Two Lounges where you can relax, chat and enjoy the views

GlenMyu Boutique Villa has two comfortable lounges that have views of the southern hills.

The middle floor have ample seating where you can sit together or separately, if you want some space.

Dining is on the lower floor of the house.

We also have a snug which is an ideal place to have a pre-dinner drink and chat about your day in the Sri Lankan hills.

Three comfortable Bedrooms

We only have three guest bedrooms at GlenMyu Boutique Villa.

The Mahogany and Mango bedrooms are situated on the middle floor and have a communal lounge.

All the beds in the bedrooms look out over the views to the south of the island through floor to ceiling windows.

Our Cinnamon bedroom is on the ground floor of the property and has direct access to the gardens.

The Swimming Pool

Our Natural Spring-Fed Swimming pool at GlenMyu Boutique Villa is located a short walk from the house.

Guests like that fact that it is private and not overlooked by the house.

Surrounded by nature, it is a wonderful place to relax whilst listening to the soundtrack of bird songs.

Food, glorius food!

Our food offering at GlenMyu Boutique Villa is mainly plant based or vegetarian as we are able to source good quality fresh ingredients.

However, we do offer some fish and chicken dishes for our guests.

Breakfast is quite substantial and guests often skip lunch.

We make our dishes freshly to order from the best ingredients we can find.

What we serve to you is important to us and Ru and the team have a good reputation for cuisine with a hint of Sri Lankan flavours.

We offer a complimentary Sri Lankan cookery demonstration at GlenMyu Boutique Villa when our guests order our Sri Lankan sharing platter.

The platter consists of six or seven vegetarian dishes and is served with rice or flat bread.

It’s a fun and interesting experience. We love it when our guests try making some of the dishes when they get home.

The Ancient Majesty of Buduruwagala Rock Carvings

Discover Buduruwagala Rock Carvings

Tucked away in the lush greenery of Sri Lanka’s Uva Province lies one of the island’s most captivating archaeological treasures—Buduruwagala Rock Carvings.

We visited the carvings with the family in June 2025. It was a place that we wanted to visit as many of our guests at GlenMyu Estate had been there and had enjoyed the experience.

Discover Buduruwagala Rock Carvings - A piece of Sri Lankan history

Dating back to the 9th or 10th century, Buduruwagala—meaning “the rock with the Buddha images”.

It features seven colossal figures carved into a towering rock face.

The centerpiece is a 51-foot-tall standing Buddha, the tallest of its kind in Sri Lanka.

It is flanked by six other figures believed to represent Bodhisattvas from the Mahayana Buddhist tradition.

Among them are Avalokiteshvara, the compassionate protector, and his consort Tara, depicted in a graceful, curved posture.

What makes discovering Buduruwagala Rock Carvings especially intriguing is the mystical flame-shaped cavity carved into the rock.

It mysteriously remains moist with an oil-like substance believed to have healing properties.

This makes it not just a visual marvel but a place of spiritual resonance.

A day trip from GlenMyu Estate

The journey from GlenMyu Estate to Buduruwagala is as rewarding as the destination itself.

Winding through tea plantations, forested hills, and quiet villages, the drive offers a glimpse into the tranquil rhythms of rural Sri Lanka.

After exploring the carvings, visitors can unwind by the nearby Buduruwagala Wewa reservoir or enjoy a picnic surrounded by nature.

For local Sri Lankans entry is free.

There is a small entry cost for foreigners visiting the site.

In June 2025 it was US$3 for adults and US$1.5 for children aged 6-12.

It is a minimal amount and well worth the visit.

I tried to do some research online before our visit.
Despite trawling the internet I could find very little information about Buduruwagala Rock Carvings.

Fortunately, we were met by Roshan as we entered the path to the carvings.

He acts as a guide, has good English (and can also speak french) and he provided a good explanation about the carvings, the history and an insight into the different philosophies of Buddhism.

We would always recommend to get a guide which will add colour and provide information about the sites you visit in Sri Lanka.

You benefit from a more informed experience and you also provide employment to local people.

We really enjoyed our day trip to visit Buduruwagala Rock Carvings. It was enlightening, informative and wonderful to see a different landscape in Sri Lanka that is just over an hours drive away.

Getting away from it all

We are so happy to be away from it all.

Since we moved to Sri Lanka and started welcoming guests to our luxury Boutique Villa at GlenMyu Estate, we really appreciate being away from it all.

There have been many local and global events that we haven’t been able to control and felt helpless.

Being off the beaten track, surrounded by nature and without a care in the world, GlenMyu Estate has been a haven for us.

Many of our guests that experience GlenMyu Estate feel the same.

It's good for you being away from it all

Surrounded by five acres of the beautiful Sri Lankan countryside, it is easy to switch off and forget about the world.

Getting some release from the negative things that plague our minds on the news and social media is a welcome relief.

It is good for the mind and the soul. As more people think about their own mental health, getting away from it all becomes almost an essential thing to do.

No TV's and a desire to switch off

We don’t have televisions at Glenmyu Estate.

