Mark's photos with a train on Nine Arch Bridge

In early 2025, Mark and his family stayed at GlenMyu Estate.

They left early to tray to get photos at Nine Arch Bridge with before the crowds arrived.

I was sceptical that they would be successful and expected that they would come back with photos lined with other tourists taking photos.

How wrong was I!

I certainly learnt that day that you should go early to Nine Arch Bridge to get beautiful photos like these.

Our Nine Arch Bridge Photos

We, at GlenMyu Estate, have visited Nine Arch Bridge ourselves.

Here are some of our photos of Nine Arch Bridge.

You will notice that some were taken many years back and the landscape and popularity of the bridge has changed.

Not just photos!

Here is a video that we took of a train passing over Nine Arch Bridge.

There was a great atmosphere at the time created by the throng of people waiting to see the train.

Best time to see a train at Nine Arch Bridge, Ella

I Was Wrong – Best Time to Visit Nine Arches Bridge

I Was Wrong – A Lesson from Nine Arches Bridge

I thought I knew the best time to visit Nine Arches Bridge.

Our guests at GlenMyu Estate proved me wrong.

They left our boutique villa at 6.30 am to avoid the crowds.

Our experience of Nine Arches Bridge

I believed there would still be many people there.

My past visit was around midday, and it was busy.
The bridge was packed with tourists waiting for the train.

There was a buzz and excitement in the air.
Everyone hoped to capture the perfect photo of the train.

Despite the crowds, the experience was still enjoyable.
The atmosphere added something special to the moment.

A Peaceful Morning Surprise

Our guests returned with smiles and stunning photos.
They were thrilled to say I was wrong.

Early morning at Nine Arches Bridge was peaceful.
Very few people were there to watch the train.

They captured beautiful shots without the usual crowds.
The train passed over the bridge in quiet elegance.
Their photos showed a serene and magical scene.

I was happy to be proven wrong.

Even happier that they shared their experience with me.
It’s always a joy to see guests delighted.

Why Early Morning Works Best

Ella is a popular destination in Sri Lanka.
Nine Arches Bridge is one of its highlights.
Most tourists arrive later in the day.
That’s when the bridge becomes crowded and noisy.
Early risers enjoy a more intimate experience.
The light is softer, perfect for photography.
The train crossing feels more special without distractions.
Nature sounds replace the chatter of tourists.
It’s a moment of calm and beauty.

Our New Recommendation for the best time

We now strongly recommend early visits to our guests.
Leave GlenMyu Estate before sunrise for the best results.
Enjoy the cool morning air and quiet roads.
Reach the bridge before the crowds arrive.
Capture the train in peace and tranquillity.
Experience Ella in a whole new way.
Sometimes being wrong leads to better advice.
Thanks to our guests, we’ve learned something valuable.

And now, we pass that wisdom on to you.

What is the best time - Conclusion

If you’re planning a trip to Ella, go early.

Visit Nine Arches Bridge before the crowds appear.
Enjoy a peaceful, photogenic, and unforgettable experience.

And maybe, like me, you’ll be happily proven wrong.

Our guests did a day trip from GlenMyu Estate

Things to do – Diyaluma Waterfall

Things to do when staying at GlenMyu Estate - Diyaluma Waterfall

A visit to see Diyaluma Waterfall is one of our guests favourite things to do and see whilst they stay at GlenMyu Estate.

There are lots of other great experiences that you can enjoy when staying at GlenMyu Estate.

Whether you want to hike the Pekoe Trail, walk through Tea gardens at Lipton’s Seat, swim in pool at amazing waterfalls or visit the sights around the busy tourist town of Ella you will have plenty to choose from.

Staying at GlenMyu Estate is an experience itself.
Ru is always happy to show you around the gardens so you can see what vegetables, fruits and spices we grow.

Our Sri Lankan cookery demonstration, with Ru and her mother is also another entertaining and informative experience for you to participate in on the estate.

Diyaluma Waterfall

Diyaluma Falls is 220 m (720 ft) high and the second highest waterfall in Sri Lanka.

