We love our animals at GlenMyu Estate.
There are many visitors to the estate. These include monkeys, wild boar, deer, porcupines, mongoose and many types of birds and insects.
Residents at the estate are our rescue dogs, ducks, chickens and our cow.
We did not plan to have any dogs at the estate. After our first dog, Clove, was abandoned at our gate, we have gathered some more over the years.
They provide us with love and entertainment.
We don’t think we would have been successful at growing so many vegetables and fruits at the estate if we did not have them.
They chase the monkeys, porcupines and wild boar.
We would not have the number of chickens if the dogs had not protected them. The mongoose and the eagles that swoop overhead and would love our chickens as a snack.

GlenMyu Estate is a peaceful retreat in Sri Lanka’s Uva Province.
Guests enjoy nature, comfort, and a touch of compassion.
We recently rehomed two rescue puppies and planned a short break.
Our resident dogs needed time to settle and relax.
This morning, two small puppies arrived unexpectedly!
We were alerted by loud barking from our dogs.
The puppies had wandered into the estate, looking lost and hungry.
It was clear they needed help and safety.
Despite the challenges, we never turn away a puppy in need.
Each rescue is a commitment to care and rehabilitation.
We assess their health, behaviour, and emotional needs.
Then we begin the journey towards finding them a loving home.
Rehabilitation takes time, patience, and love (and visits to the vet for assessment and vaccinations).
We provide food, shelter, and gentle socialisation.
Our goal is to prepare each puppy for adoption.
We work with trusted networks to find suitable homes.
Sri Lanka has many groups doing great work for street dogs.
We Care Worldwide offers veterinary care and sterilisation programmes.
Otara champions animal rights and responsible pet ownership.
Dogs of Ella helps rehome abandoned and injured dogs.
These organisations inspire us and support our mission.
We encourage guests to learn more and get involved. Here are some links so you can investigate a little more.
GlenMyu Estate is more than a holiday destination.
It’s a place of healing, kindness, and connection.

In the age of social media, Instagram has become the ultimate travel brochure — glossy, curated, and often misleading.
Travellers frequently arrive at restaurants, hotels, or sightseeing locations only to be met with disappointment.
The vibrancy they expected from photos fails to match real life.
Has Instagram set up unrealistic travel expectations?
At GlenMyu Estate in the heart of Sri Lanka’s Uva Province, we flip that narrative.
Guests consistently tell us that our estate looks better in person than in the photos online — and that’s no accident.
It’s pleasing to hear this from our guests. We would not want them to be disappointed.

Unlike many destinations that rely on heavily edited marketing images, most of GlenMyu Estate’s photos on platforms like Booking.com, Airbnb, and our official website are captured using a standard mobile phone — with little to no manipulation.
Guests arrive and say “wow” — not because we’ve staged perfection, but because we’ve honoured authenticity.

Anything is better outside!
When Listening to a Tik Tok/Instagram video by A Mug of Life one of the interviewees (Val) said about drinking her cup of tea the “Anything is better outside”
This resonated with me as one of the things I most like about GlenMyu Estate is that we can spend so much of the year outside.
When we lived in London, the weather conditions drove us inside for much of the year.
Living in Sri Lanka in the Hill Country, our lives have changed for the better.
We can live a lot of the year enjoying the five acre estate. It was unexpected as we did think that it rained more here than it actually does.
Surrounded by nature, the swimming pool at GlenMyu Estate is a magical place.
The refreshing water which is sourced from a spring on the property, is cool and makes you feel alive.
It is wonderful swimming surrounded by the greenery whilst listening to the birds.
You may even be joined by one of our rescue dogs while you relax and soak up the sun.
When the five acre estate was purchased it has remained fallow for several years.
It took some more time before we moved to Sri Lankan to start work.
The aim was to create an oasis for people and animals. We have planted lots of different plants and trees to attract and feed the wildlife that visits the estate.
Working with the landscape and retaining its’ features has allowed natures beauty to shine through.
The vegetables, fruits and spices that we grow at GlenMyu Estate are used as ingredients for what we cook for our guests.
Our menu consists of both Sri Lankan and Western fusion dishes. You can see what we offer by reading our menu.
Many of our guests enjoy the Sri Lankan cookery demonstration hosted by Ru and her mother.
It’s complimentary when our guests order our Sri Lankan sharing platter.
Fortunately, the climate in the Sri Lankan hill country means that we can grow a variety of crops at GlenMyu Estate.
Much of the produce is used in the dishes that we serve to our guests. As we do not use any chemicals or pesticides at the estate, you know that you are eating good organic food.
Ru regularly offers a garden tour for guests that are interested. It’s and enjoyable experience out in the fresh air discovering what fruits, vegetables and spices we grow on the estate.
Living in the Sri Lankan Hill country is amazing as the weather can change often and quickly.
One of the benefits about staying at GlenMyu Estate is that there is plenty of space to relax inside when the weather encourages you in.
We have been surprised on how much better the weather is in the hills. The result is that we have been able to spend a lot more of the year outside.
The combination of fresh air, space and being closer to nature makes you feel good.
We have found that many of our guests at GlenMyu Estate are energised and invigorated when they leave for their next destination.

An opportunity to rekindle with nature.
I was listening to the latest podcast episode of Kermode and Mayo’s Take where Jason Isaacs was being interviewed about his latest role in the film The Salt Path.
The film follows the experience of Moth and Raynor Winn as they walk along the South West Coast Path in England after suffering adversity and losing their home and livelihood .Jason plays Moth in the film and Gillan Anderson plays Moth’s wife Rae.
During the interview Jason said that he had no idea how staggering the landscape wthat Britain has such a staggering landscape was by the staggering and changing landscape of coastal path on the movies location in Cornwall.
He stated that one of the many things that he got out of the film was to rekindle with nature.
Jason mentions that Ray said that the path was a huge character and turning point in our life.
Both Ru and I believe that the landscape and five acre of land at GlenMyu Estate has had a similar affect on us. Living in this beautiful place has rekindled an appreciation for nature and changed our outlook on life.
We find that many of our guests are also affected by this amazing environment when they stay with us on holiday in Sri Lanka.
You can watch Mark Kermode’s review of The Salt Path on this YouTube video.
The film is about farmers from Staffordshire that lose their home and their experience of a year long trek walking the southern coastal path in Britain.
Moth is diagnosed with a terminal illness and the couple’s determination, love and togetherness are a mainstay of the films story.
The film is based on a 2018 memoir by Raynor Winn who records their long distance walk.
Rekindle with nature
How does staying at GlenMyu Estate reconnect our guests with nature?
When we started developing the abandoned tea estate in 2018, we wanted to encourage biodiversity back to the land.
The house has been designed to blend in with the landscape rather than stand out from it. It reflects what we want to do and also some of our personality.
We have planted hundreds of trees and shrubs and have seen an increase in the variety of animals, birds and insects that now forage from the land.
When we lived in London we felt that we were as far away from wildlife as we could be. In cities we appear to want to drive all animals and creatures away. Being out of touch made me quite scared when I came into contact with animals unless they were domesticated pets such as cats and dogs.
At GlenMyu Estate we have several dogs, ducks, chickens and even a cow and a bull. (I admit that I am still a little bit scared of the cow!).
There are also many daily visitors to the five acre estate. The Monkeys eat our Jackfruit, Avocados and Mangos.
An array of birds feed from the bounty that is provided by the plants and trees that we have planted around the estate.
There are lots of opportunity to rekindle with nature at GlenMyu Estate.
Wandering around the pathways and breathing in the fresh air.
Listening to the birds early in the morning or as they go back to their nests in the evening.
Watching the dogs play together after their breakfast which gives them the energy to race around with each other.
Swimming in the pool surrounded by a sea of green and other colours from the flowers and other plants that grow here.

Looking up at GlenMyu Estate and appreciating nature.
This morning I dumped my phone and just sat on black metal chair next to the lawn.
Listening to the birds, I inhaled deeply and connected with the nature around me.
Instead of looking at the grass that I needed to cut on the lawn, I looked up.
The early morning sun was glistening through the trees feeding me with vitamin D.
A kaleidoscope of greens and blues in the canopy above are colours that soothe the mind and I feel connected with nature.
I am joined by two of our rescue dogs at my side seeking a comforting touch.
Animals and wildlife are all part of what makes GlenMyu Estate a special place.
I, of course, had to pick up my phone to take the photos and video to add colour to my scribble.
Don’t worry, it was discarded again in quick time so that I could return to my mornings meditation.
There are many places in the house and around the five acre estate where you can connect with nature.
The view from the lounges and the bedrooms often provide you with the sensation of being above and below the clouds.
Watching the clouds form and pass across the valleys below is more fulfilling than watching a screen, however big or small.
We have many guests that stay at GlenMyu Estate who race around the island to tick as many things of their Sri Lankan bucket list as possible.
When they arrive and settle in, many slow down and use their time here to get grounded and reenergised.
The environment in our five acres of Sri Lankan Hill country appears to guide you to refocus and take some much needed time out.

When guests stay with us at GlenMyu Estate, I often hear them comment that it must be wonderful living in paradise.
Like most things, what you see looks great, but the reality is that it’s not all paradise.
A lot of work, a little bit of stress and a few obstacles in the way led top the creation of our piece of paradise.
There are still challenges every day, however, they are minor and worth meeting for us to be able to life our lives in Sri Lanka.
GlenMyu Estate was far from a paradise when we saw the abandoned five acres back in 2011.
It was in such a mess that we were not able to see much of it.
The Guinea Grass was so high that we were only able to scramble through around 150 metres of rough landscape before turning around.
We had searched for a piece of land each year on our annual holiday in Sri Lanka.
The search was exhausting. We often were excited to reach the land being offered after a tumultuous journey down a never ending unmade path, only to be disappointed.
The journey had taken us ten hours on the train from Colombo Fort to Haputale followed by a Tuk Tuk ride to see what would become GlenMyu Estate.
Ru was happy that she could see some water traveling itself across the land. There was also an electricity line at the road.
I was happy that the access was from the main A4 road and not down a two kilometre bumpy track.
The price was okay, and I said to Ru that she should buy it.
I always had in my back of my mind that at least Ru would have some land. It could always be sold if we found something better.
After plunging a large sum into building a road that accessed the centre of the land we had to follow our money.
In the rains you come across leeches.
Having lived for many in the concrete jungle of London, where we chase away any wildlife, leeches were quite scary.
It took me some time before I accepted that giving an animal a little meal from blood that was surplus to my requirement was okay.
What I found was that if I cut the grass on GlenMyu Estate quite short on the pathways and lawn, the leeches disappear. They can’t handle any sun and really need long wet grass to live in.
So, we avoid the long grass and keep the pathways in good condition.
If you have ever watched Grand Designs there is a regular pattern.
It starts with an ambitious project with a budget that may not be enough.
Delays, weather, difficulties in getting material and changes in specification along the way results in project delays.
We went through all these experiences during the development of GlenMyu Estate. There are so many stories that are in the back of my mind, one day I will put them down on paper. I think I haven’t so far as some bring back too many painful memories.
We didn’t have a timescale for the project.
The global pandemic occurred during our build and we really didn’t know that anyone would be travelling again to stay in the house.
At one point I thought that GlenMyu Estate would be an abandoned project and we would move back to the UK to a normal life.
It took around three years before we moved into the house at GlenMyu Estate.
Eventually, we moved our belongings into the upper floor of the property.
It was all worth it in the end.
‘You can never get bored of living here’
This is another phrase that we hear very often. The reaction that our guests have when they walk through the doors and see the view from the lounge makes us feel very humble.
When your landscape is similar every day, it is easy to treat it as normal and not appreciate it for what it really is.
We love having guests stay with us at GlenMyu Estate for many reasons. One is that thy keep us grounded and ensure that we appreciate this bit of paradise we have created.
There are lots of elements that make this five acre piece of land in the Sri Lankan hills a paradise for us.
We are fortunate to be living in a microclimate that enables so many plants to grow. Ruwanthi is always happy to provide a garden tour for interested guests to see the spices, fruits and vegetables that we grow.
The climate is also great for us. It’s not too hot nor too cold.
Typically the temperature during the day ranges from 22 to 26 degrees Celsius. When it does reach 28 degrees there are plenty of trees to get some shade. The climate means that we don’t need to use air-conditioning. We are pleased that we don’t have that negative impact on the environment.
I always say that we have worked with nature and not pushed her too much. Living on a slope, if you push too much then nature will let you know it. We have planted lots of trees and carried out as many steps as we can to stop the erosion on the hillside. Terraces of rock walls and hedgerows have been created all around the land.
Nature provides natural beauty. By working with nature it has created a more beautiful and calming environment than we could have planned.
Water is important and Ruwanthi spotted the streams crossing the land on our first visit. Thankfully we have springs going through the gully or glen.
This means that we have water throughout the year which helps with the gardens.
We have created a natural spring fed swimming pool which is one of our favourite places at GlenMyu Estate. It’s refreshing whether you have been working all day or experiencing one of the Pekoe Trail Hikes or Horton Plains National Park
Surrounded by nature, it’s an amazing place to be.
The whole of GlenMyu Estate is designed to connect you with nature. Ru took some inspiration from architect Geoffrey Bawa to bring the outside in.
Floor to ceiling windows in the bedrooms and lounges are focussed to make the best of the environment. It is calming watching the clouds sail along by, or sometimes come and touch the windows.
Our food menu is mainly plant based. We source as much ingredients as we can from the garden or locally to the estate.
The garden produce are one of the elements of living in paradise. Eating seasonal from the garden is when the produce tastes the best.
What a feeling I have eating mandarins that have been picked from the garden. Slicing a lemon for the occasional G & T that I know has not travelled very far adds to the taste.
We love it but we are also sad when guests say that they would have wanted to stay longer and do not want to leave.
Unfortunately many guests only have a short time to see this wonderful paradise island. Holiday allocation limits their ability to stay in one place for too long. Recently we have had more four days stays. However, this is still not long enough to really relax on the property and also explore the places too see within reach of the estate.