There are lots of reasons why. We have found that we have benefitted from not having times sucked from us being glued to our favourite shows.

Guests are provided with a WiFi code and we find that they are nit glued to their phones.

There are enough activities going on a GlenMyu Estate to distract you if you wish.

The landscape at GlenMyu Estate is our television.

Sitting on the sofas in the main lounge watching the clouds dance across the sky is entertainment itself.

We find that guests reconnect with nature at GlenMyu Estate.

It’s a perfect place to relax and forget about home.

Good for your body, good for your mind

Walking around the garden, breathing fresh air and getting back in touch with nature is good for you.

When Ru provides our guests a garden tour it is also a time of discovery as you get to see what fruits, spices and vegetables we grow on the estate.

We often have families stay at GlenMyu Estate who discover new things as a family. This is great for holiday memories and strengthening family bonds.

Spending time at the wonderful swimming pool on my own, away from it all are precious moments for me.

Swimming as the sun goes down, listening to the birdlife making their way to their nests is an amazing experience.

It really reminds me of how lucky I am.

I love it when our guests at GlenMyu Estate have similar experiences when they book their stay with us.

Homemade food to nourish your body

We grow fruits, vegetables and spices in the garden. They are the basis for many of the meals that we make for our guests at GlenMyu Estate.

As we do not use any chemicals on the estate all these ingredients are organic. It makes a marked difference to the taste.

We do also support good local producers by buying local and seasonal produce.

Apart from not being able to grow all we need, we believe that it is important to be a good neighbour and support local people.

Animal magic

Being around animals helps take your mind away from home and feel that you are away from it all.

Whether its our ducks, dogs, chickens or cows you will be distracted from the challenges of everyday life.

There is a lot of space for the animals on the five acre estate.

Spending time watching the animals go about their lives is a good way to get away from it all.

Looking Up!

Looking up at GlenMyu Estate and appreciating nature.

This morning I dumped my phone and just sat on black metal chair next to the lawn.

Listening to the birds, I inhaled deeply and connected with the nature around me.

Instead of looking at the grass that I needed to cut on the lawn, I looked up.

The early morning sun was glistening through the trees feeding me with vitamin D.

A kaleidoscope of greens and blues in the canopy above are colours that soothe the mind and I feel connected with nature.

I am joined by two of our rescue dogs at my side seeking a comforting touch.

Animals and wildlife are all part of what makes GlenMyu Estate a special place.

I, of course, had to pick up my phone to take the photos and video to add colour to my scribble.

Don’t worry, it was discarded again in quick time so that I could return to my mornings meditation.

Above and below the clouds

There are many places in the house and around the five acre estate where you can connect with nature.

The view from the lounges and the bedrooms often provide you with the sensation of being above and below the clouds.

Watching the clouds form and pass across the valleys below is more fulfilling than watching a screen, however big or small.

Slow down, connect with nature and replenish your soul

We have many guests that stay at GlenMyu Estate who race around the island to tick as many things of their Sri Lankan bucket list as possible.

When they arrive and settle in, many slow down and use their time here to get grounded and reenergised.

We did a day trip from GlenMyu Estate to Bomburu Ella Waterfall in July 2024.

Where is Bomburu Ella Waterfall?

Bomburu Ella waterfall is located in Nuwara Eliya District, 15 km away from the town of Welimada.

It is the widest waterfall in the country as it consists of several little waterfalls together.

It is the ideal area for a fun picnic with family and friends.

A beautiful agricultural landscape

As you start your ascent there are some beautiful landscapes to enjoy.

The surrounding area is known for growing all types of vegetables and rice.

There are also places to explore as you make your way towards the main Bomburu Ella falls.

What does it cost to visit Bomburu Ella Waterfall?

We visit the falls in August 2024 and the entry costs are as follows:

Recycling efforts

It was good to see that the local council are encouraging recycling. As many travellers to Sri Lanka know, garbage disposal is a problem on the island.

Sri Lanka is slowly getting to grips with the amount of plastic it uses. It has a long way to go, however, initiatives like this should change the landscape in the future.

Unfortunately, we visited after a long holiday weekend and the amount of rubbish we saw in the pools at Bomburu Ella was disappointing. A team was due to clear up the garbage later in the week.

You certainly can get your heart rate moving as you make your way through the forest up to the falls.

I am always careful in these situations as it would be difficult to get back down with a sprained ankle or a worse injury.

Navigating the tree roots as you climb can be tricky.

However, the shade provided by the trees make it a pleasant climb.

A magnificent sight

The effort to get here was all worthwhile.

We didn’t travel in the best of weather, but the sight that greets you does not disappoint.

The water was in good flow creating a natural soundtrack to this beautiful landscape.

Although the long weekend had ended and most locals had returned to work, there were lots that had extended their holiday.

It was great to see so many people enjoying the water and the spectacular views.

I was one of the few foreign visitors to the falls as it is not on the main tourist itinerary of things to see.

A favourite place for local Sri Lankans

Bomburu Ella Waterfall is not a main spot for foreign tourists to visit, however it is a favourite place for local Sri Lankans.