The falls are formed by Punagala Oya, a tributary of Kuda Oya which in turn, is a tributary of Kirindi Oya.

In the Sinhalese language, Diyaluma or Diya Haluma means “rapid flow of water” or may be translated as “liquid light”.

Upper Diyaluma Pools

Upper Diyaluma Pools are an amazing experience.

The cool clear water surrounded by rocks and plant life makes you feel connected with nature.

We love wading through these pools after the short hike to the top.

There are other pools to swim in on the lower levels.

We would recommend that you are cautious as the edges can be slippery and a little dangerous.

Where is Diyaluma Waterfall and Upper Diyaluma Pools

Getting to Diyaluma Waterfall and Upper Diyaluma Pools

If you are coming to GlenMyu Estate from the south of the country you will most likely pass Diyaluma Waterfall when you travel from Wellawaya on the A4 road.

There is a small road which takes you to some small shops and the path to Upper Diyaluma Pools.

Sri Lanka in August

Sri Lanka in August

August is a great month to visit Sri Lanka.

This is our driest month in the Sri Lankan Hill Country at GlenMyu Estate.

Unlike other months you are unlikely to see any rain which could spoil some of the sightseeing when you are on holiday.

What is the month of August like in Sri Lanka?

Clearly, the weather around the globe is less predictable. Heatwaves in the UK, flooding in Spain and too many wildfires in the US and Australia makes planning your holiday less certain.

Sri Lanka is  affected by Monsoons, however, in the hill country, typically we get little or no rain.

It makes it a safer place to visit when you want to avoid adverse weather.

The Weather in August in Sri Lanka

At GlenMyu Estate, near Beragala, Sri Lanka we find that August is a dry month. Fortunately, we have springs on the five acre estate, and to date have always had water throughout the year.

It’s great to spend time at the natural spring-fed swimming pool after a days exploring the sights nearby.

I have some links to weather sites so you can seed for yourself what you should expect.

Not good for the garden, but great for the guests

One of the reasons why the Sri Lankan Hill country is so lush is that it gets regular bouts of rain.

However, with little or no rain in August, we get the sprinklers on to keep the lawns in good shape.

Here is Patch enjoying the shoe looking at the swimming pool in the  distance.

Is going in holiday to Sri Lanka in August a good idea?

August is a high tourist season in Sri Lanka due to the weather and the natural holiday period in the west.

We have found that many more Australians, New Zealanders and South Africans are visiting Sri Lanka in August.

If you are looking to avoid the Southern Hemisphere winter, then visiting Sri Lanka in August is a good choice.

Arugam Bay is great for surfing at this time of year. The East coast beaches are also open and visiting this less developed part of the island is great if you want to avoid the crowds.

Yes, it's great to holiday in Sri Lanka in August

As Sri Lanka is still developing its’ tourism offering the local people welcome tourists.

Unlike some established tourist spots in Europe, you won’t be squirted with a water pistol!

The East and North Coasts of the island were not available to visit during the countries civil war which ended over fifteen years ago.

If you are looking to explore a place which has not been overdeveloped then Sri Lanka is a great place to holiday in August.

A selfie at Nine Arch Bridge, Demodara, Ella, Sri Lanka

Is Ella worth visiting?

Is Ella worth visiting?

Is Ella worth visiting?

Some travellers in are reading that Ella is too crowded and a tourist trap.

This backpacker town has grown over the last fifteen years into one of the must visit places on the island.

Here is why our guests at GlenMyu Estate like visiting Ella on a day trip.

A street in Sri Lanka like no other

We always think that Ella’s main street is nothing like the rest of Sri Lanka. It reminds us of more of a European street with cafes and bars. It’s great for people spotting and having a chilled out meal and drinks.

However, if you are looking for more of an authentic Sri Lankan experience, you may be disappointed.

Is Ella worth visiting? Nine Arch Bridge, Ella

Nine Arch Bridge is one of the most popular places to visit near Ella.

The bridge is a beautiful landmark located just outside Ella Town.

