are limited on the capacity they can handle.
There are so many beaches around the coast of the island that you would think that there would always be places where you didn’t have to fight for a spot on the sand.
What tends to happen in Sri Lanka is that as a “new beach” is discovered, people flock there and lots of development follows to cash in.
As time passes there will be less places to discover and that ideal image of an uncluttered beach will dissipate.
So, we say ‘come now” before the beaches get too busy.
The east and north coasts of the island are becoming a more popular destination to visit as this part has gradually opened up since the ending of the civil war some 15 years ago.
The best time to visit is between April and September as the coasts are generally monsoon free.
As most of Europe is in the Mediterranean during their summer vacation, there are opportunities to spend time at less crowded beaches.
The Pekoe Trail is a new, 22 stage, 300km walking trail around Sri Lanka.
It only opened in late 2023.
The new experience in Sri Lanka has already won awards and is being recognised.
‘Best Wider World Tourism Project’ at the British Guild of Travel Writers International Tourism Awards (ITA)
National Geographic’s ‘Best of the World’ List for 2024
As more tourist travelling to Sri Lanka become more aware of the Pekoe Trail the number of hikers on the walk will rise.
If you want to hike the Pekoe Trail with less of a crowd, we would recommend that you visit Sri Lanka in 2024 or soon after.
Several of our guest at GlenMyu Estate have already hiked stages 12 and stages 13 of the Pekoe Trail.
Located a short drive from Haputale, GlenMyu Estate is a convenient place to stay within reach of several stages of the Pekoe Trail.

Sri Lanka’s popularity with travellers is surging according to Forbes article in May 2024.
Why are tourists choosing Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka has seen a surge in visitors year on year and it is forecast to continue.
Forbes state that “the country has seen tourism revenue increase by 122% in January 2024”.
They go on to report that “The reasons why aren’t hard to deduce”.
“Sri Lanka is a world-in-one island of palm-fringed beaches, rice paddies and lily ponds, ancient cities, lush rainforests, tea estates and generous, welcoming people”.
Forbes’ article mentions the following places in their itinerary ideas and highlights.
Dambulla – a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the best-preserved cave temples in Asia.
Kandy – Another capital of an ancient kingdom, Kandy is famed for the Temple of the Tooth and it’s Botantical Gardens. A walk around the lake is also a pleasant think to do in Sri Lanka’s central highlands
Head for the Ceylon Tea Hills – Lots of our guests at GlenMyu Estate arrive from Kandy by train. The picturesque scenery you will see on the way is said to make this one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world.
There are lots of opportunities to visit tea estates and walk through tea gardens. A tea factory tour explains how your favourite drink is made.
Galle – This historic Dutch Port is a stunning city with interesting architecture. A walking tour of the city is the best way to get to understand this historic and beautiful place.
Balapitiya – Forbes mention Balapitiya which I’m embarrassed to say that I wasn’t aware of! It’s now on my post of places in Sri Lanka to visit.
They describe Balapitiya as “a peaceful oasis near a traditional coastal fishing village featuring golden soft beaches and the endless Indian Ocean”.
It sounds intriguing. Of course there are a variety of beaches on the South Coast of the Island which all have a different feel to them. So there are plenty of beaches to see and visit.
The Sri Lankan government have ambitious targets for visitor numbers.
We would recommend that you come and visit this wonderful island sooner than later!

Here’s why Australians are finding Sri Lanka again.
At GlenMyu Estate we have seen an increase in Australian visitors staying with his in the Sri Lankan hill country.
They love it here! Their experience as they travel around the country is hitting there right nites.
In 2022 escape.com.au stated “For years, this exotic location was a place that travellers avoided. Now this up-and-coming — and affordable — destination is emerging as a new Aussie favourite”.
They highlight the history and culture, the nature and beaches the island has to offer visitors.
Of course, there is so much more got explore.
You can read their article by clicking on the following link.

Matt and Millie stayed at GlenMyu Estate in November 2023.
Despite the weather not being as kind as we would hope they created wonderful memories of their time in Sri Lanka.
Even we were amazed at the photos that they took at Lipton’s Seat during sunrise.
They enjoyed walking through the spectacular tea estate before visiting Dambetenne Tea Factory.
When they arrived back at GlenMyu Estate they were welcomed by one of our sumptuous breakfasts.
It was such a great experience for them that we now recommend it as one of the great things to do from GlenMyu Estate (if you are willing to get up early!).
Matt and Millie visited Upper Diyaluma Waterfall before they arrived at GlenMyu Estate, so they really made great use of their time in Sri Lanka.
It also meant that they were able to relax at GlenMyu Estate and make full use of the swimming pool and the five acres of land.
They loved the garden tour and the Sri Lankan cooking demonstration.
At GlenMyu Estate we know that Australians are used to a really great food offering.
We aim to provide all our guests a taste of Sri Lanka with dishes that they recognise.
As the ingredients are so fresh we know that we have the basics right. Ru (and her mother and the team at GlenMyu Estate love the feeeback on the meals that are served to our guests).
Our plant based Sri Lankan sharing platter really is a hit with our guests. We offer a free informal Sri Lankan cooking demonstration for the dishes in the sharing platter.
We are always delighted when our guests send us pictures of their efforts recreating the dish at home.
Clearly we would recommend that you read the advise from your countries government advice page. smartraveller.gov.au is the link from the Department of Foreign Affairs website.
Information is regularly updated on there.
Recently Australian were recommended to exercise a high degree of caution during upcoming elections.
We of course hope that the elections will pass by peacefully.
There is a very long list!
Beaches, culture, history, diversity, nature, hiking, surfing and so much more.
You will probably do the normal circular trip around the island to Kandy and the cultural triangle. Then visit the tea estates of the central highlands. Watch a train go over a a bridge near Ella (honesty its worth it). Do a safari and then hang out on the beach or in the water.
On each visit to Sri Lanka you can delve deeper and see more of what this wonderful island has to offer.