Hotels in Sri Lanka for dog lovers and a swimming pool.
GlenMyu Estate is located in five acres of the Sri Lankan hill country , just over one hours drive from Ella.
We find that our guests like to stay out of the touristy areas but be within reach so that they can visit and experience the beautiful places to see in the area.
The swimming pool at GlenMyu Estate is filled by a natural spring and you will sometimes be accompanied by one of our dogs who will watch over you whilst you swim.
Here are some of the dogs that you will meet at GlenMyu Estate
We are proud to say that we have re-homed many puppies over the time we have lived in Sri Lanka.
It got a little more difficult to find homes in 2022 during the financial crisis experienced by the country.
However, recently (February 2025), we have managed to re-home three street dogs. They are all settled in their new homes with loving owners.
We aim to give all dogs that go through pour hands the best start in life as possible.
By staying with us at GlenMyu Estate, part of the money you pay goes to supporting the dogs.
The dogs at the estate are fed, housed and get their annual vaccinations.
We feed street dogs in Beragala town and have recently been supporting a female who gave birth to five puppies.
As some of the local Sri Lankans find it costly to spay or neuter their dogs, we provide funding to ease the financial pressure.
We love our swimming pool.
It is surrounded by a sea of green and listening to the bords as you swim is a joy.
The pool os not overlooked by the house and our guests like the level of privacy.
As we only have three guest bedrooms you will often find that you are the only guests at the swimming pool.
Some families or friends book all three rooms at the estate and have the luxury of having the pool all to themselves.
It’s a perfect place to relax, have some fun and make memories that will last for a long time.
Don’t you hate the chlorine smell when swimming and when you get out of the pool.
I just can’t wait to have a shower and remove that chemical odour.
As our swimming pool is filled from a natural spring and is constantly flowing, we do not use chlorine in the pool.
It’s and amazing experience and great to know that you are swimming in water as natural as it should be.

All our dogs are vaccinated, friendly, and used to meeting guests.
Our dogs don’t know how lucky they are.
So many of our guests at GlenMyu Estate comment on the paradise that the dogs live in.
They are loved, get plenty of petting and are fed well.
GlenMyu Estate has five acres of land and we really think that the dogs see it as their playground.
It’s wonderful watching them run around the land, investigate and play.
GlenMyu Estate is a place for dog lovers.
We always send a message to guests that book with us that we have dogs at the estate.
If you are uncomfortable with dogs, then GlenMyu Estate is not the place for you. There are lots of other hotels, villas and guest houses for you to choose from on the island that are pet free.
We clearly are dog lovers and all the animals that live at the GlenMyu Estate.
There are also chickens, ducks, a cow and a bull.
Other animals visit the estate to forage. There are monkeys that come to the trees to eat our Jackfruit, Mangoes and Avocados when they are in season.
As this is our dogs home we don’t allow guests to bring their pets.
The dogs are quite territorial. It would not be relaxing for both us and the guests if we were to be worried about the safety of your pet.

Little did I know how much I would love my life on the balcony.
Life on the balcony only play part of my day….but I love this time.
Sitting on the balcony, listening to the sounds of the birds gossiping in the background, seeing the light provide light and shade on the trees creating an kaleidoscope of greens is where I need to be now.
There is an amazing Sri Lankan Fig Tree next to the balcony. When it fruits it is full of life and sometimes I am joined by birds, monkeys and other animals that forage from the tree.
We have several rescue dogs at GlenMyu Estate. I am often joined by one of two of the dogs who survey the land below for any form of predators.
Clove sits with her chin on the lower railing as she scours the landscape.
It’s a chill out time for me and the dogs.
There is little or no stress.
Nature soothes the soul and I have realised how good it is for me.
I love this time on the balcony.
I am dressed in shorts and a t-shirt.
Little did I know how comfortable it would be spending most of my day out of my two piece suit and shoes.
I think back to February in London. Often there would be snow on the ground to navigate on my commute to the city.
The chill, enhanced by the wind was not pleasant.
Don’t you miss the seasons.
Not at all.
We do have seasons, guided by the two monsoons. but they don’t attack the senses as acutely as that experience in the UK.
It’s a February morning, our guests are up early and enjoying the last roam around the garden and dip in the pool before heading towards Negombo.
They fly back to the UK tomorrow to thier lives in London.
I think back to my time in London, which seems to be a lifetime ago.
I do not miss it.
My annual trip does nothing to reinvigorate the fondest I had for that wonderful capital.
I’m often asked what I miss.
It’s eight years since I left the UK and my answer is easy.
Friends and family.
Don’t you miss the food, the theatre, live music and the energy.
I did love all those things, and many more during my thirty years there.
However, with age and experience, Sri Lanka is the right place at this time of my life.
We eat what is local and seasonal in Sri Lanka. This was how people used to eat before we added air miles to the food we eat by bringing it halfway around the world so we can eat out of season.
What I have found is that the way we eat is healthier and the food just takes better. It helps that Ru and the team are fantastic cooks.
My time on the balcony provides me with some me time. I don’t feel guilty as I think it is a god use of my time.
You health is your wealth is what the wealthier clients at my bank used to say. Spending time on my own wellness and wellbeing is a good use of my time.

When you visit Sri Lanka you will come across lots of Street dogs as you travel around the country.
Street dogs were highlighted in Dr Scotts Animals of Asia for ITV’s This Morning programme.
There are around 3 million street dogs in Sri Lanka.
They don’t want a home however, they need feeding, medical and support.
Spaying and neutering dogs in Sri Lanka will help keep the over population of street dogs in Sri Lanka under control.
Ben Fogle has visited Janey on two occasions which highlighted the issues with street dogs in Sri Lanka.
Dr Janey and her team at We Care Worldwide do a fabulous job and are deserving of support.
Find out more about We Care Worldwide by visiting their website.
There are many other organisations doing great work supporting, feeding, caring and arranging adoptions for the street dogs in Sri Lanka.
Here are a few links to others in Sri Lanka that are worthy of your support.
At GlenMyu Estate, we have collected several dogs since we moved to the area in 2018.
We did peak at around 35 when our first dog, Clove, managed to have 7 puppies with her first litter! Yes, we were in trouble.
However, as Clove has a wonderful personality, all of her puppies were in great demand. Is she had 20 puppies, we could have found homes for them all.
We kept one, her grumpy son Roti.
At this date (November 2024), we have 9 rescue dogs that live on the 5 acre estate.
They are all vaccinated, friendly, and love meeting guests.
Some of our guests come and stay at GlenMyu Estate to meet the dogs and explore the many wonderful places to visit within a drive from the estate.
If you read our reviews, you will see that our guests really love their experience at GlenMyu Estate whilst they are on holiday in Sri Lanka.
By staying with us, you support employment for local people and also help to feed and care for our 9 dogs, ducks, chickens, cow and bull!

It’s easy to develop an interest in bird watching in Sri Lanka. The birds appear to be more interesting on this paradise island.
Whether it is the colours of their feathers or just the light that they fly in, it has heightened my interest.
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.
It’s easy to develop an interest in birdwatching in Sri Lanka.
There are many endemic species, residents and migrants to spark your curiosity.
According to Nature Odyssey, currently there are 33 identified species of endemic birds in Sri Lanka, out of which most are found in the wet zone
I didn’t really have much of an interest in birdwatching when I lived the UK.
Since living in Sri Lanka my curiosity about all forms of nature has increased. Perhaps it’s just living in a place that is surrounded by nature.
Maybe it’s because the birds appears to have so much more colour than those in the UK.
At GlenMyu Estate we are really fortunate that some of our neighbours have a lifetime interest in birdwatching.
They have helped develop our interest in birding and we have often had informal early birdwatching session with our neighbours on the estate.
Some of our guests have got up early and joined our neighbours at their estate for a bird watching session.
Sri Lanka really is a paradise island and there are lots of opportunities for spotting birds.
You don’t just have to visit a reserve or sanctuary. As you travel around the country you will see birdlife wherever you go.
There are a large number of wildlife sanctuaries in Sri Lanka and there are many that have a great variety of birds which will interest birdwatchers.
Sri Lanka Birdwatching Tours has a long list of great places that you should visit in Sri Lanka if you have a particular interest in birding.
There are lots of safari parks around the island that offer different experiences.
One thing that you will always find it an array of birdlife.
Lots of our guests come to GlenMyu Estate and are disappointed that they didn’t get to see that elusive Leopard. I’ve never seen a Leopard in Sri Lanka and therefore I’m not too surprised (however I am disappointed for them).
Birds are always present in the National Parks and , if you look close enough, you will get your wildlife fill from what you see.
Nowadays, no-one leaves home without their mobile phone. Sure, you can snap away when you spot any wildlife.
However, carrying your binoculars with you means that you are more likely to get a good view of the birds you will see Ella round the island.
If you are interested in birdwatching spending time at GlenMyu Estate will provide you with lots of opportunities to see a variety fo birdlife.
You can see some of the birds that I have managed to capture with my camera by pressing on the following link.
This sanctuary is located within reach of GlenMyu Estate, just outside of Haputale.
Some of the sanctuary falls within Stage 12 of the new Pekoe Trail and therefore you can get some exercise, see some fabulous views and practice your hobby all on the same day.
Throughout the year we have regular flying visitors at GlenMyu Estate.
We have developed the land to encourage wildlife to visit and forage from our five acres in the Sri Lankan Hill country.

It’s hard to explain to someone that doesn’t have a pet that they adore with undying love.
Before we moved to Sri Lanka, my wife and I didn’t have pets of our own.
I remember my boss at the bank losing his dog to a hot and run by a car. My thoughts were, it’s only a dog and I’m sure you will get over it. I managed to deal with the loss of elder family members, so a dog should be no problem.
If you have a pet and it lives to a ripe old age, although it is heartbreaking when they pass.
Eventually you can accept that they are fine because they had a good, loving and fulfilled life.
They were treated like a member of the family and were the recipients of unequivocal love. It was their time to go and they had a good life.
Being responsible for a dog is a special experience that is hard to communicate to someone that has not had a relationship with a dog.
From afar, it would be understandable for someone to have the view that you have so many dogs, if you lose one, then it’s not really a problem.
Clove was our first dog. We got so lucky! Clove and her sister were delivered to us by our staff who had seen that they had been dumped at the entrance to GlenMyu Estate. She had been abandoned along with her brother an sister and were all were the sim of my palm.
The brother had perished by the time that our staff had alerted us to these unwanted pups.
Reluctantly we took in the two waifs and named them Clove and Cinnamon due to they dark coats and relaationship with the spices of Sri Lanka
Cinnamon didn’t make it. That is another story. We failed Cinnamon and it meant that Clove was precious to us.
Perhaps she was a spoilt child. The guilt led us to be overprotective to this petite soul that we felt that we had a obligation to protect. Clove was over from outside to inside. She was allowed to sit and snuggle in between us on our expensive London department store settee.
We fell in love with this adorable, fun bundle of joy that was full of love that we envied. She broke into our hearts and would never leave us.
The sickest of dogs that was not meant to live. A desperate plea by a neighbour to try to save this dying dogs. We picked that half alive bundle and took him to the nearest vet. A saline drip and several injections limped life into this lost soul.
We were travelling from the Sri Lankan Hill Country to the countries Capital of Colombo and he would hopefully recuperate with my in-laws.
Fortunately for this waif, my other in law had several dogs through her hands over the year. A dose of worm liquid delivered the main problems then next morning. A mess in the garden but issues expelled giving a hope for the future.
Convelescene in Colombo was the doctors orders and over time Fleur was managed back to “reasonable health”. A bad start in life led to ongoing medical problems. Multiple visits to various vets gave hope for an average life.
Loved (and named) by our nieces and spoilt by may mother in law Fleur was weaned back to reasonable health.
However, he was a dog that was always going to need regular care and vet visits. He has touched our hearts and we were committed to doing as much as we could.
Living in Colombo, Fleur, being a really furry creature, was happiest under the air conditioning unit. We concluded that dogs with fur should not be living in 36 degrees celcius.
With the air and graces of a Colombo City dog, Fleaur was eventually despatched back to the area where he was born in th Sri Lankan Hills.
It was a challenge meeting and assimilating with his new brothers and sisters at Glenmyu Estate. A loner dog that was used to being King of the Hill had to adapt. Fights, working out places in the hierarchy, and domain were eventually agreed and harmony mainly existed. There is always the occasional toff between brothers and sisters!
Clove believes that all our guests visit to meet and spoil her. She is a special soul that can reach into you heart within seconds of meeting. Clove has an energy of love that makes is hard for you not to reciprocate.
Fleur was our other star at GlenMyu Estate. This furry ball was hard not to fall in love with. We were embarrassed often about his antics with our guest, but all were taken in the spirit that they were given.
A photo bomb at a wedding photo shoot at the estate. The star of many a photo with our guests. Turning the fear of dogs for small children into love. We has so many guests asking to take Fleur home with them.
For me, I will always appreciate the time he spent with me as I was working in the garden at the estate. Fleur would spend hours with me as I worked in the garden, He would demand some attention occasionally, but appreared to just like being near me as I worked. Perhaps he was my casual security guard, just making sure I was safe from snakes or other dangers I might face as I went about my work.
I just really appreciated his company, An occasional rub of his head was all he required to be content.
My birthday in February 2022 was a great event. Neighbours and guests at GlenMyu Estate had a great evening. Poor quality wine and fabulous food was sampled. Conversations and debates were had over the course of the evening and a good time was had by all.
The next day the question was asked ‘Where is Fleur?”.
He had not returned to my mother in law, who now lived at GlenMyu Estate the previous evening. It was not unusual for him, and the other dogs, to want to sleep outside in the warm February nights.
A no show for breakfast meant that we stated to worry.
Search and rescue teams were sent out and returned with disappointing results.
I drove for miles in search of our absent dog. I feared that he had met with an accident on the road.
We were bereft as we were unsuccessful in our search.
Posters were printed and displayed. Many red herrings were followed up in our quest to be reunited with Fleur.
Trips to and back from Colombo and Banderawella were treacherous as I couldn’t concentrate on the road as I searched for dogs on the side of the road.
Two years on I still look for Fleur.
My thoughts are “Why did you pick my birthday to disappear?”. Is that the depressing memory you want me to have on my special day. It’s not that I want to feel better in my misery. But could you not have chosen another day. My hope would be that my birthday would be a happy occasion every year.
I had given up hope and hoped he has passed. We were always concerned that if someone had taken our lovely character that he would be abandoned when the stealers worked out how many time he would need to be seen by the vet.
A chance video on Tik Tok in July 2024 gave us hope. Hopefully what we saw was not a Doppleganger and our hopes are going too be dashed. Confidence is low, but what can we do but investigate with the hope that we will be reunited.
My confidence is at an all time low but we have to go.
I wonder whether I will get any sleep tonight on the anticipation that I will be reunited by and old loving friend. Tonight I will hope and pray that we will have happy ending.
If we do find Fleur we will hold him so close he will never leave us again.
Both my wife and I were anxious and full of hope that we might find our missing dog.
We had not visited Bomburu Ella Waterfall before. In order to maintain a positive outlook, if we didn’t manage to find Fleur, then at least we would see something new.
The waterfall is located near to Nuwara Eliya and was around a one hour forty minute (51 kilometre) drive away.
We set off early on a Monday after a long weekend. If we had gone on the weekend, then the waterfall would have been very busy with local tourists.
It was an enjoyable drive to the waterfall and we parked close to the walkway up to the falls.
There were a few other Sri Lankan tourists who had extended their weekend to enjoy Bomburu Ella.
We asked the person taking the money for parking about the dog and showed him the video.
He recognised the dog and this gave us the encouragement to start the walk.
The pathway was a little hard to navigate, but with advice from some locals we were on our way.
Climbing up a concrete pathway we were amazed by the view of the agricultural landscape below.
We were pleased to see the recycling bins and the notice boards asking people to dispose of rubbish properly.
Entry fees to Bomburua Ella Waterfall are quite reasonable.
LKR 700 is around US$2.50
(August 2024)
Entry Fees (Sri Lankan Rupees)
Local Adult 100
Local Child 30
Foreign Adult 700
Foreign Child 300
After the heartbreak of the disappointment, we thought that we would make the best of the day and carry on to the waterfall.
We certainly needed something to cheer us up and put a smile back on our faces.
Bomburu Ella Falls were the right tonic for us.
What an amazing sight. The falls are spectacular, albeit we did not visit in the best weather. The local Sri Lankans that were enjoying an extended their long weekend added to the atmosphere. It’s great being surrounded by people that are having fun.
Our mistake was not to have brought our swimming costumes with us. We had focused on finding our lost dog, and therefore we couldn’t enjoy the full experience of Bomburu Ella.
However, the amount of rubbish dumped in the pools and the streams made it less attractive an option. We will certainly visit Bomburu Ella Falls again, but we will steer well clear of a busy long holiday weekend.
After chatting to the ticket attendant on the way out, he assured us that a team would be picking up the litter later on during the week.
Sri Lanka is full of many sights of outstanding beauty. It’s unfortunate that education pressing local people to look after their natural environment and not use it as a garbage dump had not been effective. We hope that in future years the people will respect this amazing environment and take their litter with them.