Along with the Lion Rock in Sigiriya, it is now probably one of the most famous landmarks in the country.

Although Nine Arch Bridge is a busy tourist spot, we enjoyed seeing the crowds wait in anticipation for the train.

There was a good atmosphere and excitement as the train arrived.

Some people think it is a bit too touristy and it’s just a bridge.

However, if you research the history of the bridge you will read that it is an important feat of engineering.

Is Nine Arch Bridge, Ella worth visiting?

Despite it being touristy, we think that it’s important to see the bridge whilst you are in Sri Lanka for a talking point when you get home at least!

Is Ella worth visiting? Ravana Waterfall, Ella

Ravana Waterfall is on the outskirts of Ella and is one of the widest waterfalls in the country.

The falls were named after the legendary character Ravana (related to the famous Indian epic poem, the Ramayana).

In the legend, Ravana (king of Sri Lanka at the time) had kidnapped Indian princess Sita. He hid her in the caves behind this waterfall, now simply known as the Ravana Ella Cave.

You can read more about the story of Ravana Waterfall in this link about Ramayana.

A day trip to Ella from GlenMyu Estate

Here is what our guests typically do on their day trip to Ella.

Hike the short trek to see the view at Little Adam’s Peak
See a train pass over the beautiful Nine Arch Bridge
Get some refreshments in the cool bars of restaurants in Ella High Street
Travel to Ravana Waterfall and wade through the cool water.

There are lots of other options including:

Climbing Ella Rock
Taking Ravana Zip Wire
Visiting Ravana Cave

Is Ella worth visiting?

If you want to climb Ella Rock and do lots of the things in and around the area, we would recommend that you stay in Ella itself.

If you don’t want to stay in a touristy and crowded place that does not reflect Sri Lanka, then there are lots of places, including GlenMyu Estate, where you can stay and just visit for the day.

Overall, if you have time, we think that it is worth spending a day there and selecting three items to do and see.

Things to see on holiday in Sri Lanka.

Why Europeans like Sri Lanka

Why Europeans like holidaying in Sri Lanka

Why Europeans like Sri Lanka

Many of our European guests at GlenMyu Estate like to escape the winter blues and spend time on the paradise island of Sri Lanka.

Here are some of the reasons why they love exploring this amazing island.

It's not all about the beach

Sri Lanka offers so much more than just beaches.

The beaches are great and there is a wide variety of experiences around the coastline.

However, this small island offers culture, history, food, hiking, safaris, water sports, birdwatching, amazing hospitality and so much more.

The Sri Lankan Tourist boards slogan “You’ll be back for more” is apt and you will get an understanding on your first holiday on the island.

Why do Europeans like Sri Lanka - South and West Coast beaches

On you holiday in Sri Lanka you will no doubt want to spend some time at the beach like many other European visitors.

The beaches on the South and West Coasts are best during the Northern Hemisphere winter.

You will find that each beach has a different vibe.

Whether you favour sun worshipping, activities such as snorkelling, scuba diving, or surfing there are lots of options for you.

At GlenMyu Estate we find that most of our guests visit the following beaches:

Hiriketiya beach

Europeans like Hiriketiya beach because it offers surfing, great food and a good atmosphere.

The horseshoe-shaped bay known as Hiriketiya Beach is one of the best surfing spots on the south coast of Sri Lanka. Be warned, it has become very popular over the last few years.

Mirissa Beach

Stunning Mirissa Beach boasts powdery pale sand, while its azure water is framed by coconut palm trees.

There are lots of delightful cafes and restaurants along the shore. It’s great for grabbing a fresh seafood meal.

Whether you want to sunbathe, surf, or go on a whale-watching tour, Mirissa beach offers a lot of variety for European travellers.

Unawatuna Beach

Unawatuna Beach in Unawatuna on the south coast of Sri Lanka

It’s a popular destination and particularly known for its calm, turquoise waters, golden sands, and lush palm trees.

This beach is a great spot for swimming, sunbathing, and relaxing, especially for families with children

Why Europeans like Sri Lanka - sun and sand in the European winter

There are many more beaches to discover on the South and West coasts.