As this is a little off the beaten track it is not on the main tourist route.
However, if you are staying in Nuwara Eliya and want something different to do, we would highly recommend it as an experience.

It’s great if you want a unique experience in Sri Lanka, especially if you can avoid holidays and weekends when it will be less busy.

We made did this day trip from GlenMyu Estate and had a fabulous experience which we will do again at a less busy time.

Day trips from GlenMyu Estate

Bomburu Ella Waterfall is around 1.5 hours drive from GlenMyu Estate.

You can also visit the waterfall when you are staying in Nuwara Eliya. It is only 45 minutes drive from the town (18.5 km).

There are lots of day trips that you can do when you stay at GlenMyu Estate.

Many of our guests do a day trip to Ella to climb Little Adam’s Peak and visit Nine Arch Bridge.

Our guests also love visiting Horton Plains National Park, Lipton’s Seat and Upper Diyaluma Waterfall.

Our 6 reasons why holidays are good for your health.

We find that lots of our guests have the plan to go out and explore the wonders of the Sri Lankan Hill country. However, we have found that several guests charge they plans and spend the day at the five acre estate.

It is important that you plan some downtime as you travel around the island. Many guests have found that GlenMyu Estate is the ideal place to reenergise, relax and give some time for their wellbeing.

However, if you want to explore, hike or walk, there are plenty of opportunities to satisfy these needs.

1.Opportunities to be more active

You are naturally more active.

Completing your 10,000 steps each day on holiday feel so much easier than at home.

One the things that is great to do on holiday is explore and take in the sights. The ‘distraction’ of taking in all of the picturesque scenery takes your mind away from how many steps you have completed.
You will probably end up walking most of the day.

Strolling around the city visiting museums, art exhibitions and seeing historic properties, or just enjoying exploring a new place is a great way to exercise whilst focussing on other things.

Accidental exercise

There are so many places in the Sri Lankan Hill country to get some “accidental exercise”.

You may also find yourself doing activities such as swimming in our natural pool at GlenMyu Estate a few times a day and expending lots of energy.

There are plenty of opportunities of hiking nearby. Lipton’s Sea, Horton Plains National Park and Upper Diyaluma Waterfall are all at a high elevation. You will find that you work your body a little harder than nearer to sea level.

Surely, accidental exercise is the best form of exercise!

2. A chance to recharge your batteries

Going on holiday provides plenty of opportunities to recharge your batteries and get away from it all.

One of the main reasons we love to travel is so we can relax on holiday.

Even just planning the vacation can boost your feeling of happiness. It also gives you something to look forward to.

Being away from your usual day to day pressures can reduce stress levels.

Relaxation helps to drop your blood pressure. This in turn reduces the levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, in your blood.

So, there is no harm in spending as much time by the pool as you like!

Downtime on holiday is also great for giving your mind some respite.

The key element is to spend quality time doing whatever it is that helps you decompress.

Getting a good nights sleep is another thing many of us don’t get enough of.

A holiday usually gives you the opportunity to both sleep and rest.

At GlenMyu Estate we find that our guests manage to get a good nights sleep. The temperate in the Sri Lankan Hill country means that we do not need air conditioning. Many guests are not used to air conditioning and have not slept well as they are disturbed by the sound. They also get dehydrated which also upsets their sleep.

The temperature at night at GlenMyu Estate is within the range that scientists recommend which helps you have a good nights sleep.

3. You can experience something new

Whether you take a city break, or a trip to the country, you will find plenty of new scenery to enjoy.

By travelling abroad you will meeting new people and experience a new culture. You will also meet fellow tourists to share your experience with and get some recommendations on what is great to see and visit.

Adapting to new situations in a country where your language is not their first language can stimulate and engage your mind. This is both helpful for your mental health and also has the benefit providing a sense of creativity and wellbeing.

Many of our guests find that Sri Lanka is a soft entry into Asia. Although you will come across some challenges with communication in some parts, mostly the island is easy to navigate your way around. People in Sri Lanka go out their way to help you and are not necessarily looking to be rewarded financially for their assistance.

4. Get closer to nature and embrace the elements

For many of us, a change in the weather is reason enough to go on holiday!

Lots of travellers visit Sri Lanka during the cold Northern Hemisphere winter. Mid December to early April is the peak tourist season on the island. The weather is good on the south and west coasts. You can top up your tan during at the beaches on there coasts.

There is a good reason to spend time in the sun. Science has revealed that being in the sun (in moderation of course!) gives your body a boost of vitamin D. This can promote strong bones and create a more effective immune system along with boosting energy levels.

It is important to ensure you stay well protected in the sun. Use a high SPF sunscreen and avoid the sun when it is strongest.

5. Time to think and a chance to reset

Spending time away can give you a good chance to reset.

Perhaps you have noticed that you have developed some bad habits over time. It can feel overwhelming trying to rectify them indoor usual setting. But a holiday can provide us with the break and time to reassess your current situation.

Podcasts that I love, enjoy and tolerate.