How to relax.
Reading relaxation tips recommended by Mind Organisation.
I was not surprised to see many tips that relate to GlenMyu Estate.
We find that our guests really need some downtime on their holiday. It can be quite tiring rushing around the country visiting the tourist spots in the heat.
As they leave ready for their next adventure, we can see that they are relaxed and energised for the next part of their trip around this paradise island.
The tips were as follows:
Mind Organisation say that “We’re Mind. We’re here to fight for mental health. For support, for respect, for you”.
They are an organisation that aims to get support and respect for people experiencing a mental health problem.
As GlenMyu Estate has evolved over the last two years since opening, we have found that our guests naturally do several of the items on the list whilst they are on holiday here.
Clearly being on holiday, guests are taking a break from their normal everyday lives.
However, we also find that many of our guests take a break from their travel and exploration of the island when they are here.
Often, they decide to chill out at the five acre estate rather than packing too much in on their holiday.
As the Sri Lankan hill country has a temperature more akin to a UK summer, some find it a relief to get away from stifling heat.
Many of our guests say that that they get their best nights sleep at GlenMyu Estate on their holiday. We do not use air-conditioning at the property as it is not required as it does not get too hot.
Active relaxation is gentle exercise such as walling (at your own pace), classes such as Yoga, Pilates or gentle stretching.
At GlenMyu Estate for guest enjoy walking around the garden.
The property is on a slope and therefore you automatically do some gentle exercise by climbing up the pathways and stairs. I often find myself creating a little heavier due to the slope.
GlenMyu Estate is an environment which inspires creativity. We have had several guests bring their sketchbooks or paints with them to spend time on their art.
Picking up the camera to take some photos and videos.
Some authors have stayed at the estate and worked on their books without the detraction of home.
It delights us that we have created an environment that guests can relax and get creative.
At GlenMyu Estate we have tried to work with nature and plant species that enhance and repair the biodiversity that was wiped from the land.
Historically the estate was part of a larger tea plantation and subsequently used to grow sugar cane. After being abandoned for many year it was full of Guinea Grass, fast growing cattle fodder. This took all the light and nutrients in the soil from other plants.
After years of replacing the Guinea Grass with endemic species and planting to develop a food forest for animals and humans GlenMyu Estate was open to guests.
Our guest love the garden tour and seeing what we fruits, vegetables, and spices are grown.
For some, it is a revelation on where their food comes from and the work entailed to get to onto their plate.
There is also plenty of wildlife to see, whether it is the animals and birds that are regular visitors or the residents on the land.
There is no need to picture yourself, because you are there in the moment.
GlenMyu Estate is a beautiful environment reflecting the nature that surrounds us.
We find natures music to be the soundtrack that we listen to at GlenMyu Estate.
Whether it its the streams full of water blocking out unwanted noises.
Or the birds that let you know that it’s time to get up in the morning or that they are off to bed.
Natuure’s soundtrack helps you to relax.
Although we do have free Wifi at GlenMyu Estate, we are always delighted on how little our guests spend on their devices.
We also do not have televisions at the estate. Who needs to watch poor quality programming anyway. Netflix will be waiting for you when you get home!
This allows you to live in the moment, reduce stress and really enjoy your holiday.
We love it when our guests are truly relaxed after their stay at GlenMyu Estate.
It is really important for you to make sure you allocate some downtime during your vacation. Hopefully you will visit GlenMyu Estate and switch off in this environment delivered by nature.

No Televisions, No Problem
I don’t know about you, but I really didn’t enjoy watching television when I was away on holiday.
Whenever we would get to our hotel room my wife and I would flick through the channels to find something that we would like.
There is something about watching television when you are in your own country.
You know what you like, you know when the program is on and you know where to find your favourite programme.
We tended to watch a lot fo BBC programmes in the UK and therefore didn’t to have to deal with advertisement breaks.
There is something about the rhythm of the programme, even when you watch commercial tv, that is quite comforting. You are used to the timing and the length of the advert break. Years of programming our brains makes it alright.
However, I used to get frustrated watching television on holiday as the rhythm wasn’t comfortable for me.
It was a real turnoff.
So, I didn’t watch any television programmes when I went on holiday.
Since moving to Sri Lanka in 2016 the world has been through some incredible changes.
Sitting down in front of the television to relax after a stressful day in the office is no longer the norm.
The global pandemic left lots of people stuck at home looking for entertainment to while away the hours.
Netflix and other streaming services became the go to place for entertainment. Binge watching box sets was what everyone was talking about.
When we were in the UK we only watched a few programmes when they were being broadcasted. Most if what we viewed was on catch up.
Since living in Sri Lanka we have been weaned off television.
I could see from our first six months on the island that we really craved our favourite programmes that we enjoyed together.
However, as we couldn’t get our usual BBC programmes, we used to buy the occasional DVD and watch them together.
The environment in the Sri Lankan Hill Country has changed our requirements in life. It’s hard not to be affected by the surrounding nature. Whether it’s the noise from the birds, the ever changing view from the lounges or spending time on the five acre estate, sitting in front of a square box does not seem to be important now. If we don’t know who is in Masterchef, the Bake Off or Strictly, it really doesn’t matter.
Living in London for many years we were really out of touch with nature. So many people living in big cities must be in the same position.
I don’t know what happened to me.
In the UK I wasn’t interested in birds and trees. My inquisitiveness appears to have been injected into my veins since living here. Planting trees and watching them grow, getting up early to catch the birdsong or making sure I catch the sunset sky.
It’s hard to get the feeling over to you. You really need to come and experience this for yourself.

Dogs in Sri Lanka.
When you visit Sri Lanka on holiday you will see lots of dogs in a poor condition.
Learn how you can help and what we do.
The plight of Sri Lankan dogs was highlighted again when Ben Fogle visited British Vet, Janey Lowes, who lives in Sri Lanka. (Channel 5, Series 18, Episode 11).
Bon Fogle originally met Janey Lowes in 2019 (Channel 5, Series 9, Episode 4).
The update highlights the uncontrollable issues that have added to the pressure on the work WeCare Worldwide does in Sri Lanka. With events such as the global pandemic, the economic crisis and the lack of medicines available during the period increased the challenge caring for the dogs.
We at GlenMyu Estate also were affected by the issues that were beyond our control.
Over the years since we moved to the Sri Lankan hill country we have cared for and re-homed many street dogs.
Historically, after giving the puppies that were dropped off at GlenMyu Estate, a good start in life, vaccinations, nutritious food and medical care, we were able to re-home many puppies.
We have also funded spaying and neutering dogs villagers close to the estate. Many of our neighbours do not have the means to pay for the surgery. The aim was to control the rise in dog population and ensure that the females did not have letters every seasons of their lives.
The effects of the financial crisis in Sri Lanka during 2022 and its recovery since led to us finding it more difficult in er-homing dogs.
People had to think carefully as to whether they could afford to care for a puppy when inflation was so high reaching 60% and incomes had not followed.
There was also a lack of medicines during this period coming into the country. This led to an additional concern as to whether vaccinations would be available to protect the dogs. A major concern was the shortage of rabies vaccines which would create a health risk of the owners and their families.
There are several organisations, in addition to WeCare Worldwide that care for street dogs in Sri Lanka.
Embark has been transforming the lives of street dogs and the communities they live in since 2007.
They do great work for dogs in Sri Lanka by providing medication, spaying and neutering and finding new homes.
Dogs Of Ella is where the stray dogs from the hills of Ella and neighboring towns come to claim their second chance at life.
They have more than 30 rescues currently residing in the Ella shelter
Similar to us at GlenMyu Estate, there are lots of individual around the island that are all doing their bit to help the street dogs.
Many Sri Lankans feed the street dogs in their local area. We had personal experience of this when we lived in Colombo before moving to the Sri Lankan hill country.
A retired doctor drove around the neighbourhood in the mornings and evenings feeding the street dogs in the area.
Feeding the dogs at GlenMyu Estate. Twice a day, 100 kg of rice a month makes several happy dogs.
Some of guests at GlenMyu Estate enjoy helping feed our dogs when they holiday in Sri Lanka.

Ben Fogle and the Sri Lankan Vet.
Channel 5’s New Lives in the Wild revisited Janey, the British vet, who cares for dogs in Sri Lanka.
Ben Fogle’s original visit to see Janey Lowes work, was aired in 2019 on the Channel 5 series.
The latest program highlights how the charity WeCare Worldwide is struggling to cope with the growth since 2016. Capacity at it’s home in Talalla, funding and a shortage in medicines such as rabies shots are key issues.
You can read more in the following Daily Mirror Article.
Janey is confident in approaching street dogs in Sri Lanka. You can watch this clip on Facebook of Janey and Ben meeting a stray dog.
Janey diagnoses the issues that the dog has before starting some treatment.

Ben Fogle has an Instagram page where you can read all about the people and places he meets and visits on New Lives in the Wild.
The British vet is located on the south coast of Sri Lanka. She has been doing amazing things for the animals that she treats since she moved to this paradise island.
WeCare Worldwide is a worthy charity which is in need of support.
Please visit their website to find out more information and see how you can provide help and support.
You can follow Janey on her Instagram account to see what she has been doing since the TV program.
Animal Charities is a website which has a blog on what animals charities you can help.
They have highlighted WeCare Worldwide on their most recent blog.
If you want to know more about Janey’s storey, you can read this article “Rugby WAG turned street vet reveals how a row with her ex at the airport changed her life forever” published in MailOnline in May 2021.
Dr Janey does fantastic work. There are several other organisations that also support street dogs.
Local to GlenMyu Estate is Dogs’ of Ella.
We, at GlenMyu Estate, are aware of the work that the Dogs of Ella charity does for two reasons.
Firstly, we met co-founder of the charity, Jessica Nehlich, when we were visiting the vet in Bandarawella with some of our dogs for treatment.
Jessica was there with three dogs being treated by Uva Pet Care Animal hospital.
We also knew about Dogs of Ella as we have had guests from Germany and the Netherlands who have visited the charity, volunteered and provided some financial support.
Philanthropist, Otara Gunewardene, through the Otara Foundation, founded Embark which work to improve the welfare of street dogs in Sri Lanka.
Many dogs are provided with healthcare before being fostered or adopted.
Here are some videos that show the great work that the foundations supports.
Another excellent initiative is by Tails of Freedom which is a non profit organisation in Sri Lanka.
It is dedicated to the rescue of abused purebred companion animals.
At GlenMyu Estate, we love our animals.
We have taken in and re-homed many puppies since we moved to the area in 2018.
Our rescue dogs are an important part of the estate and our guests really enjoy interacting with them.
They are used to regularly receiving and entertaining our guests.
You will also find rescue cows and chickens at the estate. We enjoy telling our gifts all about stories of how they arrived here.