More European travellers are ditching the Med in favour of Sri Lanka during the summer months.

The East and North coasts have opened since the end of the Civil War in 2009 and tourism is slowly developing there.

Pasikudah beach looks like something you would expect to see in the Caribbean. The shelf is shallow so it’s safe to swim for children, especially during the summer when it is monsoon free.

Hotels along the beautiful stretch of beach in Pasikuda  offer luxury whilst you soak up the sun.

Venture further North to the less developed beaches such as Marble Beach, China Bay and Nilaveli.

If you can only stay so long on a beach!

My wife and I are not really beach people.

We can handle a few days, but…..,then we need to do something different.

The good news is that Sri Lanka has so many other experiences to offer.

We find that many of our European guests want to have variation on their holiday. After getting some colour into their skin, they are ready for a different type of experience.

GlenMyu Estate is located in the Sri Lankan Hill country and there are lots of different things to do.

As GlenMyu Estate is located close enough to Ella to allow our guests to enjoy all that the busy tourist town has to offer.

We are in reach of two amazing waterfalls, several stages of the new Pekoe Trail and also the unique landscape of Horton Plains National Park.

Hiking in the Central Hill Country

If getting some exercise whilst enjoying and amazing environment, Sri Lanka has lots of hiking options for you.

The Award winning Pekoe Trail challenges you to a 300 kilometre hike. There are 26 stages and therefore you can select which ones you would like to do. However, there is a growing number of hikers that have completed the whole trail since it opened in 2023.

Our European guests that stay with us at GlenMyu Estate love hiking Horton Plains National Park. The hike includes a unique landscape, World’s End and Baker’s Falls along with an array of interesting flora and fauna.

History and Culture

Sri Lanka has a long history and interesting culture.

Sri Lanka Culture is one of the few countries with a very vast and rich cultural diversity. The culture is itself very unique and thereby contributes to the Sri Lankan identity. Sri Lankan culture includes a lot of customs and rituals, whish date to more than 2000 years which were handed down from generation to generation.

Europeans have had their influence on Sri Lanka as it was a Portuguese, Dutch and British colony over its’ history.

The best of Sri Lanka’s culture includes traditional Kandyan dance, vibrant festivals like Vesak, exquisite handicrafts, and ancient Buddhist temples. Its diverse heritage blends influences from Sinhalese, Tamil, and colonial histories, creating a unique cultural tapestry.

The Cultural Triangle

Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle is a treasure trove of ancient cities, sacred temples, and remarkable ruins.

This area, located in the heart of the island, encompasses the historic cities of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, and Kandy, forming a triangle that showcases the rich cultural and religious heritage of Sri Lanka.

Europeans like Sri Lanka - Sigiriya - the Lion Rock

This UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sigiriya Rock Fortress (also known as Lion Rock) was a private fortress with a history dating back to 495 A.D

Travellers are wowed by the views from the top of the rock. Some also climb Pidurangala to see this impressive natural structure from a different perspective.

It is worth reading about the history of the once Royal Palace before you go so you can appreciate this marvel.

Things to see on holiday in Sri Lanka.

Ella and Nine Arch Bridge

It would be remiss of me not mentioning Ella and Nine Arch Bridge.

The bridge is an iconic emblem of the more recent tourist industry in Sri Lanka.

There are lots of wonderful sights to experience and visit from Ella. These include Ravana Waterfall, Little Adam’s Peak hike, Ella Rock, and the hip high street amongst others.

Europeans particularly like Ella in Sri Lanka as it is a comfortable reminder of home. The food and drinks offered are particularly European. If you want a change from Sri Lankan rice and curry, Ella offers pizza, burgers and chips!

Best hotels in Sri Lanka for three couples

Best hotels in Sri Lanka for three couples

Where are the best hotels in Sri Lanka for three couples.

Do you want to have the place all to yourselves?

Then GlenMyu Estate, in the Sri Lankan Hill Country, may be the ideal place for you.