A simple Google search for Sri Lanka’s most Instagrammable places will provide you with lots of ideas and inspiration.
The Wandering Unicorns have a list of 27 places around Sri Lanka. There are lots that you will recognise from your guide book such as Sigiriya (Lion Rock), Nine Arch Bridge Ella and Adam’s Peak.
Polkadot passport have a lost of 10 places. These include Unawatuna Beach, The Kandy to Ella Train Ride and Arugam Bay amongst others.

Our guests come back and are in awe of what they have seen. They are amazed by the pictures that they have taken to record their special moments.
GlenMyu Estate has an advantage from the places to stay in the tourist hot spot of Ella. We are nearer to Upper Diyaluma and this means that our guest normally beat the crowds.
In January 2024, my friends and I visited the falls early and were the only people there. We saw our first tourists as we finished our experience.
Many of our clients have had Upper Diyaluma to themselves for at least part of the morning. Leaving earlier means that they have the rest of the day to enjoy the five acre GkenMyu Estate.
Some of the spots at Upper Diyaluma Waterfall are amazing.
Sometimes it’s worth getting up early.
Matt and Millie created a special memorable experience leaving early one morning to catch the sunrise at Lipton’s Seat.
I’m sure that you will agree that it was worth it.

French Tourists in Sri Lanka.
What our French guests say about their stay at GlenMyu Estate when on holiday in Sri Lanka.
Etienne – January 2024

Good News for Tourists to Sri Lanka.
The Minimum Room Rate will end by the 31st May 2024.
Perhaps they will also rethink visa fees!
The change to the minimum room rate is good news for tourists to Sri Lanka and especially to the hotels based in Colombo.
Some hotel operators were happy with the MRR, however many thought that it would deter business coming. They believe that they have lost some MICE business as there are more economic places to hold business meetings and conferences.
You can read more in the Daily Mirror article by clicking on the link.
Recently there has been some controversy about the visa process being outsourced to a company called VFS Global.
There have been many newspaper articles highlighting the issues about the increase in cost to tourists.
The good news is that the single entry visa will be reviewed and hopefully this will make it cheaper for travellers to visit Sri Lanka.
The government wants to advance plans to develop the port of Galle into a tourist spot.
A new passenger terminal is planned and this will enable more tourist vessels to embark and visit the historic Dutch port.
“Travelling should be simple as getting off the plane and getting out,” Fernando told reporters in Colombo yesterday.
Sri Lanka already gives free visas to 67 countries around the globe. Tourism Minister Harin Fernando opined that Sri Lanka should consider doing away with visa altogether for tourists

Dogs in Sri Lanka.
When you visit Sri Lanka on holiday you will see lots of dogs in a poor condition.
Learn how you can help and what we do.
The plight of Sri Lankan dogs was highlighted again when Ben Fogle visited British Vet, Janey Lowes, who lives in Sri Lanka. (Channel 5, Series 18, Episode 11).
Bon Fogle originally met Janey Lowes in 2019 (Channel 5, Series 9, Episode 4).
The update highlights the uncontrollable issues that have added to the pressure on the work WeCare Worldwide does in Sri Lanka. With events such as the global pandemic, the economic crisis and the lack of medicines available during the period increased the challenge caring for the dogs.
We at GlenMyu Estate also were affected by the issues that were beyond our control.
Over the years since we moved to the Sri Lankan hill country we have cared for and re-homed many street dogs.
Historically, after giving the puppies that were dropped off at GlenMyu Estate, a good start in life, vaccinations, nutritious food and medical care, we were able to re-home many puppies.
We have also funded spaying and neutering dogs villagers close to the estate. Many of our neighbours do not have the means to pay for the surgery. The aim was to control the rise in dog population and ensure that the females did not have letters every seasons of their lives.
The effects of the financial crisis in Sri Lanka during 2022 and its recovery since led to us finding it more difficult in er-homing dogs.
People had to think carefully as to whether they could afford to care for a puppy when inflation was so high reaching 60% and incomes had not followed.
There was also a lack of medicines during this period coming into the country. This led to an additional concern as to whether vaccinations would be available to protect the dogs. A major concern was the shortage of rabies vaccines which would create a health risk of the owners and their families.
There are several organisations, in addition to WeCare Worldwide that care for street dogs in Sri Lanka.
Embark has been transforming the lives of street dogs and the communities they live in since 2007.
They do great work for dogs in Sri Lanka by providing medication, spaying and neutering and finding new homes.
Dogs Of Ella is where the stray dogs from the hills of Ella and neighboring towns come to claim their second chance at life.
They have more than 30 rescues currently residing in the Ella shelter
Similar to us at GlenMyu Estate, there are lots of individual around the island that are all doing their bit to help the street dogs.
Many Sri Lankans feed the street dogs in their local area. We had personal experience of this when we lived in Colombo before moving to the Sri Lankan hill country.
A retired doctor drove around the neighbourhood in the mornings and evenings feeding the street dogs in the area.
Feeding the dogs at GlenMyu Estate. Twice a day, 100 kg of rice a month makes several happy dogs.
Some of guests at GlenMyu Estate enjoy helping feed our dogs when they holiday in Sri Lanka.

