Horton Plains National Park December 2023.

Our German guests visited Horton Plains in December when staying with us at GlenMyu Estate.

Here are the costs for their trip, how they got there from GlenMyu Estate.

Horton Plains National Park.

Transport arranged.

GlenMyu Estate is around one and a quarter hours drive from the entrance at Horton Plains National Park.

We arranged a driver to take our guests to the park, wait and then bring them back.

They thought that they may have enough energy to add an additional experience on their way back from their hike.

We suggested a stop at Addisham Bungalow/St Benedict’s Monastery as they pass the entrance on their way back to GlenMyu Estate.
You can read more about Adisham Bungalow in our article “Our day trip to Adisham Bungalow“.

Entrance costs are minimal (around LKR500). It is a gentle experience visiting the manicured gardens and seeing the three rooms open to visitors ay the hall.

You can drive to Horton Plains yourself if you have a hire car.

I have driven to Horton Plains myself.

If you have a more car, you should have no issues getting there yourself.

Travel from Haputale towards Boraland. From Boralanda go to Ohia.

Drive through Ohia (over the railway tracks) and this road will take you through a forest and up to the Horton Plains entrance.

We did send a guest by Tuk Tuk to Horton Plains once before.
Unfortunately the ride was too uncomfortable and it was also too cold in the early morning.
Therefore, we do not recommend going to Horton Plains by Tuk Tuk and paying the extra costs for a confortable, warm vehicle.

They got up early! A six a.m. start,

There are lots of reasons to get up early to visit Horton Plains National Park.

Avoid the crowds.
Beat the clouds coming in and obscuring the view.
Reduce your chance of getting sunburnt. The UV levels are intense at the elevation (1,200–2,300 m (3,900–7,500 ft).

Horton Plains in December 2023 -We prepared a packed breakfast for their hike.

A delicious packed breakfast was prepared for the guests by Ru and the team.

We normally include an omelette in the breakfast as it is easy to eat en route. It’s great to sit at Lesser Word’s End, watch the view and get some sustenance.

On arrival at the entrance to Horton Plains National Park.

You pay the entry fee when you enter the park.

Make sure that you have your passport with you.

Our guests provided us with a copy of their entry ticket to Horton Plains National Park so we could share the price with you.

The breakdown of costs are as follows:

150          – Local Adult (the driver)
16,450      – Foreign Adults (Two people)
300           – JOCOV – I don’t know what this is for!
3,290       – Service Charge
3,028.50   – Value Added Tax

23,218.50     Total

Starting in the walk - Go the harder way

We always recommend our guests to take the left turn at the rock which you meet.

Although this says “Hard way” there are good reasons why we recommend this,

The clouds generally come in to Horton Plains a little later in the day. If you go left you will get to the two main viewing points first. Lessser World’s End is a 270 metre precipice. Greater World’s End is an 870 metre precipice.

If you get there later in the day it is likely that the clouds will obscure the view.

There is no guarantee in seeing the view, but you have more of a chance if you go left.

If you do arrive at Lesser World’s End and the clouds are in, just wait for ten to fifteen minutes and the clouds may lift and reveal the view.

However, if they don’t clear head to Greater World’s End and hopefully the view will be clear. If this is also obscured, again hang about for ten to twenty minutes and wait for the clouds to lift.

Unfortunately, if they don’t lift, you were not meant to see the view thus time and will have to try again on another trip.