Smaller is better

Since the global pandemic we have seen a move towards travellers choosing smaller hotels and villas.

They don’t want to be in a larger hotel, queuing at a buffet for their breakfast.

A smaller, bespoke hotel provides the privacy and level of service that some of the larger hotels cannot match.

If you and your friends are planning a holiday in Sri Lanka, then there are lots of great options for you to consider.

Eat a healthy breakfast

Near, but far enough away from Ella

At GlenMyu Estate, we have hosted guests that want to be in reach of the tourist hot spots, but don’t want to be in the heart of a touristy place.

Many guest choose GlenMyu Estate,

Exclusive use

We really like it when we have one group of guests taking all three bedrooms.

The exclusive use of the property with your friends or family mean that you can truly relax.

We can offer better direct booking rates when you book all three bedrooms for two nights or more.

Space for three couples to enjoy time on their own

An important thing to us is that you can have some time alone if required.

We have made sure that each bedroom has two comfortable places to sit, if you want time away for yourselves. There is a mix of chairs or beanbags for you to relax.

There are two lounges which also have comfortable seating. They are configured so you can sit together or spend some time in individual spaces.

Three luxury bedrooms for three couples

The Mango, Mahogany and Cinnamon bedrooms all have private bathrooms.

Each king-size bed faces out to the stunning views of the valley below leading towards the south coast.

As the temperature does not get too warm in the Sri Lankan Hill country, we do not have air conditioning. Overhead fans are all that is needed for those warmer times of the year.

Finding a hidden gem in Sri Lanka.

Finding a Hidden Gem

Finding a hidden gem in Sri Lanka.

Discovering a place to stay that you fall in love with before others do is a great feeling.

However, once it’s on the tourist radar, you may find it difficult to get a room!

As more tourists visit Sri Lanka there are less chances that you will find a hidden gem.

Of course, as more people discover the hidden gem, the cat will be out of the bag and everyone will know about it.

The trick is to get there early before others do.

Sri Lanka is becoming a more popular tourist destination

Sri Lanka has seen its’ tourist numbers increase substantially over the last year.

In December 2023, January 2024 and February 2024, tourist numbers when compared against the previous period.

It still has a long way to go before it competes with Bali, Cambodia or Thailand.

The tourist board have ambitious targets for the coming year, so get there before it becomes too busy.

A hidden gem in the Sri Lankan hill country

GlenMyu Estate has only been operating since the start of 2022.

Guests love it and there are already we have had several returning guests.

A view from the lawn of the the house at GlenMyu Estate, Hotel and Bed & Breakfast, Haputale, Sri Lanka.
A family gathering at the balcony.

What's so special?

A comfortable place to stay, space and amazing food are there things that our guests comment upon.

As we only have three guest bedrooms at the five acre estate, you are not fighting with other guests for space.

There are no need for time slots to enjoy the natural spring fed infinity swimming pool.

We don’t have staff bothering you too often looking to upsell.

What my wife and I have found is that we can assess the level of interaction our guests want shortly after your arrival.

There is so much more, but you really have to stay to find out what you like best.

Feedback from our guests is important

We have been humbled by what our guests say about their stay with us at GlenMyu Estate.

Neither my wife or I are extroverts and we are really overwhelmed and amazed by our guests taking the time to write the words about their time with us.

It won't last for long!

Some of our guests tell us that they want to keep GlenMyu Estate undiscovered so that there will always be a room for them when they come back!

We have no plans to expand from the three bedrooms that we have and therefore we do believe that in time it will be more difficult to get a room at the estate.

Although we have not been trading very long, we already have had several returning guests and recommendations to their friends and family.

Haputale Railway Station

A 7 hour train journey in Sri Lanka

A 7 hour train journey in Sri Lanka

Kandy to Ella is a 7 hour train journey in Sri Lanka.

Is, what is considered as one of the most beautiful train rides in the world worth it?

I would be horrified contemplating a seven hour train journey in the UK or Europe.

So why do so many tourist have this train journey from Kandy to Ella on their bucket list?