Life on a paradise island in the Indian ocean. Passing time, learning & amusing myself in Sri Lanka in the Sri Lankan Hills.

When the rest of the world is watching Netflix, my preference it to listen to a podcast.

I was addicted to TV when I was living in the UK. However, I have now eased myself off the screen and I feel that I have a lot more time my hands.

Listening to podcasts as I work around the estate is so much better and healthier than sitting and watching the square screen.

You can subscribe to Netflix in Sri Lanka, and many of my neighbours do. However, after a taste of Netflix in Melbourne, we were put off and look at other options to pass the time.

Of course some of what we listen to is educational, motivational, emotional and sometimes shocking.

Variety is the spice of life and we think that to is important to have a wide range of podcasts which have differing views, so we can make our minds up ourselves.

We are trying to baulk the algorithms so we are not fed the same old same old and things that Big Brother assumes we will like.

Educational podcasts - ones to help me grow.

As I was a Banker in the UK, educational podcasts are swayed towards business topics.

Since living in Sri Lanka, I have become more interested in the environment, growing plants for the garden and

One of my favourite television programmes when I was in the UK was Dragons Den.
Nowadays I only see clips on Facebook of some of the pitches which is enough to keep may interest.

One of the newer dragons, Steven Bartlett, has a podcast called “Diary of a CEO”. It’s really interesting learning business techniques from a range of different people.

One particular thing that I learnt from one of the episodes is that you should also listen to people that you don’t agree with.
I have taken this on board and it gives me an insight of someone else’s view that I may not have ordinarily heard.

When I want to catch up on the news, I make sure that I read a wide range of online newspapers to get writing from different standpoints.

It's not about the money - but it is.

The Rest is Money is hosted by business journalist Steph McGovern and economics guru Robert Peston.
I enjoy the relationship that the two hosts have, which helps listening to a subject, that could easily be a little boring.

Newspaper podcasts

Following the theme of getting different perspectives I regularly listen to the Guardian and the Times podcasts.

The Guardian is historically a more left leaning newspaper whilst the Times is part of Rupert Murdoch’s empire. I enjoy both the Guardian Podcast “Today in Focus” and also the Times Podcast “Stories of our Times”.

A step to the left.

For a proper left wing view from a legendary comedian, I listen to the Alexei Sayle Podcast. This really does show me a view from the other side and it is quite enlightening.

On a completely different theme, I love his BBC Podcast “Strangers on a Train”. I find this such a comforting Podcast, especially when I live so far way from the UK. It is a gentle and interesting podcast where Alexei interviews random passengers on train journeys in the UK. It is one of my favourite podcasts.

A bit of politics

The Rest is Politics with the former Downing Street Director of Communications and Strategy Alastair Campbell and cabinet minister Rory Stewart

I like to keep up to date with both UK and World politics. Having hosts who are from the opposite sides of the spectrum makes it interesting and enjoyable listen.

Food and Drink

Out to Lunch was hosted by food critic Jay Rayner and now is hosted by Ade Edmonson.

Accompanying the host is a famous celebrity and the mix of conversation and discussion about food works well. It’s a good advert for the restaurant and I keep adding them to my wish list.

Sport

I love sport and don’t get to watch much in Sri Lanka due to the time difference to the UK.

Rugby

Rugby was my sport when I was in the UK. I used to play, catch and support my local team. Twickenham was a regular event in the calendar during the six nations.

The BBC Rugby Weekly has a good vibe and the hosts, a broadcaster and ex rugby players are a good mix.

My favourite rugby Podcast however, is Flats and Shanks. I love this because it is more about book and tv recommendations rather than rugby.

Football

My New Football Club is my favourite football podcast. It is hosted by comedian David Earl and Jon Beer who support Exeter City FC. The 49 year old and 22 year old make a good team and have created a funny and interesting podcast.

I listen to the BBC Daily Football Podcast to keep myself up to date with the drama and the theatre of the English Football league.

Radio 5’s 606 phone in podcast is hosted by ex football players Robbie Savage and Chris Sutton. A good combination of (I’d better not says as I will get in trouble!).

Gardening

Roots and All podcast is the only gardening podcast that I regularly listen to. Hosted by horticulturist, Sarah Wilson, there are interviews with guests from all areas of gardening and around the world.

Ones that I dip in and out off

There are lots of Podcasts that I have listened got regularly in the past but have taken a break.

As much as I enjoyed them, sometimes you need a little variety. I do dip back into them from times to time.

Just for Laughs

I’m not a parent but during the pandemic I started listening to Lockdown Parenting Hell with Josh Widdicome and Rob Beckett.

The name has now changed to Parenting Hell and I still love listening to the podcast. They have interesting, funny guests and also give an insight to their own parenting challenges weekly.

Their section Boomer Parenting stories is a must listen.

I also listen to The Wolf and Owl Podcast with Romesh Ranganathan and Tom Davis. It is bizarre, and passes the time making me laugh.

Awkward but funny

I have listened to Geoff Lloyd and Annabel Ports’ podcast “Adrift” from the start. A podcast titled “A comic tragedy for anyone flailing in the sea of their own inadequacy”.

