Sri Lanka in May
What is the month of May like in Sri Lanka?
Here are my notes from May 2025.
The weather in Sri Lanka is getting less predictable which we fear is all part of global warming.
However, sometimes these changes are positive as we experience better weather elongating the tourist season.
As Sri Lanka looks to market itself as a year round destination providing you with an idea of what happens during each month will help you make a decision on whether to travel out of season.
An unexpected May in Sri Lanka
At GlenMyu Estate, we were a little surprised by the weather in early May 2025.Â
Normally we would expect regular rains in the Sri Lankan Hill country at this time of the year.
As it is the low tourist period it gives us a chance to do some maintenance around the estate.
The expected rains are when we start planting as the plants have time to establish without the intensity of the sun.
This year, we did have guests in early May and they had fabulous weather.
I had sent links to weather sites when they booked so that they knew what to expect. This year the weather surprised us and was good with on a few short showers during the month.
Another building
Going on holiday and finding out that there is building work going on next to the hotel you are staying is a bit of a nightmare. You don’t go for a restful holiday and expect to be disturbed by building work.
This is why, at GlenMyu Estate, Â we tend to carry out any noisy building work out of season. Â I won’t even cut the grass when we have guests on site as I want them to have a relaxing time and not be disturbed by the whirr of the brush cutter.
As over the last two years, we have had very few guests in May and June, we tend to carry out building work during these quieter months.
We plan to have our new building ready for the next peak tourist season in July 2025.
Not good for the garden, but great for the guests
One of the reasons why the Sri Lankan Hill country is so lush is that it gets regular bouts of rain. Often, this is only for thirty minutes or so.
This provides the opportunity to clear any humidity from the air and to provide the land which much needed watering.
May 2025 in Sri Lanka was therefore great for our guests but not for the garden. Fortunately we have plenty of springs at GlenMyu Estate and we can always water the garden when it is needed.Â
Is going in holiday to Sri Lanka in May a good idea?
Holidaying in the off season is always a risk. However, there are great deals for accommodation in Sri Lanka during May and June.
If you find you are in one part of the island and it is too rainy, you can always find some reasonably priced accommodation elsewhere at short notice.
You can follow the good weather and get a different experience than most travellers to the island that keep to the peak tourist seasons where the weather is historically better.
Experience Sri Lanka without the crowds
Getting a train ticket from Kandy to Ella, climbing the Lion Rock and seeing animals on a safari is more enjoyable without the crowds.Â
There will be more risk of rain but if you don’t want to be in competition with other tourists, the holidaying in Sri Lanka in May, may well be worth the risk.