This journey is known as one of the most beautiful train rides in the world due to the spectacular scenery that you will see on the way. The landscape changes as you leave Kandy as the train makes it way through the Sri Lankan Hill country.

One of the highlights of the train journey is getting to Ella to see Nine Arch Bridge.

This bridge is beautiful and iconic. Crowds arrive in time to see a train cross the bridge to take their photos and selfies to post on social media sites such as Instagram

The bridge is just over one hundred years old (opened in 1921).

It is an amazing feat of engineering as it is made of stone, rocks and cement. The steel that was going to be used for the bridge was redirected for use for the Great War in Europe.

There are many train stations on this seven hour train journey, all which have their own character.

Some of the trains stop for a while at the station. We managed to jump off and buy a cup of tea at the station cafe!

The newest train ‘Ella Odyssey” stops for a time at many of the staions so that you can get off and take some photos. This does add some time to the already very long train journey.

Experiences on a seven hour train journey.

In both these videos they get on the train in Perideniya to attempt to get a seat.

You can reserve seats, however as the train ride is so popular, train tickets are sold out fast.

These travellers bought unreserved tickets and took a chance on whether they would get a seat

Sit on the right if travelling to Ella if you can

It is commonly suggested that it is best to sit on the right hand side of the train for the best views if you a travelling from Kandy to Ella.

However, you will still get good views on the left hand side for part of the train journey if you are not able to bag that seat.

An authentic experience or guaranteed comfort

First, Second and Third Class?

Choosing what class you should pick depends on what type of experience you want.

The First Class compartments have air conditioning and the windows cannot be opened.

According to most people you don’t get an authentic experience travelling in First Class.

In Second and Third Classes you will be able to mov e around and perhaps sit at the doorway during your journey.

Please be careful though as some people do fall off and end up in hospital trying to get a selfie!

I guess the class that you choose is all about whether you want comfort for a seven hour train journey or you want to move around and perhaps stand for some of the journey.

5 Must see places in Sri Lanka

5 Must see places in Sri Lanka

Where are the must see places in Sri Lanka?

There are so many places and experiences to choose from, the list could be very long.

However, most travellers have too short a time on this paradise island to see enough.

This is why many visitors to Sri Lanka come back again and again.
The Sri Lanka Tourist boards slogan is ‘You will come back for more’.

Our 5 best must see places?

We have listed five places that we think that you must see on your first trip to Sri Lanka.

Some are prominent in guide books and we considered that we had to put on the list.

We could have put five places that you must visit whilst staying at GlenMyu Estate as there are so many amazing places within an hours drive away.

However, we understand that your time on holiday is short and we have highlighted five places you must see around the island.

1. Nine Arch Bridge, Demodara

This bridge near Ella Town has probably taken over the Lion Rock, Sigiriya as the number one place to visit on the island.

But its’s just a bridge!, I hear you say.

Nine Arch Bridge is in a stunning setting and is part of what has been coined the most beautiful train journey in the world.

The bridge is just over one hundred years old (Opened 1921).
Apparently it is just made from stone, rocks and cement as the steel that was to be used in its’ construction was redirected to be used in the First World War effort.

I guess is Scotland can have the Harry Potter Bridge at Glenfinnan Viaduct, Sri Lanka can have a stunning bridge too!

2 Lion Rock, Sigiriya

This UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sigiriya Rock Fortress, is known as Lion Rock.

Prior to being built as a fortress, it’s thought the rock was a Buddhist monastery.

The citadel on top of Sigiriya Lion Rock was built by King Kasyapa who ruled from 477 to 495 AD. As he was worried of potential attacks from his brother Moggallana, the rightful heir to the throne, he used the fortress as his royal residence.

The Lion Rock was once again used as a monastery after Kasyapa’s death until it was abandoned in the 14th century.

You will ascend 200 metres climbing 1,200 steps and will be met with a magnificent view.

We would recommend that you go early to avoid the heat of the sun.

Remember, you can always see the Lion Rock from Pidurangula Rock which is likely to have less tourists.

