5 million Tourists in Sri Lanka
According to Travel Weekly “Sri Lanka hails ‘amazing comeback’ as it targets five million tourists by 2029”
In the article of the 8th November 2023 the chairman of the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau has laid out a five-year recovery plan. The destination aims to target five million tourists by 2029.
Prior to this the he country’s best-ever year in 2018, when 2.3 million travellers visited the island.Â
A new tagline.
Come now before it gets too busy(5 million tourists in Sri Lanka).
Much as we applaud the ambition to achieve 5 millions tourists in Sri Lanka by 2029 a lot needs to be done to facilitate these numbers.
We already see some stresses at the historic peak season between December and April.
This is the time of year where travellers want to escape from the cold Northern Hemisphere winter.
The most beautiful train journey in the world.
Although the train tickets are now available to be purchased online many of our guests have difficulty buying a ticket.
The journey from Kandy to Ella is around 6 hours, so you do need to book a seat. Unfortunately we have had guests that have arrived exhausted from their train journey as they were unable to secure a seat. This does not provide the best experience for them. Â It’s also not what they were expecting from their trip in paradise.Â
Some have been able to purchase train tickets at an exorbitant price from ticket agents who have scooped up batches of tickets when they have been released online.
More train tickets?, more trains? (with 5 million tourists in Sri Lanka).
If the tourist numbers in Sri Lanka are going to rise to 5 million by 2029 there will be a requirement for more tickets and more trains. Whether the train lines and schedule can deal with an additional capacity is something that we will no doubt find out in time.
We hope that a solution is found so that tourists can experience this beautiful journey.
So, come quickly!
You’ll come back for more’ - we agree.
We do support the tagline ‘You’ll come back for more’.
From our experience a majority of our guests plan to revisit Sri Lanka. They love their experience travelling around the island. The warmth of the welcome from local people is one of the major attractions. This is supported by so many things to see and do.
Sunbathe at the coast, safari, trek the new Pekoe Trail, see waterfalls, temples and ancient cities and just some of the things on Sri Lanka’s list.
Visiting at different times of the year opens up sides of the island that are avoided during the North West and South East Monsoons.
