Hiking in Sri Lanka
Hiking in Sri Lanka - I thought that Sri Lanka was all about beaches and coconut trees!
Sri Lanka has a lot to offer for travellers.
There are more opportunities to walk, trek or hike than you would think on this small island.
The variation of hikes caters for all levels from people that want an easy stroll to challenging routes through places like Knuckles Mountain Range.
What hikes can I do when I stay at GlenMyu Estate?
We are close to lots of interesting places to hike and it really depends on your ability and what you want to see.
Here are a few places that are nearby and good for hiking:
Horton Plains National Park (Worlds End, Mini Worlds End, Bakers Falls and probably a Samba Deer!
This is one of our favourite places to hike in Sri Lanka.
Horton Plains National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is an amazing experience.
Looking out over the 270 m and 870 m precipices at Lesser World’s End and Greater World’s End are worth the entry fee alone.
However, sitting and watching the water cascade down Baker’s Falls is a great place to rest during the hike.
The 11 km circular hike takes you past an incredible landscape with interesting flora and fauna at the 2,100 m elevation.
Lipton Seat - Where Tea Baron Sir Thomas Lipton surveyed his tea empire.
This viewpoint looks out across the tea estates that were part of Scotsman, Sir Thomas Lipton’s Tea Empire.
If the clouds have not come in you can see across several provinces of the island.Â
As you walk down towards Dambetenne Tea Factory you may well come across the ladies plucking the tea that will be processed into your favourite beverage.
Diyaluma Waterfall and Upper Diyaluma
Diyaluma Waterfall is the second highest waterfall in Sri Lanka. It is around a 40 minute drive from GlenMyu Estate towards Koslanda.
The waterfalls is spectacular when viewed from the road however, we love going to the top of the falls and enjoying swimming in the pools as you make your way down.
Get there early to avoid the crowds that arrive from Ella.
Bambarakanda Waterfall
Bambarakanda Waterfall – hiking in Sri Lanka.
From the second highest to the tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka.
Bambarakanda is also around a 45 minute drive from GlenMyu Estate.
This waterfall is a height of 263 m (863 ft), it ranks as the 461st highest waterfall in the world.