3. Horton Plains National Park, World's End

Our guests that stay with us at GlenMyu Estate love hiking at UNESCO World Heritage site, Horton Plains National Park.

The exhilarating views that you will see from Greater World’s End and Little World’s End are worth the 11 kilometre circular trek itself.

At an elevation of around 2,100 metres you will feel that you have had a good workout at the end of your walk.

Information boards highlight the landscape, flora and fauna that you are likely to see on your hike.

You will enjoy sitting watching the cool water cascading down the beautiful Baker’s Falls waterfall.

Make sure you go early to get a chance of a clearer view at both Worlds End viewpoints.

4. The Southern Beaches

There is so much variety for you to experience at the southern beaches of Sri Lanka.

Apart from catching the rays to show off when you get home, there are lots of different things to do.

Visit one of the turtle hatcheries.

Learn to surf at a surf camp

Enjoy the nightlife at one of the

Watch the sunset with your partner

Don’t forget, if you are visiting the island during May to August, you should stick to the beaches of the East and North coasts.

Goyambokka Beach (Sriyanga Sanjeewa)
Mihiripenna Beach

5.Yala National Park

Yala National Park is probably the best known park on the island to do a safari and see animals. It is the most visited and second largest national park in Sri Lanka.

The park covers a total area of 1268 sq km of scrub, light forest, grassy plains and brackish lagoons.

You are likely to see a wide range of wildlife such as leopards, elephants, sloth bears, sambars, jackals, spotted dear, peacocks and many more types of birds.

However, there are plenty of other safari parks around the country. So, if you want to avoid the crowds look for other parks as you travel around the island.

Developing an interest in Birdwatching

Developing an interest in birdwatching in Sri Lanka.

It’s easy to develop an interest in bird watching in Sri Lanka. The birds appear to be more interesting on this paradise island.

Whether it is the colours of their feathers or just the light that they fly in, it has heightened my interest.

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.

It’s easy to develop an interest in birdwatching in Sri Lanka.

There are many endemic species, residents and migrants to spark your curiosity.

According to Nature Odyssey, currently there are 33 identified species of endemic birds in Sri Lanka, out of which most are found in the wet zone

A colourful world

I didn’t really have much of an interest in birdwatching when I lived the UK.

Since living in Sri Lanka my curiosity about all forms of nature has increased. Perhaps it’s just living in a place that is surrounded by nature.

Maybe it’s because the birds appears to have so much more colour than those in the UK.

Birdwatching Holiday in Sri Lanka

A little help from our neighbours to bring about an interest in birdwatching

At GlenMyu Estate we are really fortunate that some of our neighbours have a lifetime interest in birdwatching.

They have helped develop our interest in birding and we have often had informal early birdwatching session with our neighbours on the estate.

Some of our guests have got up early and joined our neighbours at their estate for a bird watching session.

Informal birdwatching opportunities

Sri Lanka really is a paradise island and there are lots of opportunities for spotting birds.

You don’t just have to visit a reserve or sanctuary. As you travel around the country you will see birdlife wherever you go.

Sri Lankan bird sanctuaries

There are a large number of wildlife sanctuaries in Sri Lanka and there are many that have a great variety of birds which will interest birdwatchers.

Sri Lanka Birdwatching Tours has a long list of great places that you should visit in Sri Lanka if you have a particular interest in birding.

It's not all about Elephants and Leopards on Safari!

There are lots of safari parks around the island that offer different experiences.

One thing that you will always find it an array of birdlife.

Lots of our guests come to GlenMyu Estate and are disappointed that they didn’t get to see that elusive Leopard. I’ve never seen a Leopard in Sri Lanka and therefore I’m not too surprised (however I am disappointed for them).

Birds are always present in the National Parks and , if you look close enough, you will get your wildlife fill from what you see.

We have developed the land to encourage wildlife to visit and forage from our five acres in the Sri Lankan Hill country.

I do not profess to be the best wildlife photographer, so my photos are not great.

Perhaps you can do better and share them with me so that I can add them to my bird photo gallery on our website?
