A hike for everyone in Sri Lanka
The Pekoe Trail in Sri Lanka is a hike for everyone.
There are twenty-two stages in this three hundred kilometre trail.
Our guests at GlenMyu Estate have enjoyed hiking stages 12 and 13 of the Pekoe Trail. The stages meet in Haputale which is around twenty minutes drive from the estate.
We have also have some guests that have also hiked stage 14. They arranged to have their baggage taken by Tuk Tuk to their hotel in Ella.
Although the trail only opened in 2023, there are a growing number of travellers who have tackled some or all of the twenty two stages.Â
A local guide we met advised that the trail can be completed in sixteen days if you are able to trek two stages on some of the days.Â
The stages range from nine to twenty-one kilometres long and therefore it is achievable if you are fit enough.
The founder of the trail says that it is a hike for everyone.
Miguel Cunat, Pekoe Trail founder says that the trails are fairly easy, at low elevation.
It means that even novice hikers are able to try some of the stages.
There is information on the Pekoe Trail website about how hard the individual trails are along with distances and rises and falls in elevation.
You can read more about the Pekoe Trail on the BBC website’s article A ‘hike for everyone’: The 300km route shining a spotlight on Sri Lanka’s tea history.