I find that listening to podcasts like this help my empathy levels for others and make me more accepting of the uncomfortable moments in my life.

How do you find the time?

There are some podcasts that are a must listen to and some that I can miss and not feel guilty.

If you scan the amount of podcast that are available to listen to, you would never be able to skim the surface.

It really depends on what I feel like at the time and this determines what I will listen to.

There are lots of opportunities for bird and animal photography around the estate. We can’t guarantee what visitors we will have but you are likely to see a variety of birds and two types of monkeys during your stay.

Where can I stay when I want the peace, tranquility and inspirations to write when on holiday in Sri Lanka?

We have been asked by several guests whether we would offer a discount for a longer term stay at GlenMyu Estate.

The main reason a writer would request a longer stay is to be in a place which is comfortable for that length of time.
It also provides the opportunity to write or pursue their artistic endeavour.

Some guests have been completing or editing their book whilst staying at GlenMyu Estate.

During this stage of the writing process you need to be in a place of tranquility where you can concentrate on your masterpiece. Having the occasional guest of travellers pass through on their exploration of the island provides some relief and conversation from the endeavours of work.

As long as our internet speed is fast enough for you, and you don’t mind the odd dog or two breaking up the monotony of the day, we are happy to accommodate writers and artists.

What does a writer want from a writing retreat?

A writing retreat could be just what you need to start that novel, finish your chapter, book or poetry. Perhaps it’s a time to revise the short story you’ve been meaning to send out.

The main thing is that your writing retreat gives you a focused break from the trivial distractions of life that keep you from deep diving into the big picture of your personal story.

As the average annual temperature in Beragala is 21.3 °C ( 70.4 °F)/maximum temperature of 26.1 °C ( 78.8 °F ) you will not be knocked out by the heat.

Things I am looking forward to in 2024

Things I am looking forward to in 2024.

A year of exploration, meeting new people, learning and getting more balance in my life.

Time to reset and look to the future.

Did you set a New Year’s resolution?

I set my early so that I didn’t have to wait until January the 1st.

However, the beginning of the year is a good time to spend some time thinking and planning what I want from 2024.

Sri Lanka in 2024 - it's going to be a busy year at GlenMyu Estate.

Our to the number of tourists expected to visit Sri Lanka in 2024, we are expecting a busy year. The government’s plans are to substantially increase tourism

We only have three bedrooms at GlenMyu Estate so there is limited capacity.

We can already see that we have a lack of availability in early 2024. This is the main tourist season in Sri Lanka and the number of enquiries reflect this.

Tourist numbers reached 200,000 in December 2023. The curve in visitor arrivals is going upwards.

It’s important for a country that needs foreign income after some difficult years.

It's not about money.

As we expect to be busy it’s important to take some time to reflect on what we achieved in 2023. And what we can improve on in 2024.

But, it’s as important that we look at what we want to achieve personally for ourselves in 2024. It’s not about the money, it’s about our health, wellbeing and achieving a balance in our lives.

We love meeting new people and having visitors, but we will need to take some time our for ourselves. This will mean some time away from the estate.

Our visitors have been to places that we have not been.

Since arriving in Sri Lanka in 2016 and being busy with the construction and development of GlenMyu Estate, we have had little time to enjoy this paradise island ourselves.

So many of our guests arrive in the Sri Lankan Hill country and are able to tell us about places that we haven’t visited ourselves.

Originally, when my then Sri Lankan girlfriend and I started dating we did travel around Sri Lanka on annual trips to visit her family. We started coming during the civil war and there were parts of the country that we were unable to visit.

Since the end of the civil war in May 2009, visiting the North and East of the country has opened up.

Friends from the UK who were visiting Sri Lanka for a wedding that travelled to Jaffna. They loved it there and said that we must explore the region before it gets spoilt.

Exploring Sri Lanka.

One of the things we aim to do in 2024 is to explore Sri Lanka.

We will need some time out for ourselves and will travel during the quieter times of the year.
By visiting more if the island we will be able to pass over our experiences and recommendations to our guests at GlenMyu Estate.

Learning to relax and meditate from our guests.

It’s amazing what each new guests brings to our lives at GlenMyu Estate.

Neither my wife or I were in the hospitality business and we were a little nervous when we started. However, it did not take us long to love hosting new people and learning more about their lives. We love it!

Each new visitor brings a new story and experience to GlenMyu Estate and they add colour to our lives.

I like to do some research on where our guest live, but I learn so much more from our conversations with them. There are places that I have not been, however, I feel that I have a good insight when I meet our guests.

Appreciating the environment and being closer to nature.

One of the main things that we see in our guests demeanour at GlenMyu Estate is how quickly they manage to relax.

The stresses of work and everyday life appear to be lifted in the hill country.

Guests are able to rest and get a good nights sleep.
The temperature at GlenMyu Estate is typically between 22 and 26 degrees Celsius during the day and the humidity levels are not that at the coast.