The title of one of my regular podcasts intrigued me. Here’s what I learnt from The High Performance Podcast.
One of my pastimes in Sri Lanka at GlenMyu Estate, in between visitors, is to listen to podcasts.
Some are educational, some are for my mental health and others are just for fun.
One of our guests and I were chatting about podcasts. He runs a successful business in Colombo and continues his business education with a mentor.
The mentor suggested that he listen to The High Performance Podcast.
This was a podcast that was not in my list of regular listening. The guest liked the podcast as there were lots of interviews with renowned and successful sportspeople, amongst others.
As the guest was interested in a range of sports there was a motivation to listen regularly to this podcast.
This podcast is hosted by Jake Humphrey and Professor Damian Hughes.
Jake is a former television presenter. He stepped away from presenting sports to concentrate on the High Performance Podcast.
Damian is a Professor of Psychology and Change. He has written several books and is a keynote speaker.
They aim to “turn the lived experiences of the planet’s highest performers into your life lessons”.
This is a catchy and intriguing title is important to capture ones interest and it worked with me.
A British Airways Survey for YouGov revealed that “survey reveals 50% of UK working adults do not take their full annual leave allocation”.
Amazingly ” a third of working Brits (36%) who did not take their full annual leave said it was because they ‘just didn’t get around to it”.
And “42% confessed that they have felt stressed about work whilst on holiday”.
A 40-year study by the European Society of Cardiology revealed that taking a holiday could help people live longer.
At the ESC Congress in Munich, Germany (28 Aug 2018), Professor Strandberg said: “The harm caused by the intensive lifestyle regime was concentrated in a subgroup of men with shorter yearly vacation time. In our study, men with shorter vacations worked more and slept less than those who took longer vacations. This stressful lifestyle may have overruled any benefit of the intervention. We think the intervention itself may also have had an adverse psychological effect on these men by adding stress to their lives.”
Feeling that you always have to be present at work, always connected and available is dangerous in the form of stress and burnout.
Whoop (the Health Monitor Band company) employees are rewarded for getting adequate sleep and rest. What a great idea.
They realise that fully shutting off from work is not always possible. Sometimes a compromise is required. Jake has an agreement with his wife that his work phone is locked in a safe all day and in the evening he is allowed 10 -15 minutes to pick up work calls and e-mails.
Joe Wicks has a technique where he takes time out as “mini retirements” where he takes on less work and is present with his family and friends. This was a result of hearing a phrase “don’t wait until you are older to retire, have mini retirements every year”.
Dr Peter Atia gave Damian and idea to have a sequin phone so that he could turn off.
What a great idea! (apart from the potential landfill question when phones are at the end of their lives).
Having a phone that is only used for personal and family matters can allow you to switch off from the office. If it does not have WhatsApp, Email and job related accessibility, it can just be used for family photos and family calls.
Alex Scott loves to travel. She gets her education and learning about life from travelling around the world, learning about different cultures and meeting people.
She says that it gives her so much energy and makes her fell alive.
Getting the team to take full responsibility when you are away.
It’s sometimes hard to delegate but it can be really good for your team. If you can get your team on board that when a colleague is on holiday they will not be contacted under any circumstances it will be good for both you and your workmates.
Shane Pariss did an exercise with Jake where he asked him what are the most important things in his life?
Jake replied “his children, his wife and finding some time for himself”.
Shane then asked him to show him his diary and he would show Jake his priorities!
Jake and Damian provide a few tips on how to have a High Performance Holiday.
Delete all, your work apps (or lock your phone up or get a non work phone).
Plan your holiday well in advance.
Create a boundary in the office where no-one is contacted whilst on holiday.
Keep away from tech when you are on holiday
Be where your feet are – make sure you are fully there and connected in the moment when you are away.
Have some downtime between activities – holidays should not be totally organised.
Remember why you are going on holiday.
There are elements that allow our guests to have a high performance holiday when they are at GlenMyu Estate.
Although we do provide free Wi Fi for our guests we find that it is not used very much when they are here on holiday. The environment appears be right for people to switch off and appreciate the environment and enjoy nature.
I love it when I see guests sitting on the sofas in our lounge reading a book or just watching the clouds.
Walking around the estate or spending time at the swimming pool is a good form of exercise bot physically and mentally. The opportunity to listen to the bird song, watch our ducks in the stream or pet our dogs are simple things in life away from all the tech back home.
Although lots of our guests do explore the wonderful sights in the hill country, many change their plans and just spend time on the estate to relax.
Watching guests pick up a pencil and start drawing on a notepad, playing badminton as a family or swimming in our pool is a good use of their downtime.
A stay at GlenMyu Estate as you explore the Sri Lankan Hill Country and see sights like Horton Plains National Park is a unique experience.
We only have three bedrooms and you will need to book early during the peak holiday season.
The estate is usually within an hours drive of the major sightseeing locations such as Nine Arch Bridge, Ella Town, Upper Diyaluma Waterfall, Lipton’s Seat, Bambarakanda Waterfall and many more,

Our cow got a friend.
Maali is excited as she finally has a friend at GlenMyu Estate to accompany her as she grazes at the 5 acre estate.
Read on to find out how this came about.
If you want to read about how Maali arrived at GlenMyu Estate please read our articles “We got a Cow” and also “The Cow, a year on (almost)”.
Maali was a little confused. She cleary was lonely and decided that her playmates were the dogs, ducks and chickens.
Maali would graze for the morning until mid afternoon and then we would let her free to room and forage.
Maali settled into GlenMyu Estate quite quickly. She was let free on the estate to forage and eat what she liked. Life is a learning curve and we realised that we would have to tie Maali to one spot for a few hours to concentrate on feeding in one area. She had a tendency to flit from one place to the other. Sometimes she would come bounding towards us when we were working on the land. It was funny, but sometimes scary and dangerous.
When we started to take her to forage in one part of the land she was quite stubborn and wouldn’t move. I used to play rugby in the front row so there was often a tug of war to get her to move to where we wanted her to go. Luckily I still have a bit ion technique and she hasn’t neaten me yet!
When Maali was released in the early afternoon she would run around like a crazy cow. The puppies would run after her and she would try to butt them with her small horns. This was the same for any ducks or chickens that she came across. We think that this was play rather than anger as she appeared to seek them out when she was loose.
She would bound around the land running more like a cheetah rather than a cow.
Although this did provide some entertainment, I was worried that she would create an accident either to her playmates or herself.
There needed to be a change at GlenMyu Estate.
We did a little bit of research and found that when cows are alone they sometimes develop bad behaviour. They are herd animals and really should be with other cows.
According to Farm House Guide “The truth is that cows are herd animals, and they need friends to help keep them happy and safe”.
We had known for some time that Maali really needed a friend.
Doesn’t the first one always get spoilt? Maali was certainly spoilt and given a lot a leeway at GlenMyu Estate.
Here she is waiting near the outside kitchen for a snack.
One of our neighbours has cows which are used to supply milk. One of his cows had a bull calf. His mother had been sick when he was born an he was not fully weaned on his mothers milk. This left him with a pot belly which is normal in these circumstances.
Another neighbour had told us that the owner of the bull calf was looking to sell him.
We asked him to get in contact with us.
After a discussion with the owner and the vet, Ru asked the bull calf to be brought along to meet Maali and see whether they would get along with each other.
Unfortunately, if we did not buy the calf, he would have been sent to the butcher. This is the normal outcome for these animals in Sri Lanka.
Ru met the calf when he was brought to the land to see whether Maali would accept him.
Both Maali and Ru made a connection straight away and there was only one choice.
He was going to have a new home at GlenMyu Estate.
We try to do our bit.
Unfortunately, we cannot save all the animals we would like to from the fate that this calf would have met.
We have limited space at GlenMyu Estate to allocate to the animals and being on a hill limits our capacity.
However, at least this animal will have a good life ahead of him.
We did not plan to have a second cow.
In early 2023 we had constructed a new home for Maali where she was now settled. We had not planned for two animals and there was “no room at the inn’ so to speak.
Therefore, we had to identify a suitable site for a home for two.
The land at GlenMyu Estate is bisected by a stream that runs through the middle of the land.
The stream runs alongside the swimming pool and forms a natural barrier for each side.
Maaili did some major damage to our flowers and other plants that she found tasty. We used to have a beautiful array of flowers alongside the lawn in front of the house.
Maali used these flowers as a buffet when she wanted some variety from the grass she normally eats. This has left our flowerbeds devastated and not looking very attractive!
The site is identified.
We decided that we would site the two cows in a new spot across the river. A gate would be placed at one side of the stream to protect the plants we have nearer the house.
This would result in the cows being focussed on one side of the land where we would be happy for them to forage.
Here are some videos we took of the big moment when Maali met her new friend.
Maali was not aware re at first but in the end she looks very happy.
You can see from this photo that Maali is making her acquaintance with her new friends.
The start looks good, let’s se if it continues and they become good friends and companions.
Our aim is to provide both Maali and her new friend a good, safe life at GlenMyu Estate.
In exchange we expect lots of manure to put on our organic garden.
Income we generate from guests staying at GlenMyu Estate when they are on holiday in Sri Lanka is the way we fund the costs to run the property.
By choosing GlenMyu Estate you will support what we do.
You will also have a great experience when you stay and explore the fantastic sights in the Sri Lankan Hill Country.
Your spend with us help fund the following:
Maali, our cow and her friend.
The cost of feeding and providing medication for our rescue dogs.

5 things I love about gardening.
From London banker to unpaid gardener in Sri Lanka.
The money is lousy but I wouldn’t change it for the world!
When I moved to Sri Lanka, I did not envisage ending up changing my office job for one outdoors.
A career banker, based in and around London, I had no idea where I would end up.
My destination was working for free on the 5 acre estate in Sri Lanka that we have developed into GlenMyu.
I had little experience as a gardener in London. Why would I when the only outside space was a small terrace? There was very little room to plant anything at all!
I had little idea also that I would end up having a love for gardening and don’t find it like work at all.
I get lost in my thoughts as I use my brush cutter keeping the pathways and lawn in good shape.
It’s amazing how calming and relaxing it is. I do make sure that I am alert enough not to have an accident though, so it’s not like I’m in a trance.
Maybe the hum from my brush cutter through the ear plugs I use gives a sense of comfort.
Trying to get the grass as even I as I can do, on the hill country slopes, is my continuous focus.
I don’t practice meditation, however, this is the closest I get. I love it!
I take a lot of pride in my work and try to make the grounds as attractive as possible.
When guests say that the garden looks good, I feel good. Actually I feel great. It makes all my efforts worth it.
I say my efforts, however there is a team at GlenMyu Estate who all contribute to making the garden look good.
Ru is the designer of the garden (and most things) at GlenMyu Estate. Some of our daily workers are so adept at using the besom to sweep up the grass cuttings and leaves, I could never be as efficient or fast.
Doesn’t everyone like a pat on the back for the work that they have done?.
One of our aims at GlenMyu Estate is to restore the land from an abandoned tea estate to a home for wildlife. Encouraging biodiversity on the land which makes it a healthy place for plants and animals to visit and live.
GlenMyu Estate was part of a larger abandoned tea estate prior to being bought by my wife. It had also been a sugar cane estate which had failed when the government started to import sugar cane.
Over the years the land was overrun by Guinea Grass which was brought in during Colonial times as a fast growing cattle feed. This fast growing plant takes th light and nutrients from the endemic plants of Sri Lanka and dominates the landscape. It is not a good environment to welcome biodiversity.
We have slowly removed the Guinea Grass over the years and replaced the plants with a fruit forest to feed us and the animals. Hundreds of endemic species have been planted and are starting to establish themselves on the five acre estate.
We regularly see dragon flies during the day, a variety of butterflies and some fireflies at night. This, we understand, shows that the land is healthy.
There are no chemicals or pesticides used at the estate and everything that we grow is organic.
It’s a pleasure walking around the garden on attractive paths and weed free borders.
The order calms the mind and allows me to concentrate on the nature that surrounds me.
Listening to the birdsong, watching the parrots flit from tree to tree and the Kingfisher fish in our stream.
The sound of the water softening any vehicle noise, the feel of the ground on my bare feet and playing with the dogs on the lawn.
One of the best things about GlenMyu Estate is our swimming pool.
The pool is fed by a natural spring and the only heating is from the daytime sun.
We don’t add chlorine to the water so I swim in a completely natural environment.
An evening swim is refreshing and eases the muscles that I have used during the day.
Finishing off the evening with a well deserved bottle of local Lion lager beer puts icing on the cake!
I sometimes have to chase the Eagles when it perches on branch eyeing our chickens and ducks.
Moving on the monkeys when they are trying to eat our Jackfruits, Mangos and Avocados when they are in season (don’t worry there is plenty for them to eat on the periphery of the estate).
There are lots that I love about gardening at GlenMyu Estate.
I don’t just cut the lawns and paths around the estate in my gardening duties.
Cutting and replanting coleus, cutting down fallen branches and general weeding is all part of my day in the garden.
It’s great to get variety in my day.

Ru and I have been talking about this for some time.
It is something that we really feel that is needed as an addition to GlenMyu Estate.
Hopefully, you will be as pleased as we are when you see what we are going to add to the estate.
We know that at least one of the family at GlenMyu Estate is going to be so pleased and happy.
The news will be announced as soon as we are in a position to do so.
In the meantime we will leave it to your imagination.
Perhaps you can guess what is coming to GlenMyu Estate before we reveal it?

What do monkeys like to do? At GlenMyu Estate we have two species of monkeys that regularly visit us. Toque macaques are endemic to the island and can often be seen in our trees eating leaves and fruits when available. Tufted grey langurs also can be seen in the trees and sometimes on the ground when the youngsters play and the adult try to steal our crops.
My morning at GlenMyu Estate is quite varied during the year and a little different compared to London when I was on that hamster wheel. Life has certainly changed moving from a city with a population of ten million plus to a five acre estate with a population of eight people.
My morning view has changed as well. In our London flat we would look over the railway track hosting the Bakerloo line and London Overground. Now we look over the rolling hills that lead towards the South coast of Sri Lanka. The sound of the stream that runs along the boundary of the estate and the morning birdsong is my background music. It’s such a contrast to the city.
Quite often there are some monkeys that like to sit on the elderly Lunumidella Tree that is in front of the house. I regularly take photos and videos of these animals enjoying their time on this precipice. They eat the leaves leaving the tree branches somewhat bare. Picking fleas from their fur is a regular pastime. Shaking the tree branch is also a regular event and I still don’t know the reason for this. When there is a family temporarily inhabiting the tree the kids can race around and make it a place of play. I like it when the monkeys just sit, chill and enjoy the view. This is a reflection of what I believe that this paradise island should be all about.
Sit, relax and enjoy the view. Get closer to nature. Take a deep breath off the fresh air. Forget about all the stresses, troubles and strife and enjoy the world.
This morning I watched a pair of monkeys on tree. The sun was out and they were grooming themselves before they started their day. The younger of the two did shake the tree for a while which brought a smile to my face. They weren’t there for long but the relaxed feeling that they emitted had already been transferred to me.
As I write, the monkeys have left the tree and they have been replaced by a pair of Bulbuls with their Mohican haircuts. They are not the most attractive birds given their aggressive hairstyle. The background has changed as the mist has come in and the sun is hiding behind the clouds.
The change from light to dark should depress my mood however I have the photos and videos of the monkeys in the sun to lift my spirits and keep a smile on my face.
Get closer to nature by spending some time on holiday ay GlenMyu Estate. You can find out more details are our website on the following link.

