Elephants of Sri Lanka: A Safari Adventure

Sri Lanka is home to one of Asia’s most remarkable elephant populations.

These gentle giants roam freely across national parks, offering unforgettable safari experiences.

Visitors staying at GlenMyu Boutique Villa often explore Yala, Udawalawe, Minneriya, and Wilpattu.

Each park provides unique encounters with elephants in their natural habitat.

Yala National Park

Yala is famous for its leopard sightings, yet elephants are equally impressive here.

Herds wander through grasslands and forests.

Visitors often see elephants bathing in waterholes or feeding on lush vegetation.

Their presence adds grandeur to every safari.

Udawalawe National Park

Udawalawe is renowned for guaranteed elephant sightings.

Large herds gather near the reservoir, creating spectacular viewing opportunities.

Safaris here often feature close encounters with elephants crossing paths or grazing peacefully.

Other wildlife includes water buffalo, deer, and vibrant birdlife.

Minneriya National Park

Minneriya hosts the world‑famous “Gathering.” During the dry season, hundreds of elephants congregate near the reservoir.

This event is one of the largest wild elephant gatherings globally.

Visitors witness social interactions, playful calves, and majestic adults in one breathtaking scene.

Wilpattu National Park

Wilpattu is Sri Lanka’s largest national park.

Its dense forests and natural lakes provide a unique backdrop for elephant sightings.

Elephants here are often seen near villus, feeding or drinking.

The park’s tranquil atmosphere enhances the safari experience.

Kumana National Park

Kumana is best known for birdlife, yet elephants also roam its landscapes.

Visitors may spot solitary elephants or small groups near water sources.

The park’s quieter environment makes encounters feel more intimate and special.

Safaris near Habarana

Habarana is a gateway to Minneriya and Kaudulla.

Both parks are celebrated for elephant herds.

Kaudulla offers similar gatherings during dry months.

Visitors enjoy watching elephants interact, bathe, and graze in open plains.

Why Elephants Matter in Sri Lanka

Elephants are deeply woven into Sri Lankan culture and history.

They symbolise strength, wisdom, and heritage.

Safaris allow travellers to appreciate these animals while supporting conservation efforts.

Protecting elephants ensures future generations can enjoy their beauty.

Our food offering at GlenMyu Boutique Villa is mainly plant based or vegetarian as we are able to source good quality fresh ingredients.

However, we do offer some fish and chicken dishes for our guests.

Breakfast is quite substantial and guests often skip lunch.

We make our dishes freshly to order from the best ingredients we can find.

Amma shows you how to cook Sri Lankan

We offer a complimentary Sri Lankan cookery demonstration at GlenMyu Boutique Villa when our guests order our Sri Lankan sharing platter.

The platter consists of six or seven vegetarian dishes and is served with rice or flat bread.

It’s a fun and interesting experience. We love it when our guests try making some of the dishes when they get home.

There are five acres at GlenMyu Boutique Villa and we grow various fruits, vegetables, and spices.