We often see the sense of relief and relaxation as guests emerge from the vehicle that has brought them here.
The shades of green from the trees and the plants that greet you appear to provide a sense of calm and belonging.

Meditating at the waterfall - or watching the ducks!

One of our first guests at GlenMyu Estate asked me whether I meditated. He was a little surprised that I didn’t.
Living in Sri Lanka and with Buddhism being the dominant philosophy, one may expect that I would meditate.

Our German guest and his wife climbed down to the waterfall here. His wife stayed for a while.

However, he stayed for around three hours meditating, surrounded by nature and with the sound of water in the background.

I am often inspired by guests, and although I have not learnt to meditate, I have found my own substitute.

We have around twenty ducks at the estate. I enjoy passing some times watching them go about their business.
Whether foraging in the undergrowth or bathing in the streams, this is my version of meditation.

Working on me, working on us.

My early New Year’s resolution was to swim every day and improve my level of fitness. It’s going well and it is starting to become a daily habit.

Before we moved to Sri Lanka, my wife and I didn’t spend much time together due to long working days and the amount of foreign travel my wife had to do.

At GlenMyu Estate we are together twenty four hours of the day. We both have our own designated work to do so we do spend a fair time apart, albeit only a distance of fifty to one hundred metres.

Being busy with the bed and breakfast, we do know that we need to spend more time together.

There will be some downtime during the year, despite the expected tourist numbers, and we will be able to spend some time alone.

What to pack for Sri Lanka

What to pack for Sri Lanka

Here is our guide for what to pack for your holiday in Sri Lanka.
Our experience is that it is so easy to overpack and carry around items that you really won’t need.
Firstly you will need to consider which parts of this beautiful Island you will be travelling to.

Sri Lanka has a wide variety of experiences from beaches to hiking and temples to safaris. You can pack lightly if you are just going to the beach, however, other parts of Sri Lanka may surprise you on what clothing you will need.

The elevation will give you a clue and you can research what the weather is like in the area you will be exploring so you have more information on what clothing you will need for the elements.

Beaches, Hiking, Historic Cities, Safaris and Temples

There is such a variety of things to do on this small island. At 65,610 sq km it is similar in size to Ireland. There is so much diversity and it takes longer to get around than you would anticipate.

The Hill Country, Nuwara Eliya, Horton Plains and Ella

It may come as a surprise but there are some spots in Sri Lanka where you will need to wrap up a bit.

Horton Plains Cloud Forest is at an elevation of 2,200 metres.
The weather at times can be windy, wet and hot.

Nuwara Eliya is at an elevation of 6,199 feet (1,889 metres) above sea level. It is called “Little England” for a good reason!

Here are our essential items to take with you to Sri Lanka

Okay, so this is pretty obvious however, it is your key to getting around.

Remember: Keep it safe

Another obvious one however it needs to be on the list.

You can buy a SIM package for your holiday at the airport when you arrive.

Debit/Credit cards

Yes, you will need some money!

There are plenty of ATM’s around the country where you will be able to withdraw some cash.

Some Hotels and B & B’s will accept payment via online Apps such as Revolut, XE, etc. You will need to check with your accommodation.

As with any travel it is wise to keep the amount of cash you have to a minimum for safety sake.

A Reusable water bottle

The best investment you’ll ever make to reduce your plastic waste.

Now more than ever we encourage you to be responsible in reducing your environmental footprint.

You can also help by bringing a tote bag, reusable straw & reusable coffee cup.

Toiletries

Remember:
Soap,
Shampoo (& conditioner), Deodorant,
Makeup,
Sunscreen,
Sanitary products,
Insect repellent,
… and whatever usually you need!

You will be able to buy most of these items in the supermarkets and small shops in Sri Lanka if you forget them. You may not recognise the brand but they will be sufficient for your holiday.

However, Sunscreen can be very expensive and may not be the Sun Factor 50 that you prefer.
Also the Insect Repellants may not be as good as you can buy in Europe.

Sunglasses - essentail for your holiday

Make sure that you protect your eyes from serious UV rays.

As Sri Lanka is near the Equator you can easily be caught out by the strength of the sun and UV.

Pack a Universal adapter

So you can charge up anywhere.

Most good hotels in Sri Lanka will have an adaptor that you can use during your stay. However, it’s best to take one to ensure your phone and other items are charged when you need them.

In recent years Sri Lanka changed to a Three Pin Plug, similar to that in the UK, so if you are coming from Europe or further afield bring an adapter just i n case.

Power Bank - good to pack for Sri Lanka

Keep your devices charged.

This is especially important when you need to spend so time looking at maps & taking photos.

It was not unusual for Sri Lanka to suffer scheduled power cuts during the financial crisis in 2022 and a power bank was essential at that time.

Power cuts are now unusual however if a tree falls and breaks a power line or there is scheduled maintenance then you will be thankful that you broungt your power bank with you.

Camera, memory cards & spare batteries:

If you are planning on taking a lot of photos and videos make sure that you don’t miss that special moment.

Backpack or Suitcase?

Either a Backpack or Suitcase?