Is this my favourite place? I often think where is my favourite place to live? At this time in my life, it is the Sri Lankan Hill Country.
I think that my feelings about places have changed over the years. There clearly was a right time and right place at different times of my life.
When I was young I spent my secondary school education at a boarding school on a 64 acre estate in the Suffolk Countryside. I loved it there. Spending the time with my school friends, playing rugby with my teammates and enjoying the grounds was a far cry from Brixton, South London.
Starting in Banking in Mayfair (the most expensive property on the Monopoly board!) was a great place to start my career. Unfortunately I did have to commute, so it wasn’t ideal.
Working in Kilburn and being able to walk to the office was a joy. The vibe in the area as it was slowly becoming gentrified was an interesting time in my life.
London’s pace and energy was a great place to live in my mid twenties until my mid forties. I used as many of the elements that this city offers (within my budget). The atmosphere in the pubs, bars, restaurants and nightclubs were just what I wanted at that period. London emits a power that inspires and creates art, music and fashion. It was a pomace that I felt comfortable and proud to live during that time.
Moving to Sri Lanka at fifty was a deliberate choice to slow down the pace of life and get some time back. Living in Colombo initially was enjoyable. My early morning walk along the walking tracks that abut Parliament was a healthy start to the day. The smiles and relationships that we started to build with the people we met on our walk or in the neighbourhood gave us a good felling of community.
As I got older the realisation that family, friends, people and community are a major part of what makes living in a place more enjoyable and brings elements of happiness.
My favourite place at this time in my life is GlenMyu Estate and the Sri Lankan Hill Country.
Great people make this my favourite place.
We are so fortunate to have great neighbours that have a similar outlook on life. They go through the same trials and tribulations that we go through living in the hills means that we have empathy for each other. The fact that most have travelled widely, have lived interesting lives and enjoy good food and drink are a bonus.
We get to meet people
Starting GlenMyu Estate and inviting guests into our house was quite daunting at first. We were not hoteliers and would it work. Both my wife and I had lived on our own together in North West London for many years, so how would we manage with strangers coming in and out of the house?
Well, it worked out great and we love it.
We live on the top floor of the house and have a separate entrance which gives guests their separate space.
Meeting new guests exploring this paradise island adds so much colour to our lives. We really enjoy getting to know our guests, finding out about their lives and where they live. As our guests are on holiday and they have enjoyed their tour around the country spirits are positive and high.
Having people to stay with us is one of the most enjoyable parts of living here and the main reason that it is my favourite place.
The estate keeps us busy
With fives acres to maintain and look after we are always busy. There is always something to do, Lawns and pathways need cut, shrubs and trees need pruning and trees, flowers and vegetables need planting.
We are continually developing the estate to improve it for ourselves and our guests. The development of our version of Lombard Street is taking longer than I wanted. Our circular pathway around the border of the estate needs completed. We always have new ideas on what we want to do and the work needs to be planned between guests and seasons.
We wait for the rainy season to start and clear areas in readiness for planting. The rain doesn’t come and we can’t plant what we planned.
There are great places to visit nearby
We love living at GlenMyu Estate because it is close enough to so many great places to visit. A day trip to Ella to see Nine Arch Bridge, Ravana Waterfall or people watch from a bar in the high street. Visiting the UNESCO heritage site Horton Plains became one of our favourite places to go when we first started living here. Being in the Montane Cloud Forest and enjoying the eleven kilometre hike makes life interesting and makes you feel good.
Finding Upper Diyaluma Waterfall when accompanying a German couple on their trip was a wonderful find. We feel that we were lucky to visit the second tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka before it gets too busy with tourist.
Seeing the views from Lipton’s Seat, Haputale looking over the manicured tea estates are also an enjoyable experience. There are so many other places to see and visit nearby, like the stages of the new Pekoe Trail and we never have enough time to go as regularly as we would like to.
Never a dull moment
Whether it’s the animals, the weather or our staff’s stories, there is never a dull moment for us at GlenMyu Estate. We have a crazy cow who keeps us entertained. Ru is regularly nursing one of the chickens who may be under the weather. We can be searching for a duck who has decided to nest in a dangerous location as the nigh falls. Some of our dogs are needy and refuse to let me get on with my work unless I spend time petting them.
So GlenMyu Estate and the Sri Lankan Hill Country is my favourite place at the moment. I love it when guests stay and enjoy their time here so much. The reviews that they leave make both Ru and I feel great and it gives us inspiration to work hard and provide our guests with the best experience.
We hope that this also becomes their favourite place also.

The cow – a year on – well almost! Here is an update on our cow Maali who has lived at GlenMyu Estate since December 2022. .
If you have read our previous article “We got a cow!”, then perhaps you will be interested in an update on how we have got on so far.
After my initial hesitation and worry about having a cow on the estate, Maali is now ensconced into our family at GlenMyu Estate. Maali is very comfortable living on the estate and her character has really developed since December 2022.
All the other animals are used to Maali going about her business although the dogs still make a fuss when she comes back from her day grazing.
Some of the issue with the dogs have been brought about by Maali herself. We think that, as she is a herd animal, she really needs some company of her own.
Her substitute for a friend appears to be chasing the dogs, chickens and ducks when she is let loose. Of course, this winds up the dogs who are happy to play. I must admit that I do laugh when some of our more recent puppies grab hold of her rope and pull it as Maali walks back towards her enclosure to see if any food has been left for her by the chickens.
She is a real character and quite determined in what she wants to do.
Sometimes it takes a bit of encouragement to get her to do what you want. It’s as if she is a petulant child!
In the morning, Maali sometimes decides that she wants to be taken to a different part of the estate to graze. She stops dead and refuses to move!
It takes some effort to get her on her way again. Fortunately years playing rugby in the front row means that I have technique that can even move a bast of this tonnage. A tug of war ensues and after a while Maali realises that she is on the move.
I am trying to lose a bit of weight and perhaps in the future Maali will win this battle. But for now it’s an unexpected addition to my strength exercises when she decides to be stubborn!
Maali features in our Instagram, YouTube and Facebook photos and videos every so often. Many of our guests know about Maali before they come and are keen to meet her. We had two Indian Lawyers stay with us and as soon as they got out of the car they were looking for Maali. Several of our guests grew up in the country or on a family farm and like that there is cow on the estate. I guess that it brings back memories and is a comforting feeling.
Over the past ten months we have learned that we can’t allow Maali to roam free. Evidence of this is that we used to have a nice border of flowers and plants on the border of the lawn. Maali decided that this was a delicious buffet and therefore we no longer have beautiful flowers at the edge of the lawn!
We now tend to tie her in one area in the mornings so she can work on one particular area of grass and plants. Later on, once she is quite full, we release her to roam around the land (watching that she doesn’t eat any more flowers!).
One day my wife an I were in Colombo picking up some supplies for GlenMyu Estate and we received a phone call from a neighbour asking whether our cow was at the estate. We were confident that she was but decided to check with one of the staff.
He was confident as well …..until he had a look at the area he thought she was. Of course, she wasn’t there and had escaped.
Fortunately she was returned to us by our neighbour.
We have fencing around GlenMyu Estate so we were perplexed on how Maali had escaped. It turned out that the gate that the staff use was left open and Maali found her escape!
Now the staff ensure that the gate is closed!
Maali started developing lumps on her skin and started losing weight. A home visit by the vet diagnosed the problem as “Lump Skin Disease”. The vet gave her an injection and told us that there was not medicine in Sri Lanka to treat the problem. However there was hope that may get through this and survive, but no guarantee.
We were extremely worried. A search on the internet didn’t help (which can often happen).
Fortunately we have some good friends that suggested that we try to treat Maali with a herbal remedy and they gave us the recipe to the potion.
Maali didn’t look great for several days and her appetite was low. Her favourite foods of Jackfruit and Bananas were of little or no interest. She was mainly kept indoors during this period as it was a colder and wetter part of the year and we needed to keep her warm. We continued with the medication over a few weeks and we were delighted to see that Maali started to want to eat again.
My wife and I had an important trip back to the UK when Maali was recovering and we were still unsure that she would make it. Daily updates were provided by Ruwanthi’s mother or the staff. She was continuing to make progress with the medication and the food that we brought in for her.
Whilst we were away she had been showing that she wanted to go outside and start grazing again.
We returned to Sri Lanka in the later part of October and we were really pleased to see that Maali had put on a fair bit of weight. She had some open wounds, as a result of the disease which were continuously being treated
A few days after we returned Maali was let out to graze for part of the day. She has put on weight and really looks so good compared to when we left for the UK.
Her character is coming back and she is now harassing the dogs again. Maali has not fully recovered however we have confidence that she will be back to her old self soon
Maali is now accepting guests. Our most recent visitors have two delightful daughters who helped Ruwanthi feed Maali some bananas as soon as they got out of the car.
Being the petulant child, she of course didn’t eat them and I have no doubt that they will be saved for later for an evening snack without onlookers!

I often wonder how did seven become ten?
My maximum was seven, and even that was too much.
With only two pairs of hands, I couldn’t even close with the attention that the seven required and demanded.
I was almost in tears when I realised that the additional three were not moving on and they were here to stay.
So, how did we get to ten?
My anguish was as a result of the increase in the number of rescue dogs from seven up to ten.
We really didn’t plan to have any dogs.
When we started the construction at GlenMyu Estate we stayed with a neighbours bed and breakfast around a kilometre from the land.
During that time we got our contractor to build a one bedroom unit at the entrance to the land. This property was going to turn into staff or drivers accommodation.
Our neighbour had several dogs and we got to know them as we stayed there several times. They were friendly and happy to see us.
The neighbour decided that we needed a dog for our property (no consultation needed in Sri Lanka of course). All of a sudden Sudhu was a resident at our neighbours. Sudhu was a white coloured puppy and was lots of fun. Lots of dogs in Sri Lanka are called Sudhu, which means white. Basic, but it does the job!
You can read our article about our initial experience with our dogs “Our Rescue Dogs – making GlenMyu Estate a special place”.
We had got to a number of seven dogs and at that time I said we could not have any more at GlenMyu Estate. The estate is five acres in size and could accommodate more dogs, but I felt I could not commit the time and love to any more. When you only have two hands and you have three, four, five, six or seven dogs looking for attention, the equation doesn’t work.
Clove – our first dog
Roti – Clove’s son
Kahlu and Donie
Patch and Biscuit – Kahlu and Donies’ off-spring.
Fleur – the fluffy one.
Clove – our first dog.
Roti – Clove’s son
Kahlu – Superdaddy
Donie The supermum
Patch – a chip of the block.
Biscuit – Patch’s crazy sister
Fleur – the fluffy one.
They didn’t quite live in harmony, like many families, and squabbled from time to time. However, they were mainly harmonious and got used to meeting guests. Fleur was particularly affectionate and was able to win our guests hearts very quickly.
I managed to share my time with them throughout the day. In the morning I would be bombarded by four or five of them who were excited to see me. Kahlu wanted to be brushed and petted all day and would have insisted if I had the time. Biscuit was the one that waited to find me on my own later in the day so she could have me all to herself.
Unfortunately, Fleur went missing on my birthday the year before last. We were heartbroken and sent out search parties for him. I drove for miles looking for him just in case he got lost. We printed leaflets and posted them where we could. Social media posts were created and we searched the internet for him. We had several false alarms and drove to places where he was sighted. It turns out that. Although we thought the Fleur was unique, there are lots of doubles of him.
We don’t know whether he met with an accident or was picked up by someone. He may have gotten lost and not found his way back home. We prayed that he was alive and being taken care of by someone who would love him as much as we do.
When we drive anywhere we are still looking for Fleur and hope that we can find him.
At the end of the day, we had to face the fact, we now had six dogs.
A smelly, dirty, starving dog with no hair attempted several time to come into the property. The dog was chased away again and again by the resident pack. We were made aware of the dog by our staff and some food was placed outside the gate for it to eat.
It was raining and this poor creature tried again to enter the property for some shelter and was chased by our dogs. Ru decided to take the poor thing into our old cow barn and give it some shelter and some food. It was bathed and you could see she was in so much pain as she had severe mange which left her with very little hair. She was installed into a box with a blanket and slept for days occasionally coming out for one sustenance. A mange cream was bought and applied and we tried to make her more comfortable.
An antibacterial solution was also applied which painted the skin and remaining hair a mauve colour. One of our guests, who helped treating her, suggested that we call her Mauve. Unfortunately Mauve sounds too much like Clove which was too confusing. So the name was changed to Mo Mo.
Unfortunately, at that time, Sri Lanka was suffering from an economic crisis and we could not find any more mange cream to continue to treat the dog. We reached out to vets and animal shelters however they were all in the same predicament.
Ru searched online and made up a herbal medication from what we could find that was growing on the estate. Unsure whether this would be effective we were concerned that Mo Mo would make it.
The herbal remedy worked for a while and Mo Mo deteriorated again. We were able to take her to the vet for examination as we finally had enough fuel for the car. Injections were given and various other treatments.
We were delighted that the treatment made the difference and the pain subsided and Mo Mo’s hair started to grow back again.
Clearly, it was unlikely that someone would take on a sick dog that needed treatment so we accepted that Mo Mo was here to stay.
Our hearts were broken again when Kahlu went missing.
When we first got to know Kahlu he was quite aggressive and clearly the dominant male in the pack. He was a fighter (particularly when female dogs were in heat) and would come back to the estate with all kinds of wounds which Ru treated.
After getting permission from his original owner, we arranged to get Kahlu neutered.
The affect of this was amazing. Kahlu changed from a scary dominant male into a pussy cat. He was so cuddly and just wanted petting all the time. There were no more fights and he really became a home dog just making a daily trip to visit his previous owner.
Kahlu still had an appetite and always was around for his breakfast or dinner.
One day he didn’t turn up.
We waited and then looked for him. I drove around to see whether he had met with an accident. We asked our neighbours whether they has caught sight of him. Several days passed and we still had hope that Kahlu would return. I missed him a lot.
A few weeks later we were in a bank in Haputale and one of our neighbours told us that Kahlu had died. He had eaten some poison left at a trap and succumbed. He had found him and another dog who had met the same fate some days after they had died and he buried them both.
I was quite upset for several days but, unlike Fleurs’s fate, we knew how Kahlu had died. At least there was some finality.
How on earth did you manage to get up to ten?
In the middle of the night we had a break in. Not a burglar, but a little black stray dog. It managed to enter our dog house (which is abandoned by our dogs in the warmer weather).
In the morning there was a big fuss around the dog house with this little puppy barking at the older dogs that had now seen the intruder. She held her ground and wouldn’t let any of the other dogs in!
Like all the other strays, we fed, cleaned and gave the puppy medicine to make her stronger before she could be re-homed. A visit to the vet revealed that she was anaemic and needed treatment. Injections and medicine was given and we knew that this would be a long road.
At the time we had a French Moroccan guest staying called Lamaiaa. She spent a little time with this puppy and requested that she be named after her. As her name didn’t sound phonetically like the other dogs the name was given.
The requirement for ongoing treatment to get Lamaiaa healthy meant that this was another dog that could not be re-homed. So, we were up to seven dogs again.
We had some guests stay with us a GlenMyu Estate who came across three abandoned puppies on their travels. After some messages going back and forth to ensure that they were abandoned we agreed for them to bring them to us. Later that day there was quite a downpour and they were stuck in a drain. Perhaps if we hadn’t said we would take them in they would not have survived.
At this stage we were happy to take in a few puppies because we had always been successful in finding them new homes.
The puppies were cute, needing worming and a good bath. They had a little skin infection and a few days later we took them to the vet for treatment.
They were attractive enough that we thought that when they were strong enough and had their vaccinations that there would be a queue of people wanting them.
Unfortunately we were wrong in our assumption.
It turned our that the financial crisis meant that there were a glut of puppies that were in need of new homes. We advertised on social media however, unfortunately, there were no genuine takers.
One neighbour did take one of the puppies, but it found its’ way back to the estate later that day. We had no chance of re-homing these puppies unless they were relocated far from GlenMyu Estate.
I could have cried!
Ten dogs! Really!
How would we manage? Where would they stay? Would they integrate with the existing pack?
It took may several days to come to accept that we now had seven dogs. I’m still not happy with the situation but there was no point dwelling on the matter.
So, this is how seven became ten!
I am adamant that we will now not be taking in any more puppies under any circumstances. More puppies are for Ruwanthi’s next project which will be an animal sanctuary. At the moment it is just a dream for her. However, GlenMyu Estate was also a dream and she successfully achieved her goal.
The puppies are now around eight months old, have been spayed (no more puppies!) and have made GlenMyu Estate their home.
They are puppies, so they are naughty, have eaten too many shoes and annoy the other dogs from time to time. It will take some more months before they are fully part of the team.
Of course, they are cute. They are also characters and have provided me with some content for my YouTube dog channel. The guests love them, but who doesn’t love a cute puppy.
Lipton
Sunny
Bobbi
Our contingent now comprises of the following:

