Exploring Sri Lanka's Hill Country.

Explore Sri Lanka’s Hill Country – the best places to visit whilst staying at GlenMyu Estate, Haputale, Beragala.

Guests really love staying at GlenMyu Estate and exploring the five acres of land.

A garden tour by Ru is very informative and we are amazed about how many guests love to find out more about where their food come from.

Spending time at our Natural Spring Fed Infinity Swimming Pool, playing badminton on the lawn or board games in the lounge are some of the fun things to do.

A free fish pedicure in the stream and if you are brave an able enough you can go on an adventure to the waterfall at the bottom of the land.

However, there are some wonderful places to explore in Sri Lanka’s Hill Country within an hours drive or so from the estate. Lots of guests like to stay outside the busy tourist town of Ella and have day trips to see Nine Arch Bridge, Ravana Waterfall or climb Little Adam’s Peak or Ella Rock.

We have listed the most popular things that our guests visit when they stay at GlenMyu Estate. They are not in any particular order however there is a reason why we have put Upper Diyaluma Waterfall and Horton Plains National Park at the top. We love visiting these places.

Please do not discard the other items lower on the list. Our guest have raved about seeing the sun rise at Lipton’s Seat. The Pekoe Trail is a new hiking route and there are only a few of our guests who have completed the stages so far.

Horton Plains National Park

A three hour hike in the beautiful scenery of Horton Plains National Park.

Highlights include Lesser Worlds End, Worlds End and Bakers Falls.

A variety of flora, fauna and fantastic views await.

What places can I visit when I am on holiday at GlenMyu Estate, Haputale?

If you are interested in hiking and getting closer to nature, a visit to Horton Plains National Park would well be worthwhile.

On the 11 kilometre hike you will visit Mini Worlds End, Worlds End and the beautiful Bakers Falls Waterfall.

You will also see lots of different flora and fauna on your walk.

Horton Plains National Park.

On your holiday at GlenMyu Estate, Haputale, Sri Lanka you can take a tour to visit Horton Plains National Park.

The park is in the Central Highlands and was designated as a National Park in 1988. It is located at an elevation of 2,100 to 2,300m and is a montane grassland and cloud forest.

It is rich in biodiversity and it hosts several species which are endemic to the region in Sri Lanka.

Where is Horton Plains National Park located?

The park is around 8 kilometres from Ohio and is a popular tourist destination for both foreign tourists and local Sri Lankan holidaymakers.

Horton Plains National Park is located 43 kilometres from Glenmyu Estate and will take you around one and a half hours to get there. We would recommend that you get up early and arrive when the gates open and we can supply you with a takeaway breakfast that you can eat when you arrive at the park.

Horton Plains are the headwaters to three major Sri Lankan rivers including the Mahaweli, Kelani and Walawe.

Along your hike you will see beautiful valleys, forests, wild flowers and a variety of hills and streams.

The plains’ vegetation is grasslands which re interspersed with montane forests and many endemic woody plants.

The park is host to a variety of birds which you will see and hear on your hike. There is also herds of Samba Deer roaming the park and often a large antlered deer can be seen near the entrance.

What's the main Event at Horton Plains National Park?

There are three main tourist attractions at Horton Plains National Park in addition to just enjoying the hike, beautiful scenery along with the flora and fauna.

The most popular attraction is Worlds End which is a sheer precipice with an 870 metre drop.

You will also come across Lesser Worlds End (mini Worlds End) during your hike  at Horton Plains National Park.
This has a drop of 270 metres however also has a spectacular view on a clear day.

Get there early!

As both Worlds End and Mini Worlds End regularly get encompassed in mist which blocks the view we recommend getting there early to have a chance of getting a clear view of the drop. We have not been successful on our trips to have clear views from both so you have been warned!

And Bakers Falls

One of the most beautiful sights, the beautiful Baker’s Falls. The falls were named after Sir Samuel Baker who was a British Explorer and Big Game Hunter.

The falls are a tributary of the Belihul Oya and the falls are a height of 20 metres (66 ft). It is a spectacular sight when the water is flowing well and here is a picture that we took when we did one of our trips there.

Am I fit enough to hike at Horton Plains National Park.!

We have found that the hike around Horton Plains National Park takes around three hours. However we took our time as we are not used to hiking on a regular basis.

There are some strenuous parts of the walk so we would recommend that you take some water with you and rest often. That being said we did one leisurely hike with a friends 74 year old mother! So perhaps we are just not as fit and able as we should be!

The effort is worth it just for the magnificent views and landscapes you experience on the way.