Internet speed in Sri Lanka.
How good is it?
Is there free WiFi?
Will I be able to work online when I am in Sri Lanka?
We try to answer your questions.
You are on holiday. Surely, you want to leave your life back home behind!
We realise that we are living in the real world, and being connected is very important.
One of the important things on my list when we check guests in at GlenMyu Estate is to provide the WiFi password.
Ben Fogles’ New Lives in the Wild visited the unique off grid clamping experience at Cliff Lodge, Haputale. The programme was aired in February 2024 and both Anke and Naveen won the hearts of viewers.
Being off grid, with no internet or phone connection is an excellent experience where you can really connect with nature.
When we originally planned GlenMyu Estate, which is also near Haputale, some of our friends suggested that we didn’t provide an internet connection.
We provide a different experience from that to an off grid holiday. However, we do find that our guests do connect with nature and are abler to switch off.
WiFi is an important service that we provide to our guests and we leave it up to them on how much they use it.
If you are travelling to Sri Lanka for the first time your family and friends will be happier to know that you are safe and enjoying your holiday.
It’s really important to share your experiences with others when you are on holiday. Perhaps it will inspire your friends and family to do a similar trip.
We love it when our guests share pictures and videos of their stay at GlenMyu Estate.
No one likes taking work calls when they are on holiday, however sometimes it is really important. We have hosted several business owners at GlenMyu Estate and we realise that some information or decisions have to be made by the boss, whatever country they are in
Working love has changed since I left the UK in 2016.
The global pandemic changed the view on working from home and now it is the norm. I would have even loved hybrid working when I was in London. Imagine all those tube journeys that I would not have needed to take!
Here are some videos that will provide some additional information about being a digital nomad in Sri Lanka.
At GlenMyu Estate, many of our guests have had to do some work whilst they have been on holiday.
We provide free WiFi to our guest at GlenMyu Estate. This would be a normal offering when you stay in a hotel in Sri Lanka. Unfortunately you cannot guarantee that you will have a fast enough connection to do what you plan.
We had an unfortunate experience when staying at a hotel in the south of the island recently. The WiFi speed was dire. We also could not connect using our own data on our Sri Lankan SIM as there was no coverage there.
Clearly, some hotels, restaurants, bars and cafes have good internet speed. However, you may have to look for them.
Many of our friends and guests buy a SIM card at the airport when they arrive.
If you are on a vacation for two or three weeks this is a good way to keep connected around the island. You can manage your data package by using free WiFi when you are at your accommodation.
For a longer stay, it is worth buying a local SIM card from a Communication Shop around the island. This will work out a bit cheaper as you will be able to buy a monthly data package.
There are lots of internet providers in Sri Lanka. You will see the vendors at the airport after you collect your bags.
Dialog and SLT Mobitel would be considered the main providers. However, Airtel, Hutch and Lanka Bell are others to consider.
We are looking to improve our offering to our guests and plan to put in a fibre line which will improve internet speed.
I am writing this article after 36 hours of using a WiFi router rather than the fibre line we have at GlenMyu Estate.
The internet connection stopped working yesterday and we send a message to Sri Lanka Telecom to alert them to the problem.
It turned out that a bees nest had been made at the cable line at the main road which had broken the connection. The brave souls from the repair team managed to move the bees on and repair the line.
So, a word of warning. We will do our best to provide a good, fast and secure internet connection for our guests. However, sometimes nature gets in the way!
A stay at GlenMyu Estate as you explore the Sri Lankan Hill Country.
Hopefully, you will not need to work too much!
We only have three bedrooms and you will need to book early during the peak holiday season.
The estate is usually within an hours drive of the major sightseeing locations such as Nine Arch Bridge, Ella Town, Upper Diyaluma Waterfall, Lipton’s Seat, Bambarakanda Waterfall and many more,
GlenMyu Estate is listed on Booking.com and Airbnb.