Both India and Sri Lanka have cultures of living in harmony with nature. In addition to providing an excellent experience for our guests, living and being closer with nature is one of our main aims at GlenMyu Estate.
In an article from the Hindustan Times (Oct 1st 2020) it was reported that Prakesh Javadekar, when delivering a speech at the Biodiversity Summit at the UN, stated that “India has a culture of harmony living with nature”.
He states that “Since time immemorial, India has a culture of not just conserving and protecting nature, but living in harmony with it”.
He added “As enshrined in our Vedic scripts ‘Prakriti Rakshati Rakshita’ that is if you protect nature, nature will protect you” .
Tree cover had been significantly increased and animals had been protected.
Mr Javedekar held the post of Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change at that date.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India aims to restore 26 million hectares of degraded and deforested land and achieve land-degradation neutrality by 2030.
If these targets can be achieved they must be applauded.
On a smaller scale there are people and organisations in Sri Lanka working towards restoring environments for nature to thrive and for lands to be restored. Of course not everyone sings on the same hymn sheet and there are huge challenges to make a significant difference.
There is always going to be a battle between conservation and development. We know what side we favour.
Hopefully, a combination of individual effort, awareness and education will encourage others to follow suit.
The concern about Global Warming and the extreme weather and catastrophes we have seen around the planet in recent years means a change in focus is both critical and urgent.
GlenMyu Estate was formerly part of the much larger Viharagalla Estate. When Ru purchased the land it had been a tea estate and then a sugar cane estate. We understand that the product of sugar cane became unviable and it was abandoned.
There was apparently lots of prospective buyers that looked at the land over the years but did not think it was worth purchasing.
Ru made a brave decision to purchase the 5 acres which was mainly inhabited by Guinea Grass which is used as quick growing cow fodder. There were various trees spread around the land but the Guinness grass was the main resident.
Initially Ru wanted to build a holiday home for herself and the family to use. It was only whilst cleaning selected areas that the land started to reveal what it could become. There were lots of ideas and decisions made and changed before the site for the holiday home would be placed.
We were fortunate to meet our neighbours, some of wheat been developing their own properties with a view to living with nature. One neighbour has developed a diverse forest over the last thirty years and that were able to give us advice about what to plant and what works in this area. They also provided us with saplings and alerted us to SALT (Sloping Agriculture Land Technology) to secure the slopes and retain our valuable topsoil.
Another neighbour developed an Analog Forest over thirty plus years at Belipola which is around thirty kilometres from GlenMyu Estate. They have developed training programs so that others can follow their example.
Dr Ranil Senanayake gave us great advice on what to plant to encourage the return of wildlife to the land. He was also able to identify what creatures were already residing at the property.
As the house developed into a larger property than we planned and we also particularly liked the climate here, our plan for GlenMyu Estate changed.
We decided in order to live with nature we would not overdevelop the land and provide a habitat for animal life whilst operating a hotel which could fund the development and maintenance of the estate. The land would become a place where guests could come and reconnect with nature. We realised that having lived in a city for many years that we were detached from nature. The development of GlenMyu Estate would allow us and our guests to reconnect.
Providing food and and a safe habitat for animals became part of the plan. The creation of a food forest on the land, the produce of which would be used to feed ourselves, our guests and the animals.
You will see when you visit GlenMyu Estate that we have planted Jackfruit trees, Mango Trees, Avocado Trees and many other food trees and plants. They are at a distance from the house where we will not be able to harvest the crop and therefore they will be food for the birds, animals and insects that are part of the local biodiversity settles on the land.
We do not use any chemicals or pesticides on the land at GlenMyu Estate. Although we do not have certification (as we feel there is no need) you can see from some of the insects that visit the land that we are not using chemicals. We have various, beautiful, dragon flies and in the evenings you will most likely see fireflies lighting up the night sky.
Dragonflies are a good indicator of a clean environment according to a Earthbuddies in their article “Dragonfly, The Environmentally Important Fairy-Like Insect“.
Springer state that “A major cause of the decline (in the number of Dragonflies) has been suggested to be the use of systemic insecticides” in their article “Chlorantraniliprole application differentially affects adult emergence of Sympetrum dragonflies in rice paddy fields”.
Have we managed to live with nature?
We have found the the development of the five acres at GlenMyu Estate will always be work in progress rather than something that it completed.
Working with nature means that you will not always plant the right tree in the perfect place for it. A porcupine may visit the land during the night and dig up and destroy some of your work. The unpredictable weather patterns have meant that we were unable to plant saplings when we had planned to. We have realised that you should work with the environment rather than push it. This means that we have to be patient.
Since starting the hotel we have had to take some staff away from working on the land so that they can service our guests.
In summary, we have made a lot of progress and are happy with where we are in our plan, but there is always more to do.
It is a challenge getting the balance right between living with nature and generating income from the hotel. Historically the period between mid December and Mid April has been the peak tourist season in Sri Lanka. During these months our main focus is to provide the best experience for our guests. It is a drier part of the year and therefore not the time to plant around the estate.
As the number of tourists visiting the island reduce and there is more rain we change our main focus towards planting and developing our food forest.
Sri Lanka Tourism has an ambitious target to increase the tourist numbers to seven million by 2030. This is a huge increase from the target of 1.55 million for 2023.
We have seen an increase in tourist numbers outside the normal tourist season.
Sri Lanka is actually an all year round destination as visiting the East Coast and Jaffna is from April to December when the South West Monsoon hits the country.
The beaches on the east side of the country are beautiful and have a different feeling than those on the south and west coasts.
Our guests really enjoy their stay at GlenMyu Estate and especially when Ru takes them around the garden. Reconnecting with nature and getting to know where a large part of the food that they will eat whilst they are here is a joy. Knowing that you are going to eat organic healthy food that has been picked from the garden provides a sense of wellbeing.
We can see that when our guests get closer to nature it really is good for their mind body and soul.
I was reading about the idea behind the Scandinavian word “friluftsliv” and the love of the outdoors and feel that we have inadvertently created this environment for our visitors.
If you want to read about what our guests say about their stay at GlenMyu Estate please read our reviews on Booking.com, Airbnb, TripAdvisor and Google.
We have provided comfortable bedrooms and lounges with spectacular views of the Sri Lankan countryside at GlenMyu Estate. Space to roam and a Natural Spring Fed Swimming Pool to get some exercise surrounded by a sea of green allows you to immerse in nature.
Lots of our guests explore the fabulous sights within an hours drive from the estate. However, many change their plans and stay the whole day at the estate rather than battle with the other tourists to see Nine Arch Bridge.
We love it when guests stay at the estate as it is a reflection of what we have created.
GlenMyu Estate is still a work in progress – and nature will mean that it always will be. We hope that guests that stay with us now will return again and again to see the trees and plants grow and change the landscape. Several of our guests have planted Lemon Trees, Avocado Trees and other species. This allows our guests to be part of the development of the estate.

We have social media channels where you can remotely see what we are doing at the estate.

When we initially opened GlenMyu Estate Hotel, in the Sri Lankan Hill Country, we were concerned that having dogs would be detrimental to the business. What we have found though is that there are animal lovers from all parts of Sri Lanka and the World
The animals that we have at GlenMyu Estate have really added to the guest experience. We have been amazed that one of the reasons that guests have chosen us is because we have our rescue dogs.
All of our dogs are vaccinated and are also used to greeting new guests on a regular basis. Sometimes I feel sorry for the dogs (and guests) because I can see how quickly a relationship and friendship is developed, only to be broken when the guests leave to discover more parts of this paradise island.
We have had a few guests come that are not too keen on dogs. However, I don’t know how the dogs manage it, but they are able to forge a relationship really quickly. We recently had a family stay and the mother didn’t want the attention from the dogs unlike the rest of her family. A few hours later she was cuddling one of our abandoned puppies and didn’t want to let her go!
There was also a Sri Lankan family comprising of Mum, Dad and three delightful daughters. The girls were pinned close to their mother when the alighted the car and were met by several excited dogs. Within an hour they were playing with the dogs and there were tears in the morning when the left as the youngest wanted to take one home with them!
Early on we had a French family living in Colombo stay at GlenMyu Estate. The parents and their two young daughters really loved their time here and picked out their own favourite dogs.
On their second visit their mother told us that we were known as “the house with the seven dogs” and that they had remembered all their names!
Over the few years we have been at GlenMyu Estate we have had puppies from time to time.
As spaying a neutering dogs in Sri Lanka is not the norm there are lots of unwanted puppies that turn up throughout the year.
Sri Lankans are animal lovers however we do wish that a sterilisation programme was enacted by the government to control the population.
We have lots of tourists arrive and comment on the number and poor condition of the street dogs that they have seen around the island.
There are charities and organisations that do their best to help, treat and care for the street dogs. However, the challenge is huge and overwhelming. We just do our best to care for these animals at GlenMyu Estate. After providing them with them with a good start in life with a good diet, additional vitamins and the relevant vaccinations we try to re-home them with loving families.
Both Ru and I had been around dogs and animals all of our lives through each of our parents who had dogs, cats and so on. However, we had never had the full responsibility of the animals ourselves. Living in London in a small apartment, working long hours and travelling meant that it was not feasible to have a pet. We were so busy that it was not even a consideration.
Ru’s dream was always to have an organic farm up in the mountains with her own animals. I suppose that the original intention was to have farm animals that we functional on a farm. However, the focus has changed since we have been in Sri Lanka and the main driver is being animal lovers providing a good safe environment rather than seeing their role as part of farming.
There is so much to enjoy about a stay in the Sri Lankan Hill Country at GlenMyu Estate. Sri Lanka’s Hill country offers lots of wonderful places to see and visit. Ella Town is around one hours drive and lots of our guests visit Nine Arch Bridge, climb Ella Rock and Little Adam’s Peak. They also visit Ravana Waterfall and Ravana’s Cave.
Hiking at then UNESCO Heritage site of Horton Plains National Park and seeing the spectacular views at Lesser World’s End, Greater World’s End and the beautiful Baker’s Falls is a favourite.
Upper Diyaluma Waterfall is a relatively new discovery for us and as it is only a 40 minute drive it is now one of the most popular day trips. A visit to Lipton’s Seat and seeing how tea is processed at Dambetenne Tea Factory is also a great experience.
After exploring the area coming back to the five acre estate and being welcomed by the dogs adds to your holiday memories.
We also have a rescue cow called Maali. She has been a resident at the estate since December 2022 and adds to the landscape. Maali provides us with manure for our organic garden and grass around the estate. She is interested to meet new guests and give them a sniff and perhaps even a lick with her coarse tongue!
You will see lots of ducks wandering around the estate foraging for food and then bathing in the streams that run through the land. They are a perfect way to lose some hours watching them go about their daily lives. We find them very relaxing (apart from when they are mating!) and it is our form of meditation.
Our chickens and roosters also wander around the estate looking for tasty things to eat. We do keep them in an enclosure for part of the day to protect them from predators such as the mongoose and eagles.
Here are some of our dogs that will be happy to meet you!
Our ducks provide a relaxing experience at the estate.
Apart from the animals that we care for at GlenMyu Estate there are lots of visitors, some you will see and some are hidden. Occasionally you may see a Barking Deer in the distance eating leaves and fresh grass. You are unlikely to see a porcupine or Wild Boar as they tend to come in the middle of the night, however you may see the damage that they do to our crops.
There are a variety of birds that visit the estate daily and seasonally. We have a bird book to help you identify what you see whilst you are here.
We also have lots of squirrels and occasionally a beautiful Giant Squirrel eating our Jackfruits on the tree.

We are also listed on Airbnb and Booking.com.
If you are particularly interested in the dogs we have a separate YouTube Channel.