It really depends on what your type of holiday you like and the activities that you will be doing.

If you are taking a backpack, make sure that it is reliable & comfortable.

If you are taking a suitcase, then make sure that it is not a burden for you when travelling around Sri Lanka.

Our Ultimate Recommendation of what to take

Don’t take too much!

From our experience it’s too easy to overpack and just take those heavy jeans, trousers and thick jackets around the Island and never use them.

If you are going to some of the sights in a higher elevation then you will need something light to keep you warm in the evening. Something like a shawl or light sweater should do the trick.

Be prepared for rain or showers. A light waterproof (and windproof) jacket should be all that you need.

However, if you are going to tackle a hike in Knuckles you will need some sturdy walking boots, leech socks, jacket, hat and torch.

Please research weather sites before you arrive in Sri Lanka and pack accordingly.

Some extra items and things to consider

A small torch or head torch

A head torch is not the most fashionable item but we find one very useful.

Know when the Monsoons take place

The Southwest Monsoon
The main southwest (“Yala”) monsoon brings rain to the west and southwest coasts.

It affects the hill country from April or May to September and is wettest from April to June.

The Northeast Monsoon

The less severe northeast (“Maha”) monsoon hits the east coast from November to March. It is wettest from November to December.

One of the best places to stay in Sri Lanka 2022 - well that’s just our opinion.

Why do we think we are one of the best places to stay in Sri Lanka in 2022.

Most visitors to Sri Lanka come enjoy the fantastic beaches that surround this beautiful paradise Island which lies off the southern tip of India.

Prior to moving to Sri Lanka in 2016 we visited the Island every year to visit my wife’s family we travelled around the Island and holidayed at some beaches.

I really enjoyed the stunning beach at Negombo when we stayed at Jetwing Beach Hotel in one of my early holidays to the Pearl of the Indian ocean. The beach is an idyllic sandy yellow with palm trees and small fishing boats resting before their next adventure in search of the bounty the ocean offers up.

The east coast has some of the most stunning beaches in the world and during our stay at Maalu Maalu in Pasikuda we walked barefoot on the pristine sand which leads to the inviting warm ocean which is comfortably shallow where you can walk out for quite some way before losing the sea floor.

There is so much to explore on this small island however the building of GlenMyu Estate took our focus from finding out what gems we are yet to discover on the island.

The pandemic has changed our thinking on what type of hotel we want to stay at when we travel around the Island and also when we next get the chance to see the rest of the world.

We now are more reluctant to stay in one of the larger hotels as we want space and some solitary time together. A smaller venue will be our preference in the future.

We have found that from the visitors to GlenMyu Estate so far in our first year that they have really enjoyed having the place to themselves and really submerged themselves in the tranquility of the nature that surrounds us. I can see our guests really switch off and relax.

There are several places of interest near to GlenMyu Estate which we expected our guests to carry out day trips to and return for a delicious meal in the dining room in the early evening.

However, we have found that although there are great intentions to explore the area, most people quickly change their outlook and just stay on the Estate.

The morning is spent listening to the birds starting their day and watching our ducks wander down to the streams and ponds to enjoy their early morning bath.

A wholesome breakfast is followed by a stroll around the pathways around the Estate taking pictures of those Instagram moments.

There are plenty of places to sit and take in the fresh air, the delightful scenery and listen to mother nature getting on with her work.

A refreshing swim in the natural sorting fed swimming pool is followed by drying off sitting on the stone seat looking onto the water.

What gets you up in the morning?

Well, sometimes you need a little bit of inspiration.

Fortunately in the Sri Lankan Hill Country you just never know what you might get.

Is this worth waking up early for? You bet!

When in Sri Lanka, get up early and see the Country at its best.

I know that it’s a tough ask to get up early when you are on holiday, however, I assure you that it is just worth it.

Any photographer, worth his salt, would tell you that the light is the kindest to the camera either in the early morning or as the sun goes down.

It’s just boring when the sun comes up and goes down around the same time everyday

When I was living in the UK I remember having various conversations with friends and them saying that they really like the seasons and wouldn’t want to live in a place where the seasons didn’t change during the year.

I must admit that I would probably have agreed with them for most of my life.

I remember being young and really looking forward to the rugby season from September to May after a long and uneventful Summer.

I wasn’t a cricketer, athlete or sailor so my summers were very long and I looked forward to the grounds getting softer to make hitting the floor a bit more palatable.

A beer or two and an exaggerated story or three in a pub when it is chilly inside and you are being warmed by a pint or four of Guiness is a thing of beauty to a rugby player.

The optimism of Spring, where the weather becomes more pleasant and the evenings get longer, are a thing that was eagerly awaited.

So, seasons were really important for me.

However, as age crept up on me, I longed for a stretched summer and a concentrated winter where Jack Frost would throw his javelins of icicles at me.

As I sit in Sri Lanka and can forgive the sunset at six p.m.

Compromise is what a lot of life is about.

I have given up those long, comforting summer evenings which were full of excitement and optimism for a twelve hour life in shorts and t-shirt all year round.

