Do I need permission to fly a drone in Sri Lanka?

Tourists often ask whether they can fly drones freely in Sri Lanka.

The answer is no.

Permission is required from the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka.

This ensures safety, privacy, and compliance with national regulations.

Flying without authorisation can result in fines or confiscation.

Therefore, it is important to follow the correct process before taking off.

How do I apply for drone permission as a tourist?

The Civil Aviation Authority provides clear guidance for drone operators.

Tourists must complete an application form available on their official website.

Supporting documents, including passport details and travel itinerary, are usually required.
Applicants must outline the purpose of drone use.

Recreational filming is generally permitted, but commercial filming may need extra approval.

Once submitted, the authority reviews the request and issues a permit if conditions are met.