Since we moved to the Sri Lankan Hill Country we have adopted many rescue dogs at GlenMyu Estate. Some have been kept on the 5 acre estate, some have been re-homed and unfortunately we expect to have to continue to do this work.
We try to give these orphans a good start in life by providing them with nutritious food, added vitamins & minerals and the necessary vaccinations to protect them against diseases.
It was not part of our plan and we did not really expect to have dogs on the estate. We thought that it might deter some people from booking a stay with us in the Hill Country.
A few people have booked and cancelled when they find out that we have dogs – which is fine with us. We would not want anyone to feel uncomfortable staying here at GlenMyu Estate.
We have however, been surprised that, often the dogs are the star of the show. Our welcome message includes a small commentary about the dogs and we have had lots of people really excited about meeting them.
As it is a little dangerous interacting with dogs in Sri Lanka due to the risk of rabies, guests are delighted that they are able to pet the animals at GlenMyu Estate. They know that the dogs are all vaccinated and there will be no issues.
Also, our dogs are so used to meeting new guests sometimes they are quite blasé about the situation. We find that when the vehicle carrying our guest arrive they just want to have a sniff and then they get on with their daily lives. If however, guests make a fuss of them, they know that the guests are dog lovers and that they will get plenty of attention when they are here.
Here is Donie with Patch and Fleur in the background.
Patch is Donie’s son and was born at GlenMyu Estate.
Donie (and Kahlu) were owned by the caretaker to the construction company who built the main structure and roadway into GlenMyu Estate. The contractors were here for about one and a half years and both Donie (and Kahlu) were supposed to go with their owner onto the next site.
Donie had a litter whilst living at GlenMyu Estate and her son and daughter, Patch and Biscuit, survived.
We decided that we would keep Patch and Biscuit as we brought them up on the estate and it was their home.
The caretaker was happy for Donie to stay and Kahlu was to go with the contractors to the next construction site…..however….(read about Kahlu’s story here).
Patch and Biscuit have different colourings however, they certainly act like brother and sister.
Like most siblings, sometimes they get on well together and sometimes they don’t. Patch acts like a guardian to both Donie and Biscuit and will run and protect them if there is any disturbance.
However, Patch has a large appetite (being the boy!) and he will try to take food off Donie or Biscuit once he has gobbled up his breakfast or lunch. Motherly Donie is happy to share her food but Biscuit will snarl at him warning him to keep away.
Donie is a great mother and she still, after almost 4 years, cleans Patch’s eyes and ears almost on a daily basis. Sometimes Patch looks a little embarrassed when this happens, however we have also seen him offer his ears and eyes to his mother to clean!
We have realised that when you give a puppy a really good start in life, giving them a wholesome diet supplemented by vitamins and minerals, that they will be very healthy. In turn this appears to have made Clove very productive when it came to having her first litter. Fro our discussions with neighbours they would expect a litter of perhaps three, four or five.
Can you imagine our horror when Clove had her litter and produced nine puppies over a very long night.
Unfortunately two of the puppies did not survive the next day and we were left with seven healthy and hungry little ones.
I think of GlenMyu Estate as more of a social enterprise than a “proper” business. By opening the house and grounds to paying guests we certainly benefit by being able to live in a nice environment whilst meeting really interesting people.
By holidaying at GlenMyu Estate you also support the staff that we have by effectively contributing to their wages so that they can support their families.
You also are providing money so that we can support the work we do with rescue dogs, providing them with a good start in life prior to being rehoused into loving homes,
We have lost count of the number of abandoned puppies that we have taken in that have been dropped close to our gate or brought to us by our staff.
At the Estate we have decided that we can only have a maximum of seven dogs. This is still too many however we got to seven and decided that must be the limit. The puppies that we take in are given a good healthy start and then we make sure that they go to good, loving homes.
We ensure that the puppies get all the relevant vaccinations and also have committed to pay for neutering and spaying in the future if the owner wants to go down that route and doesn’t have the funds to meet the costs.
In conjunction with a local vet we have also supported the funding of sterilisation of dogs owned by poor villagers who cannot afford to pay the vet bills.
We support these costs due to, as you will see from your travels around this Paradise Island, that there are too many street dogs that are in really poor conditions. By reducing the number of litters. Most females can have litters two or three times a year. Even if a mother has three puppies twice a year the number of dogs increases by six, so you can understand the problem if there is no control.

Rescue Dogs of GlenMyu Estate Read More »
We have seven rescue dogs here at GlenMyu Estate.
Dogs were not in our plan!
Ruwanthi and I didn’t intend to have any dogs, they just found us.
We ended up with Seven!
How we ended up here.
In 2018 we were living in our temporary abode whilst we develop the land at Beragala in our “Garage” at the top part of the land – a 1,000 sq ft building with one bedroom, attached bathroom and internal garage.
Ruwanthi had started planting various fruits and vegetables in the kitchen garden new the garage and we were losing produce on a regular basis to various raiders during the day and night which included a wide variety of birds, monkeys and wild boar.
The onsite caretaker for the construction company had two dogs, a male and female called Kahlu and Donnie and we were regularly disturbed at night by the barking warning us of predators looking for a midnight snack or two.
Some of the construction workers alerted us that there were three puppies that had been dropped off at the top of our road which they had been feeding as they arrived and left for the evening.
We were to subsequently find out that dropping off unwanted dogs, especially females, was a regular event in Sri Lanka. It is particularly prevalent around the monthly Poya day and puppies are dropped near temples with the expectation that a worshipper would take on the problem.
Ruwanthi went with one of our workers to investigate and found that the male puppy had died and there were the remaining undernourished female puppies remaining. Despite not being a dog lover the natural instinct was to take the two orphans and provide some sustenance and shelter as you would with any animal in need.
We named them Clove and Cinnamon as they were dark with some flecks of white and brown on them. It was a steep learning curve for us both with lots of searching on the internet finding out what we needed to do.
We didn’t want the dogs inside the garage and their quarters was a box outside with a towel to provide the warmth that they would have gotten from their mother.
At the time Donie was due to have some puppies so we were going to have more animals on the premises than expected however we did think they would all be found new homes and Kahlu and Donie would move on to the next project with their owner.
Donies pups were born and the dog numbers were raised by three. We were feeding Clove and Cinnamon and Kahlu and Donie were mainly fed from our spare rice with their main meals being provided by the unwanted leftovers from the construction workers.
Clove and Cinnamon were very sweet and we unexpectedly had gotten quite attached very quickly. A few trips to the vet for advice and the relevant injections they started to grow and get stronger with their regular feeding of rice and curry several times a day.
Cinnamon was the more adventurous of the two and they both provided us with lots of entertainment watching them grow and develop.
One evening we didn’t have too much food available left over for Donie and her pups however they were fed by their owner. Perhaps there was little provided there as some of the workers had gone home for a few days.
In the middle of the night I was awoken by Ruwanthi shouting at the dogs as there was some racquet going on outside. It took us a minute or two to get the garage door open and find out what was going on in the pitch black of the night.
Ruwanthi had seen Donie with one of our puppies hanging from her mouth and she went searching outsides soon as able. Eventually, after what appeared to be an age she returned with the limp body of Cinnamon cradled in her arms. Within a few minutes Cinnamon stopped breathing and was gone.
An event like this never leaves you and I do think about our Cinnamon quite often and wonder what type of character she would have grown into. Early on Clove had attached herself to Ruwanthi and Cinnamon to me.
It was very traumatic for us to think what Cinnamon must have gone through and we were confused and bewildered in trying o work out why this had happened. We felt guilt and sorrow for what Cinnamon must have endured as a shocking end to her short life.
We went through the established emotions of grief and my anger towards Donie was difficult to abate.
We had really become attached to the dogs and were distraught by the events that had taken place.
We came to the conclusion that Donie had not had sufficient food to eat as she was providing for three suckling puppies and perhaps had seen Clove and Cinnamon as threats to her food source. Cinnamon, being adventurous may have been disturbed during the night by the new puppies and went to investigate and Donie decided to protect her pups.
We now changed our outlook to protect Clove until she had grown to a size where she would be able to defend herself. Our reticence to have a dog inside the garage abated and Cloves home was over into the Garage part of the building.
Prior to her moving inside we did not have to worry about midnight trips for the dogs to relieve herself or investigate any potential nocturnal predators at our vegetable garden.
Sleep depravation was now to follow with the garage door being raised and lowered regularly during the night. Clove took some time to work out that the garage was not her toilet and we were regularly met with presents for us to avoid in the morning.
It turns out that Clove was not going to be the last of the dogs that came to us at GlenMyu Estate, however that story will have to wait for another Blog post.
We now have Seven dogs. It has not been our maximum number as we have taken in a rehoused lots of puppies over the short time we have been at GlenMyu Estate.
At the time of writing another female puppy has just forced her way into the estate!
Pictures to follow.

In December 2022 we got a cow.
I didn’t want a cow however, my wife was determined to get a cow, so we have a cow!
If you know my wife, she normally gets her way.
We had several discussions over the last few years about a cow and I was adamant that we would not have a cow at GlenMyu Estate.
I had several concerns about taking on this responsibility. One of the main ones was the terrain which is quite steep in places. I was worried about a cow having a fall and breaking a leg. Also, I was concerned that we would start racking up vet bills if the cow fell ill. Many of our neighbours that have cows (mainly for milking) appear to have the government vet visiting them often.
The other main concern was that it was another level of responsibility that we would be committed to.
Cow manure is an important part of organic farming. It has high levels of minerals and nutrients which are one of the best natural fertilisers used in organic gardens. Using cow dung to nourish the soil eliminates the requirement for chemicals and pesticides.
By having a cow at Glenmyu Estate we also do not have to use fossil fuels to transport manures and compost to the property reducing our carbon footprint.
There are many articles providing information on the benefits of uing cow dung/manure in an organic garden or farming. Home Biogas outlines these benefits.
Science Direct provides a good history and data about cow manure.
At GlenMyu Estate we are happy for Malli just to provide us with manure. We just want her to lead a good, stress free and comfortable life. There is no need for Malli to go down the route to provide us with milk. We have plenty of neighbours that have cows where we can buy milk when we want to make ice cream or cheese. As Malli was premature she may not be able to produce milk successfully and we do not want to put her through that stress.
Initially we were really pleased with what Malli was grazing on. Having been confined to a small shed before arriving at GlenMyu Estate’s 5 acres, she was fed grains as there was no where to forage. It was like having a smorgasbord with the offerings at the land. She went from place to place sampling new tastes and didn’t stay in one place for too long.
I was pleased as she was eating some grass where I would normally have to strim with my brush-cutter to keep the growth at bay.
She also provided the manure that we were after for our organic garden so all was good.
Well, it was, until she decided that flowers were tasty. She managed to destroy quite a lot of the planting alongside the main lawn at the estate which had been painstakingly maintained by Ru and the gardeners.
Shouts of “Malli No!”became a new sound often heard in the garden.
In order to get Malli to concentrate on what we would like her to graze on (and protect our flowers) she is now tied in an area for a few hours a day. She does a good job there and is later released from her bondage to roan freely. There are still cries of “Malli No!”, however, they are getting less frequent.
We have come to the conclusion that losing some flowers is a compromise that is worth making.
Malli has only been with us a short time but already there are some events that are making us laugh.
We normally give the leftover or spoilt papaya to our chickens. Malli loves Papaya.
Our Walli Amma was taking some Papaya peelings to the chicken shed but met Malli on the way. It is quite a narrow pathway and therefore is single file only.
Malli wouldn’t let her pass until she had given her some of the Papaya peelings! After a while Walli Amma realised that the chickens would be without their snack if Malli had her way. She dropped some Papaya on the floor and managed to slide past Malli and make her way to deliver the remnants of the fruit to the chickens!
Ru was trying to take Malli around the pathway in below the house to graze on some of the foliage there.
As soon as she let go of her rope Malli went tearing off completing the circuit to where one of our staff was taking a Jackfruit off the tree.
Malli loves Jackfruit!
When Ru found her she was just standing by the Jackfruit Tree looking upwards. She wouldn’t move until she was given a chunk of the fruit!
The reaction from our guests so far has been great. They love the story and that she has been rescued from a dangerous situation.
Malli looks great in the environment and adds some additional life and colour to the Estate.
When guests have found out we have a cow they have immediately asked to see her and be “introduced”.
One of our guests had to say a last goodbye when they were leaving.
We have a great picture of one of our guests feeding Malli some Papaya. It was a special experience for both parties!
She is becoming quite a character
Malli has quickly become one of the family here at GlenMyu Estate.
I must admit that I have changed.
Malli is a real asset for the Estate and has become part of the experience for guests at the estate. My fears of Malli destroying large parts of our work and making lots of unwanted noise has not come to fruition. The main issues are whether we can keep “some” of our flowers and whether we can dodge the cowpats before they are picked up and added to the compost.
Unfortunately, during my brush-cutting, I have not seen one of Malli’s fresh offerings and been “splattered” which is not a pretty sight!
The main reasons why I didn’t want a cow have mainly disappeared.
Malli bounds around the property without fear or concern. I have been really surprised on how she manages to get up to steeper parts of the land when she forages.
She appears to have settled into the climate and environment quite quickly and despite being premature she shows no sign of needing a vet.
It also turns out that one of our staff has experience in looking after cows and he has taken on the main part of this responsibility that I was concerned about.
We are still in the early days of Malli being at GlenMyu Estate but most of my concerns have been lifted.
If you want a holiday with a difference in Sri Lanka, then maybe GlenMyu Estate is the experience for you. To find out more please visit our website or contact Ru on WhatsApp for direct booking rates.
Here is our thought for the day from GlenMyu Estate Hotel, Beragala, Haputale, Sri Lanka.
As I wander around the beautiful 5 acre Estate in the Sri Lankan Hill Country my mind wanders. It’s amazing what comes to mind when roaming around the land with 7 dogs in tow.
Surrounded by nature and a sea of green.
Birdsong providing the background music.
It’s easy to be inspired into thinking different thoughts whilst enjoying this little piece of paradise.
Often when walking around memories or ideas come into my mind.
I plan to regularly share my thoughts with you the reader.
However, I can’t promise to share them every day as some many not be inspiring or interesting.
Please accept them as they are.
I didn’t really want a cow.
My wife wanted a cow.
As usual, my wife gets her own way.
Now we have a cow!
Maali, the co, really adds to our beautiful landscape at GlenMyu Estate.
Here is a picture of her adding to the scenery and ambiance of the land.
She doesn’t just add to the ambience of the estate. Maali is an important addition to the aim to produce organic food. A cow produces cow dung and urine which is used towards our composting. It provides valuable additional goodness that helps the plants balanced homemade natural fertiliser.
It’s okay to be wrong.
I have read so many books and been in business training courses where they recommend you to set a goal. However it is okay to adjust that goal and reset it.
I guess that’s what happened when we got the cow.

