The best way to travel in Sri Lanka
Best way to travel around Sri Lanka
What is the best way to travel around Sri Lanka?
This tropical island offers a variety of travel options, each with its own charm and practicality.
Some are more costly than others, so you will have to consider what budget you want to spend on travel.
Although the island is small, it does take a long time to travel from one place to another. When planning your trip, use Google directions so you get an idea about the travel times.
Coming from Europe, you will be surprised about how long it takes to get from one place to another. However, travel and adventure is all about the journey!
Here are some options for you to consider.

Go by Train
Sri Lanka’s train journeys are legendary.
The scenic route from Kandy to Ella, which takes you through lush tea plantations and misty hills is a popular way to traverse across past of the island.
Trains are affordable and offer a relaxed way to explore the country.
However, due to the age of the train lines and the landscape that they travel through, often they can be slow and sometimes delayed.
Check prices and book your tickets through the official Sri Lankan Railways site.

Tuk-Tuks -hire or self drive
For short distances or exploring towns, tuk-tuks can be a fun and authentic way to get around.
You can even rent one for a longer trip if you’re feeling adventurous!
Tuktuk rental is an ethical business and lots of tourists are using their services. Several guests at GlenMyu Estate have arrived in their own Tuk-tuk.
Buses
The buses in Sri Lanka connect most parts of the country, including remote areas.
This form of transport is cheap, but buses can be crowded and less comfortable.
You will need to make a decision between comfort and cost, especially for long journeys.
Lots of tourists have concerns about the speed and safety that the buses drive at. After your first trip on a Sri Lankan bus, you may well decide on alternative transport around the island.

Air conditioned coaches
There is a network of air conditioned coaches that travel to different parts of the island.
They are more comfortable than the buses and usually use the highways for at least part of the route.
Several of our guests have used these buses which are cheaper than hiring a car with a driver.
Some guests have used NGC Express to get from Colombo to Ella.
Private Cars with Drivers
Hiring a car with a driver is a convenient and flexible option.
It took me some time to get comfortable driving on Sri Lankan roads. I found it quite scary at first, especially on the narrower road. Although I am now used to driving, I think that hiring a driver is a good option.
You will get to see more of the countryside rather than watching the road.
Local drivers also usually can find you places that are off the beaten path, which you are unlikely to come across under your own steam.
Costs can be shared if you’re traveling with family or friends.
This form of travel is more expensive but saves time and effort.
Mix it up!
A mixture of hiring taxis, using Tuk tuks for small journeys and braving the occasional bus is a good way to see different parts of the island.
Check with the host you are staying with for taxi numbers and tuk tuks.