I feel that I am the victor in this choice.

Every time I get a little melancholy for what I had in the past I bring back the memory of the challenge of getting from Bank Station to my office on a bleak November morning with blast of cold and driving rain accompanying me on my way. I felt abused and uncomfortable at the end of that tumultuous journey and that awakens my senses to appreciate what I have in this Paradise Island.

My wife wakes me up from time to time

My wife is great at sleeping.

I say this and I am just jealous of her.

I had difficulty sleeping when living in the heart of London.

As soon as it got dark in the darker months I would want to go to bed and sleep – it’s just natural for me but at 6 p.m. in the winter it’s a bit of a problem. A disturbed night as sirens from police cars, ambulances and the drunken shouts of a late night reveller would ensure a broken night.

In the warm nights of Summer when it was dark at midnight and light at four a.m. I would have sleep deprivation as when there is light “I am awake!”

Every so often when I do get a good nights sleep I am awaken before my body is ready by my wife saying “look”.

From my slumber my bleary eyes slowly focus on a thing of beauty that nature has delivered to us and I survey the view of the hills below which are bathed in a beautiful light whilst I am reclining in our bed.

I feel guilty if the I am too drowsy to really appreciate what mother nature has put before my eyes and I then make an incredible effort to rouse myself so that I don’t miss this snapshot of our life.

I, however, am comforted that I will be able to enjoy another magical view on another morning when I am more engaged in life.

Wake up early, you won’t regret it.

I urge our guests to leave the blinds in their rooms open and be woken up by the light in the early morning and take their chance to see the potential heartwarming view in the morning. I can’t guarantee a splendid view as mother nature is in charge of the daily event and it is up to her to deliver, our guests have the option of turning over and going back to sleep and getting up when their body tells them it is ready. It appears to me to be a win-win situation.

An Egg Hunt ….but it’s not Easter!!!

An Egg Hunt… but it’s not Easter

It’s been a really steep learning curve being new to raising ducks and only being 18 months in

It started with a ......

A spur of the moment birthday present for my wife in late 2019 brought four ducklings to GlenMyu Estate.

We didn’t know at the time that you cannot work out the sex of the duckling until it grows a bit and therefore we were unsure what mix of a batch we had picked from the retailer.

Waiting, waiting and......

We waited with anticipation and we thought that we were lucky as it turned out we had two males and two females. We thought we would have a stream of eggs coming from these pairs in the coming months.

Little did we realise that there is a rule of thumb ratio of one male to four or five female ducks however we were soon to find this out. From the markings we appeared to have two Muscovy Ducks and two ….well we don’t really know what they are!

The dominant Drake would bully the Muscovy Drake and it was pitiful to watch.

One day the Muscovy Drake decided enough was enough and flew away never to be seen again despite and extensive search by us and our team. We often think about what happened to him. Did he manage to survive or was he lunch for a mongoose or one of the other predators that may be hiding in the forests.

Anguish and agony!

The remaining Muscovy female was a little bit lost for a few days however settled into life with her duck house mates.

The Muscovy female decided one day that she was going to sit on her eggs and our egg production was reduced however, we were intrigued to see what would happen

Amazing Mother Nature.

We are amazed by mother nature and how animals, without any training or knowledge, instinctively mate, deliver and care for their offspring.

Been here....done it!

We had witnessed this with our first dog, Clove, who had been on heat whilst we were in Colombo and we missed the boat on getting her spayed to avoid adding to the already large number of dogs in the community.

Clove was so young but delivered, cleaned and fed her seven puppies to our astonishment and admiration. We were disappointed that she decided after three or four weeks feeding them was too much of a bother and handed the responsibility over to us!

Mama Duck.

Mama Duck, as she is now known, also instinctively did what was required to see seven eggs through to the emergence of seven beautiful, cute, and hungry ducklings.

Mama Duck has turned out to be quite prolific and has delivered several batches of new life since.

The Lonely Duckling.

We have one of her offspring who are now sitting on its own batch of eggs and we are awaiting to see if she are as successful as their mother is. Mama Duck is also sitting on eggs so we are expecting lots of new arrivals in late July or early August.

Both females are sitting on eggs in the security of the greenhouse and duck house. This is a first as Mama Duck usually sets up her next near our Temple Rock which is not secure from predators and we have had many nights of lost sleep concerned about her safety. We are sleeping better now knowing that they are better protected and can be locked in at night.

You have to laugh.

We joke that every morning we have to go on an egg hunt to find where the ducks have laid their eggs so we can collect them. They can lay their eggs in the most awkward of places and are really good at hiding them!

Hide and Seek!

One of the other females is now laying and hiding her eggs in anticipation of sitting on them delivering more life to GlenMyu. She has tried a few spots before settling on one place.

Around six thirty this morning I decided I would go open an egg hunt and watch where she went after her morning dip in the stream.

I kept my distance and had an idea of roughly where she was sitting.

At around midday I had a look at the spot and eventually uncovered five eggs well hidden by leaves, grass and other flora. I took a short video showing what I found.