On Sunday morning (18th September 2022) four abandoned puppies were left at the main gate at Glenmyu Estate.
Our existing pack of seven dogs alerted us to the new arrivals with excited barking and running up and down to the gate.
I was brush cutting at the time, keeping GlenMyu Estate neat and tidy in anticipation of new visitors to enjoy a stay in the hill country.
Eventually I cut the engine on my machine and investigated what the fuss was about.
I had a feeling, as this was a Sunday, that perhaps some puppies had been left on the road
Unfortunately since living in the Hill country since 2018 we have found that puppies are dropped off on a Sunday or a Poya (Full Moon) day. I can only surmise that people believe that sympathy and charity will be provided on a “religious” day.
I was a little taken aback when I discovered four abandoned puppies snuggled up together at our gate! There was only one action to take – call for back up from my wife!
I asked for my wife to come and see the new arrivals and decide what we should do. We are reluctant total on more dogs as we already have seven on the estate.
GlenMyu Estate has five acres for the dogs to roam so realistically we could cater for more.
However, there are several factors why we have decided that seven is a maximum that we should have.
One factor is cost. Feeding seven dogs is expensive and as food prices have risen substantially this is becoming more of an important factor. Dogs in Sri Lanka are mainly ‘rice hounds’ (unless they are a pedigree dog). Their diet is mainly rice with some protein (usually fish or chicken) and some finely chopped vegetables. The cost of rice has more than doubled in the last six months and we buy around 100 kg of rice a month.
Another factor is that dogs are social animals and they need attention. I find it challenging spending enough time with each dog individually during the day and adding more friendly faces would add to this difficulty.
The abandoned puppies were full of fleas, ticks and you could also see from their extended bellies that they had worms. The worms are typically passed through from the mothers milk and needed to be treated as they can be deadly in such small fragile beings.
Unfortunately we have been through this process on several occasions.
We have lost count of the number of dogs that we have taken in and rehoused since we have been in Beragala.
Ruwanthi cleaned up the puppies, removing ticks and then dusting them with tick and flea powder. The temporary visitors dropped off from the puppies in their numbers.
Some sustainence in form of rice mixed with chicken juice was gobbled up by the hungry four.
A cardboard box with some fabric to provide some warmth would be the puppies temporary home.
Regular meals are needed for puppies at this age so that they get a good healthy start in life.
Worm treatment was a priority so I made a trip to the pharmacy in Beragala to buy some liquid worm treatment for the puppies.
Ruwanthi administered the medicine that evening and we were presented with the results in the morning. Not a pretty sight and to clean however it was a very important task that had to be completed.
To support that good start in life we provide vitamin liquid to provide the puppies with the best chance of survival and to become strong enough to survive life in the tropics.
We will take the puppies to the vet to get them checked out and some advice on what we need to do going forward. There will be vaccinations for rabies, parvo and DHL to come when the puppies are old enough.
Parvo is a contagious virus which mainly affects dogs. It is spread from dog to dog, directly or indirectly through contact with their faces.
Vaccines can prevent infection and mortality can reach 91% in untreated cases.
DHL is active immunisation against a Canine Distemper virus. It is required for puppies beginning at 6-8 weeks old, boosted twice at 3 week intervals and then a year later.
I decided that I would record our journey with the 4 new puppies as it would be of interest to dog lovers around the world.
You can see my videos at the following links.
We use some of the surplus income we make at GlenMyu Estate to fund the costs of our wonderful street dogs that are resident at the Estate.
We also use funds to support abandoned puppies like these four paying for their food, medicine, vaccinations and vet bills.
We also have funded a spaying a neutering program locally helping those villagers who cannot afford the money to operate on their dogs to control the street dog population.

We get very excited when new life arrives at GlenMyu Estate.
Today (5th March 2022) our wonderful Mama Duck has done it again!
We have some new life arrivals at the Estate in the form of the cutest ducklings.
Our Black Muscovy Mama Duck is a proud mother looking after her new offspring.
Unfortunately one of our dogs went missing on the 21st February and we have been in mourning since. We have searched the Estate and further, driven for many kilometres and spread the word over the internet and by printing lost dog posters to try to find him.
We have not given up hope and have come to the conclusion that someone really wanted our beautiful dog and he is in a new caring home. Other outcomes we can’t bear thinking about.
The new life arriving today at the Estate has given us a bit of a lift.
Mama Duck was not very successful with her last batch as only one egg hatched.
We were really concerned that this solitary duck would be lonely not having siblings.
However, Mama duck looked after her until she was old enough to join the rest of the mature ducks and she has just fitted in very well and is part of the family.
As you can see there are more eggs to hatch. We will have to wait and see whether all ten eggs are successful.
One of the joys of being at GlenMyu Estate is to be closer to nature, switch off and enjoy the little things in life.
We really get a lot of satisfaction out of spending half an hour or so just watching our ducks go about their business.
They waddle from their duck house down to the stream for bathing and then forage around the grounds looking for something to eat. Even watching them have a snooze perched on one leg is just very soothing.
The new life that arrived today will give us more interesting things to watch and pass the time.
I often say that watching the ducks is a kind of therapy.
Please click on the following link for more information.
We had three sets of guests here today to witness the new life arrive at the Estate. Maybe you will also be able to experience this if Mama Duck times it with your visit.
It is a December morning with Christmas fast approaching.
About an hour ago I was woken up by the early morning light that washes over hills below our bedroom window which has a view towards the Southern coast of this Paradise Island.
My balcony sits below a glorious Sri Lankan Fig Tree which is bathed in a kaleidoscope of light.
Music is provided freely by the winged visitors that whistle, tweet and call to each other appearing to be saying “Good morning World!”.
My peaceful start is disturbed by three of my four legged friends that want to join the party.
Mans, and my best friends, are acknowledged by a gentle pat on their heads and then they settle at the balcony end to also enjoy the view.
Not many years ago I would be fighting my way through the throng of London’s Underground network targeting arriving in the office on time.
I would be wrapped up tightly to ward off the icy blasts of that the European Winter would throw at me.
Approaching the box that would be my coffin for the coming eight or so, hours I automatically pick up a generic coffee which is encased in a ,less than environmentally friendly, disposable cup and my blood pressure would eventually settle after being tormented on the start to a traumatic day.
My coffee today has been picked from the Estate, processed and roasted on a skillet over an open fire. Bean to cup has travelled about two hundred metres.

Cloves remind me of both Christmas and skiing in Europe.
Oranges peppered with cloves sunk in gallons of red wine and brandy on the stove creating an intoxicating beverage on a chilly December day just gives me a glowing warming comfortable feeling.
This perfect combination is something to look forward to as the temperatures dive towards the end of the year.
It’s not a drink for Sri Lanka, apart from maybe Nuwara-Eliya, as it just doesn’t get cold enough here to do justice to this delicious beverage.
Cloves are the flower buds of the clove tree which is a tropical evergreen tree known as Myrtaceae Syzygium aromatic.
The trees are native to the Moluccus Islands, or Spice Islands in Indonesia.
Cloves have a strong aroma and a hot, pungent taste. They are used to flavour many foods and in particular meat and bakery products. It is used in Europe to flavour Christmas foods such as …… hence my picture of Christmas when I smell the aroma of cloves.
Indonesia is still the worlds largest producer of cloves followed by Madagascar, Tanzania and Sri Lanka.
Early on during the build of the main house on GlenMyu Estate we were made aware that some of the construction workers were feeding some abandoned puppies near our gate entrance. Once of the three foundlings had already dies and there were two black waifs struggling to survive. My wife Ruwanthi went up to investigate and brought the starving creatures down to the garage.
My parents had always had dogs when I was growing up and Ruwanthi was the same however, we had not considered having any animals ourselves. We both had worked long hours in the UK and it would not have worked for us and we would not have been able to provide the care for the animals so the thought had not entered our minds.
The agricultural department supplied us with around thirty trees which we planted in an area where they would get sufficient shade for them to survive during the warmer months from mid June to mid September.
Our worker dug some rather large holes before planting however as the land is very rocky it was important to provide the trees with the ability to establish their roots without too many obstacles.
Once planted they looked a bit lost as they were so small however, as we have learnt over the last few years, they require sufficient space when they are established to thrive.
Early on I planted lots of coleus around the saplings which gave them a bit of shade when needed and a bit of colour in the developing orchard.
It has taken a lot of work initially watering, clearing around the trees and occasionally feeding with organic compost made on the estate. I patiently inspected them over the months hoping that they would change from waif like twigs into something that resembles a proper tree.
In the last few months however they really appear to have got going and hopefully it will not be too long until we are ready for our first harvest.
Our outlook on not having dogs soon changed as both Clove and her sister Cinnamon became embedded into our daily life.
After the initial continual feeding, trips to the vet, injections, skin treatments and so on they became lots of fun and something both Ruwanthi looked forward to waking up to.
Unfortunately Cinnamon did not survive, which broke our hearts, and we were left with Clove who became an important member of our family.
Clove is such a lovely dog, who is so friendly with everyone it is difficult for her not to melt your heart.
What are Cloves used for in Sri Lankan cooking?
We were lucky enough to have some established trees on the five acre Estate and we have continued to plant more trees and other plants as we have developed the land.
We have an organic garden which provides the staples to lots of the items we serve on our menu. We are also developing Plant Based, Vegetarian and Vegan Menus as an offering for guests who stay at the Estate.
There are three king size on suite bedrooms for guests which all have superb views of the hills below.
A natural spring fed swimming pool is available for the use for guests and is a great place to have a refreshing swim or just hang out listening to the nature that passes by.
Please visit our website https://resortglenmyu.com for further details or contact Ruwanthi by WhatsApp.
We hope that you come an enjoy our little part of paradise and watch it grow.
We love dogs, however, as GlenMyu Estate is home to seven dogs we do not permit guests to bring their pets.
We believe that the risk, however small., would be too much and both the guests and ourselves would not be able to enjoy your stay as we would be concerned about your pet and ours.

We didn’t plan to have ducks.
I thought that having chickens ay GlenMyu would be good to provide us with organic eggs. They would also provide a good home and life for the birds we were to rear.
We have friends back in the UK that have a henhouse in their smallholding. They get a steady stream of eggs throughout the year. My only objection was that I found the cockerel to be quite aggressive and scary. I wasn’t looking forward to dealing with this challenge on a daily basis whilst collecting the eggs.
Our friends also have turkeys from time to time. Then the scare factor doubles for me!
Ruwanthi did a bit of research as we were also trying to grow organic rice at the estate. She came across some articles about Japanese farmers using ducks to keep their paddy fields weed free. The ducks also provided good natural fertiliser for the rice while they were going about their work.
As one gets older birthdays are more of a challenge when it comes down to marking another year around the sun. The conundrum is exacerbated when you live remotely. This results in limited purchasing opportunities. And being tied to the property whilst the development of the building and land is in progress doesn’t help.
I was delighted in 2019 whilst driving down the hill from Haputale to Beragala that my pondering over a suitable present this year. It was solved when Ruwanthi asked my to stop the car.
After about 20 minutes Ruwanthi returned looking for my wallet to complete the purchase of four duckling. And a packet of duck feed to keep them going.
I was a little bemused as it was another commitment we were taking on without much planning.
We arrived back at GlenMyu and the dogs were ejected from their cage. This would become a residence for the ducks until we arranged a more suitable home for them. I really don’t know what the dogs thought of the situation!
The ducks lineage is just like the dogs on the estate being a bit of this and a bit of that. However, we did work out that we had a Muscovy due to her markings.
The Muscovy duck is now called Mama Kahlu as she has been prolific providing a stream of new ducklings. Once she decided to sit on her eggs there was no moving her. Our duck numbers grew and grew so quickly that I was concerned that we would be overrun by them at the property!
We have have learnt a lot over the eighteen months or so that we have had the ducks. We have lost a few; one flew away, two were meals for the mongoose. One duckling went missing mysteriously in the middle of the night. Two ducklings have drowned? ( I didn’t think that this was possible).
Ruwanthi has a great relationship with Mama duck. She follows Ru when clearing demanding the worms that are dug up. Muscovys are renowned for being quite friendly and acting like a pet.
At this current time (July 2021) we have Mama Duck and one of her offspring sitting on eggs. You can see from the videos below that Mama is quite comfortable in her endeavour being an old timer now. The younger duck is very protective and hisses as me as I get near.
Maybe my reservation about chickens and turkeys being scary will also be the case with some of the ducks we raise!
Ducks, ducks and more ducks and a birthday. Read More »
It’s been a really steep learning curve being new to raising ducks and only being 18 months in
A spur of the moment birthday present for my wife in late 2019 brought four ducklings to GlenMyu Estate.
We didn’t know at the time that you cannot work out the sex of the duckling until it grows a bit and therefore we were unsure what mix of a batch we had picked from the retailer.
We waited with anticipation and we thought that we were lucky as it turned out we had two males and two females. We thought we would have a stream of eggs coming from these pairs in the coming months.
Little did we realise that there is a rule of thumb ratio of one male to four or five female ducks however we were soon to find this out. From the markings we appeared to have two Muscovy Ducks and two ….well we don’t really know what they are!
The dominant Drake would bully the Muscovy Drake and it was pitiful to watch.
One day the Muscovy Drake decided enough was enough and flew away never to be seen again despite and extensive search by us and our team. We often think about what happened to him. Did he manage to survive or was he lunch for a mongoose or one of the other predators that may be hiding in the forests.
The remaining Muscovy female was a little bit lost for a few days however settled into life with her duck house mates.
The Muscovy female decided one day that she was going to sit on her eggs and our egg production was reduced however, we were intrigued to see what would happen
We are amazed by mother nature and how animals, without any training or knowledge, instinctively mate, deliver and care for their offspring.
We had witnessed this with our first dog, Clove, who had been on heat whilst we were in Colombo and we missed the boat on getting her spayed to avoid adding to the already large number of dogs in the community.
Clove was so young but delivered, cleaned and fed her seven puppies to our astonishment and admiration. We were disappointed that she decided after three or four weeks feeding them was too much of a bother and handed the responsibility over to us!
Mama Duck, as she is now known, also instinctively did what was required to see seven eggs through to the emergence of seven beautiful, cute, and hungry ducklings.
Mama Duck has turned out to be quite prolific and has delivered several batches of new life since.
We have one of her offspring who are now sitting on its own batch of eggs and we are awaiting to see if she are as successful as their mother is. Mama Duck is also sitting on eggs so we are expecting lots of new arrivals in late July or early August.
Both females are sitting on eggs in the security of the greenhouse and duck house. This is a first as Mama Duck usually sets up her next near our Temple Rock which is not secure from predators and we have had many nights of lost sleep concerned about her safety. We are sleeping better now knowing that they are better protected and can be locked in at night.
We joke that every morning we have to go on an egg hunt to find where the ducks have laid their eggs so we can collect them. They can lay their eggs in the most awkward of places and are really good at hiding them!
One of the other females is now laying and hiding her eggs in anticipation of sitting on them delivering more life to GlenMyu. She has tried a few spots before settling on one place.
Around six thirty this morning I decided I would go open an egg hunt and watch where she went after her morning dip in the stream.
I kept my distance and had an idea of roughly where she was sitting.
At around midday I had a look at the spot and eventually uncovered five eggs well hidden by leaves, grass and other flora. I took a short video showing what I found.
